Simulation

The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead as Jaden took his first unsteady steps. His muscles, atrophied from months of inactivity, trembled with the effort. Dr. Emerson, the scientist who had welcomed him back, hovered nearby, ready to catch him if he fell.

"Easy does it," Dr. Emerson said, his voice a mix of encouragement and clinical detachment. "Your body needs time to readjust."

Jaden nodded, gritting his teeth as he forced his legs to cooperate. The physical therapy room was filled with equipment designed to help subjects regain their strength after long periods in simulation. To Jaden, it all looked like instruments of torture.

"How long until I'm back to normal?" he asked, lowering himself onto a nearby bench.

Dr. Emerson consulted his tablet. "Given your physical condition prior to the simulation and the data we've collected, I'd estimate two to three weeks of intensive therapy."
