"I suppose I failed."

Vayne once again found himself waking up in a room he doesn't recognize. His sighs as he slept woke him up, but the disappointment he felt kept him chained to the bed.

"Where… do I even go now? I have failed to reach the chalice I so dearly wanted to reach."

Although he expected to fail, he didn't really plan for it. Should… he just go home? Vale was for sure still taking the exam, so he should have ample time to— No.

He had no home.

The only one that was left there was a mother that did not really love her. Perhaps he should just work as a librarian? He should be able to stack books at an insane speed with his Blessing.

Why did he even try to challenge his father in the first place? For recognition? Validation? Where was he now?

His family was done with him, he should just forget about them as well and just live his life— No.

Vanessa crippled his legs as a newborn… that is something that shouldn't be forgiven.

But then what? What was he going to do? Valerion had

"This…" Vayne could really only just stare at the lump of flesh that was lying on the floor. His head, trembling uncontrollably; No— it wasn't only his head, his entire body was currently shivering in shock. He couldn't really clearly remember what happened, but with the visceral scream that was almost escaping from Mathilda's throat; some of the horrific images were returning to his mind. He pulled the knife away from Mattheus's hands— No, he pulled it so fast that he ripped off Mattheus's hands along with it. The next thing he remembers was stabbing him in the eye… before pulling it down straight to— !!! And as the memories very slowly returned to him, Vayne quickly ran towards the wall; the sound of him vomiting, echoing along with Mathilda's wail. "..." Vayne then stared at his vomit on the floor for a few seconds, before his eyebrows started to furrow; gritting his teeth as he felt a sense of infuriating rage very slowly gnarling through his b

Another day in the chapter of his life, another day of staring at a ceiling he doesn't recognize. No… this time it was different— he was no longer staring at the ceiling, but at the wooden floor that was sticking to his cheek. He was woken up by the feeling of being thrown over a couple of seconds ago; his Blessing, even activating as he was in the air. But he had just woken up; his mind, still completely stuck in a dream of what had transpired the last time he was awake. And what was he even going to do, fly? And so, Vayne just calmed his breaths down; deactivating his powers as he dropped straight to the floor. "..." "..." And he remained like this for a few minutes; his mind, replaying the feeling of him stabbing Mathilda's neck over and over again. Vayne thought he would at the very least lessen the feeling of guilt by the time he woke up, but no— it never truly disappears. The feeling was raw; he wasn't just remembering it— he w

  • Rising of the Running God   The Path of Negotiation

"Pft… sucker. Butcher of the 3rd Test my ass." Somewhere inside the corridors of the ship; the golden-haired, tan-skinned thief that bumped into Vayne was giggling to herself. She was walking through the wooden halls, almost as if showcasing her prize as she spun a pouch around her finger. And on her waist, was another pouch— not just one, but four more. The 4th Test was simple. The examinees were given a pouch with a coin in it; a coin that held the insignia of the Explorer Association. The ship was currently traveling to one of the islands that the association owned— and if an examinee didn't have two coins once they arrive, then they do not move on to the next test. And much like the last few tests, the rules were… almost non-existent. Negotiate, steal, kill. It didn't matter how you do it, the only thing that does matter is that you have two coins by the end of it all. The female thief was originally just going to get another coin and just hide

They targeted me 5 years ago. But I quickly noticed something was wrong with that Mattheus kid. I mean, how did you not? His smile was as creepy as a Gobbin." "I… haven't had the pleasure of meeting that many people." "...You some sort of loonie– Hnn! I… I told you to be gentle!" "I–I apologize, this… this is my first time doing it with another person, lady Nisha." "...Huh? Then you should have said something!" "..." Vayne could really only remove his hands from the thief's leg as she carefully pulled it away. The two weren't doing… something obscene as someone hearing them from the outside might have expected, no. Vayne was trying to wrap the thief's ankle; he sat on the floor while the thief was on the bed; he had always done it to himself when

  • Rising of the Running God   Teamwork

Vale Valerion. Nisha. The woman that could summon ice. An unusually tall and lanky long-haired man. A girl that looked even younger than Vayne. A bulky, muscular, bearded man. And finally, Vayne. Of more than the half a thousand examinees at the start of the Explorer Exam, only the 7 of them remained. And as he stared at the 6 other people standing on the deck, the only thought that was in Vayne's mind was how everything fleeted so fast. Granted, he was almost fainting and didn't really experience the in-betweens that much, but still— with their number, the next test should be the final one. "..." It wasn't only him that was looking around, practically all of them were checking and sizing up each other. Vayne had no idea what these 6 were fully capable of— but if his brother was to be used as a measurement, then they were strong. Even if you take off Vale's blessing, he was an Aura user that was capable of taking down

"So, how about it? Let's all work together to pass this test!" "...No." "...Sorry?" With a smile still plastered on his face, Vale's eyes started to blink as he slowly turned his head towards the voice that refused his very friendly offer. And there, he could see the woman that could summon ice already walking away— not even glancing or looking back at him. "W—" "Leave her. If she doesn't want to join us, then that's on her, kiddo." "...Kiddo?" This time, Vale's smile started to twitch as the youngest-looking examinee approached him; her long pink hair that was in a ponytail, bouncing along with her umbrella-like skirt. "The name's Mavey," the girl winked, batting her long eyelashes that almost covered her blue eyes, "Nice to meet you, Valerion's spawn." "...Nice to meet you too?" Vale could really only look at Mavey from head to toe, wondering how a small girl like her even managed to reach this far into the exam. "Hoho. Then let me

He seemed a little tense and curious, however, as he raised his shield and sword from time to time. "..." Nisha looked at him for a few moments more, before turning her focus back to the ice woman. Don Grecko and Mavey's voices echoed through the corners of the dungeon where their light could no longer reach. How did Vale know his name?-- is what Vayne thought for a second. But since he didn't really make an effort in hiding his name, the only thing he could really do was act as naturally as possible. And so, he subtly pulled his hood tighter and cleared his throat to make sure his brother wouldn't be able to recognize his voice."Yes," he then said in a deep and somewhat raspy voice. And as soon as his words crawled through his brother's ears, Vale could really only surmise that Vayne was probably already an old man."I… never thought it was a common name.""No," Vayne quickly said in haste; fortunately for him, the knowledge he garnered in reading all of those history books will finally be put to use,"It's a very common name in Ludia." Not really, but the pattern of their names was similar to his, "...Did you happen to know someone with the same name?""...Yes. He was the one I was speaking about earlier," the tone of Vale's voice started to weaken as he looked to the side,"A… anyway—M

SFW 33“What… befell upon all of you?”There was a sense of dread looming around the air; even without a tragedy happening, the interior of the dungeon they found themselves in was already dreary and ominous. But now, with all of them carrying a sense of hopelessness on their faces, Vayne was once again reminded of the true reality of the exam and what it means to be an Explorer.Throughout the days he and Nisha were exploring the island and hunting treasures, Vayne was having fun. How could he not, when just walking with both feet was a privilege to him?And now, seeing his brother lying unconscious on the ground and missing an arm. He… didn’t really know what to feel."We were being attacked when the ground opened up," Mavey, the girl that was even shorter than Vayne, was the one to answer his question,"It all just happened so fucking fast that none of us could react at all. Chapter 33: Now, We're Even

“We’ll… be okay.”--- Vayne no longer knew how many times he uttered these words. He kept repeating it over and over again hoping that it might be true but seeing as darkness was all he could see, there was no way to actually know. The only thing he knew was that a violent pour of vapor was escaping his mouth and nose right now; the cold, beyond chilling as he couldn’t even move a single finger in his body without exerting a great amount of effort. No— at the very least, his body found itself shivering and trying to fight off the cold as much as he could. But Nisha? Her body was completely frozen still and almost held no signs of life. If it wasn’t for the slight warmth that was escaping from her nose, then Vayne would have thought her dead already. He crawled near her and wrapped his arms around her waist and chest, completely hugging her back and even heavily breathing into her neck so he could try and provide her all the warmth he could give…. but it obviously was not enough. “..

Vayne could not help but close his eyes as his face was showered by… bits and pieces of the mechanism that was locking the chest Nisha found beneath the pool. He didn't seem to mind, however, as his eyes even widened as soon as Nisha's fingers lightly brushed across the chest. "O… open it." "I am, can you just have a little patience!?" Nisha raised her voice as she slightly pushed Vayne away. Her face, however, failed to hide her excitement which was even more pronounced than Vayne, "Things like this… should be treated with utmost care." And with those words, she very slowly opened the chest; both of their breaths, almost enough to blow the cover away. And with their eyes filled with nothing but excitement, the insides of the treasure chest almost blinded them as… …it

    ...Betrayed Again?

"No, I'm certain now… …this will work." The leaves that have been falling endlessly around Vayne started to slow down, along with everything else that Vayne could lay his eyes upon. It was always a spectacular sight to see everything around you just frozen— no matter how many times Vayne experiences the world like this, it was something he would always be amazed at. But for now, however, he had something to accomplish. And so, he took his eyes away from the frozen world and started running in it; each of his steps, causing the clouds of dust and dirt beneath his feet to float and flutter. He tightened the shield that was attached to his arm as he continued to move forward. And soon, the dried leaves and their shavings were no more as the soles of Vayne's shoe hit the surface of the water. It rippled, of course— but there aside from being incredibly unstable, the difference between the ground he once stood on and the water was becoming… non-existent.

"..." "..." The deafening silence of the forest was not something Vayne expected. He had always read that one would hear whispers everywhere and that it felt like someone was always watching your every move— but he always thought that they were just a way to express a certain emotion… …he didn't think that he would actually find himself looking over his shoulders every second that passed. And he swears he was seeing several pairs of eyes staring at him from between the cracks of the trees. It… was somewhat terrifying— the forest not permitting any light to enter its domain didn't help. And so, Vayne just decided to distract himself by looking at the uruc he killed. This could be considered only the 2nd life he willingly ended, and yet for some reason, he already felt numb to it. Even when he tries to remember Mathilda's eyes as she drew her last breath, Vayne… didn't feel anything. In the books, it is said that killing never truly gets easier.
