Three years ago.
Over four hundred people were slaughtered in a small village.
The perpetrator? Reid Lichter-Seibert, the Knight of the Sword.

"Everyone, get the children away from here!"
Huh?
A young Lily rushed over to her mother who embraced Lily and her sister in her arms. Her father had left the house a few moments prior and had not been seen since.
"Lily, if they come into the house, protect your sister."
Tears were rolling down her mother's cheek as she pulled herself away from the two of them.
"I'm going to look for your dad."
Lily held her sister as tightly as she could, her sister was around two years younger than her. The three of them were all crying as her mother left the house.
"No! Mom!"
She didn't turn back.
Her mother had left so that Lily and her sister could have a better chance of surviving.
If nothing else, she would be getting in the way of Lily, if she fought.
"Lily... A-are we going to be okay...?"
"Yes, I'll protect you with everything I have."
Lily held the sword strapped to the side of her hip. The two of them curled up like a ball under a table in their house. They were both crying, with never-ending tears draining from their eyes.
"I-I'm scared... Lily."
Lily pushed her sister head against her chest.
"It b-be okay."
The two girls held onto each other as hard as they could.
Suddenly, half of their house exploded, going up in flames.
Her sister screamed.
Lily grabbed her sister by the arm and pulled her towards the back door. The flames were quickly spreading, like a bushfire, throughout their home. Burning the walls, furniture and everything in its way.
Eventually, they made it outside. They were met by a sight that would scar them for life. Hundreds of dead bodies were scattered across the village.
Lily drew her sword, preparing herself for the worst. Her sister pulled on her shirt, crying out for help.
All of a sudden, a figure appeared in front of them. A man wearing a long white coat, two swords hanging from his hips and bright red hair.
"Oh look, I missed some."
Lily raised her sword.
"Forceful Heart! FLAMING WIND!"
She screamed with all her heart.
A massive cloud of blue flames was launched towards Reid.
He drew a white sword, reflecting the entire cloud of flames straight back towards them.
The two girls were engulfed in a sea of fire. Lily tensed her body, the fire had little effect on her.
She looked towards her sister.
Suddenly, Lily's seemed as if she had just looked death in the eyes. Both her eyes looked almost completely traumatised. Her body shook violently.
"N-n-no..."
"Oops, I guess you're pretty strong. Can't say the same about your sister, though."
Lily became completely silent.
Reid slid his sword back into its sheath.
Momentarily, Reid could feel a sudden spike in magic around Lily, enough to make him shiver.
Her grip loosened, dropping her sword to the ground.
"Forceful Heart, Final Technique, Summer Wave of Forceful Flames."
That instant, the entire village was engulfed in fire.
Every house, every corpse, even the dirt was on fire. The entire area was lit up like a bonfire. Even Reid felt a slight amount of pain from the heat.
Slowly the fire died down from most of the ground. Houses and trees were still burning vividly, however.
"Impressive."
He walked closer to her and lifted her chin, revealing her cold, dark eyes. Tears flowed neverendingly from her eyes.
"Well, come back with me, I'm sure you'll make a fun sparring partner."
He grabbed her arm.
Without hesitation, she tugged her arm away from him.
"Are we going to have to do this the hard way...?"
This time, Reid scooped her up and slung her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
"Let me go."
"No can do."
"Let me go."
He ignored her.
"Please... I want to see my mother... let me go..."
Her voice became high pitched.
"Ugh... I have bad news fo-"
Suddenly Reid was forced to drop her. Another pair of arms caught her and gently placed her on the ground.
"I'm always late aren't I..." said a blonde-haired boy.
"W-wait... you're..." Reid's voice was shaking.
The two of them looked at each other.
"Hahaha... you're Fourier, aren't you! I was not expecting this but this is great, no, amazing!" Reid shouted in pure bliss.
Reid quickly drew both of his swords.
"I've been waiting for you! Fourier! Finally, someone who can challenge me!"
Lily looked up at the blonde-haired boy, his eyes seemed empty like didn't have anything to care for. He had a subtle look of sadness on his face.
"Angel Sword, Technique Development, Barrier!"
Reid's white sword he was holding glistened a bit before he was engulfed by a layer of red aura.
"Come at me, Fourier! Show me what you've got!"
Fourier slowly drew his sword. As his sword came out of the sheath, Reid's ears began ringing by the presence of the sword.
"Hahaha! This is it! This is what I'm here for!"
Reid got into position, holding the two swords in front of him. Fourier took a few steps, standing a little distance in front of Lily.
"Devil Sword, First Form, Bereshit!"
Reid thrust his black sword towards Fourier. It was easily parried by a single movement.
"I can see the thread of power! Just like the goddess said... Fourier! You better not die before I complete my sword forms!"
Reid stepped back and released another form.
"Devil Sword, Second Form, Shemot!"
It was again easily deflected by Fourier, hardly even moving his body.
"Devil Sword, Third Form, Vayikra!"
Reid attacked Fourier, again and again, with all of his attacks being deflected. Fourier's movements were incredibly clean, like a chess engine, playing the perfect move every time. He read each of Reid's movements and parried the attacks with minimal movements.
Reid's face was one of a child experiencing the happiest experience of his life, sweating from his brow, smiling happily. Fourier, on the other hand, was getting no joy from the fight, keeping a melancholic expression the entire time.
"Devil Sword, Ninth Form, Shemuel!"
Fourier was met by a constant barrage of attacks and swings which he blocked every single one, with no pressure. His feet were still planted in the ground, in their original position. He seemed to be able to read the movement of every single strike from Reid and adjust his sword, making contact with his blade at every point.
"Devil Sword, Tenth Form, Melakhim!"
During this attack, Reid's attack managed to contain a sense of heaviness. For the first time, Fourier was forced to take a step back in order to deflect the attack. Reid's forms were like a puzzle, with each piece falling perfectly after the other. Getting stronger after each form.
"Devil Sword, Eleventh Form, Divrei Hayamin."
Fourier had quickly adapted to his attacks. Again, he was able to parry Reid's forms with a minimal amount of movement. Wind swept across the scene from the force of the attacks. Flames of the buildings around them fluttered in all different directions.
Lily looked up at the blonde boy, being completely mesmerized by the talent and skill of the Knight. He was easily defending every single attack of the person who had just killed her entire village without even trying.
"Devil Sword, Thirteenth Form, Ester."
The entire time, Fourier had not used a single attack on Reid, only constantly defending all of his sword forms. It was like he was looking down on Reid.
In between forms, the two of them would trade sword clashes. Reid only seemed to use forms on his Devil Sword but he still swung the Angel Sword between forms. The two swords seemed to have wildly different applications.
"They really didn't exaggerate when they talked about you!"
Reid constantly barraged Fourier with attacks, only for all of them to be parried with little effort.
Finally, Fourier decided to speak.
"Why are you doing this."
Reid seemed to have been caught off-guard.
"What does this fighting mean to you," Fourier asked.
"Why am I doing this...? I guess you can ask the Goddess of Curses!" Reid laughed.
After a brief moment of silence.
"So are you making these decisions of your own accord?"
Reid seemed to be surprised by the question.
"Y-yes, I am."
"Are you sure... or are you just falling victim and being another chess piece on the Goddess' board."
Reid seemed to be losing his composure.
"Of course, these are my own decisions!"
He unleashed his next form.
"Devil Sword, Fourteenth Form, Iyov!"
He seemed to have been put off by the conversation, this time launching his attack with less enthusiasm.
Suddenly, Fourier swung his sword with more power, slamming Reid's blade to the ground.
"What is your purpose."
Reid looked at Fourier and saw eyes that were as dull as an old knife. They were cold and lifeless, like someone who had given up.
"Huh?"
"Tell, me, why are you here?" Fourier asked.
Reid laughed a little.
"I'm here to kill Lucia."
The fight had lasted no longer than ten minutes up to this point. "So you want to kill Lucia." "Precisely." "Well, I'm afraid I can't let you do that." * "Devil Sword, Fifteenth Form, Tehillim!" Reid's sword strikes were becoming exponentially more powerful. The strike was push Fourier off of where he was standing. Fourier's cape fluttered from the wind of the blow. "Hey now, if you don't start trying soon, you may just die." Reid swung his sword around in front of him a few times. Neither of them had been injured, the two of them had little patches of dirt and smoke on their clothing, but no injuries on their bodies. "Devil Sword, Sixteenth Form, Mishlei!" Reid forced his sword down towards Fourier's neck. The power of the attack had nearly doubled from the last one. Fourier positioned his sword perpendicular to Reid's and held his hand of the blade. The two swords clashed with each other and sent a gust of wind shooting off in every direction. Fourier was struggling a littl
I was awoken the next morning by the sounds of boisterous clambering outside. The mentor was standing outside waiting for us. Everyone quickly got changed and made their way out of their rooms. I was sharing a room with the other two boys and we quickly got out. A little while later, the girls also came out and joined us. I couldn't help but notice the other boys kept glancing awkwardly at the girls. "Alright everyone, one of the Royal Guards has kindly decided to help us, all of you better show them respect and I will warn you, the training is likely going to be very intense." The mentor announced. In the distance, a person wearing a green chequered duster coat with an oversized scythe rode towards us on a horse. "Hello everyone!" He was a very flamboyant person. Everything from his appearance to his manner of speech just screamed exuberant. "Hi." There was a light grunt between us, none of us were really at his energy level. The mentor walked over and began speaking to him.
Muichiro stayed the night with us after the training session. In the morning, a horse carriage was waiting for us at the front of the farmhouse. I wonder why Lily wanted me to come along? It was pretty convenient though, I needed to go to the capital and find Lucia anyways. Muichiro, Lily and I gathered at the front of the farmhouse. "Stay safe, Lily!" "I'll miss you, Miti." "I'll miss you too." "Come back soon." There was no saying how long the three of us were going to stay in the capital. After saying our goodbyes to the people I've been staying with for the past few days, we got into the carriage and began heading towards the capital. It was nearly identical to the carriage from before. The subtle farm animal smell was enough to make sure I wasn't too comfortable. With a few bumps and shakes, the carriage moved towards the capital at a steady speed. "Lily." "Yes?" She looked straight into my eyes. "So, I was wondering why you wanted me to come with you." Muichiro was
It was around 5:45 am. I was awoken by the blaring sound of my alarm. Just a little longer. I reach across my bed, feeling all around the bedside table, covering my hand with dust and other residues on it. Eventually, my hand reaches the phone, vibrating erratically and I tap my finger all over, eventually hitting the snooze button. The phone alarm begins blaring again. Really, already? This time I grab my phone and open it, flooding my eyes with a wave of burning light. 6:00 am. I drag myself out of bed and walk over to the clothes that I had pulled out the night before. It had almost been a month since I last wore my long comforting soccer socks. I put on my clothes, strapping the shin guards to my shins. Fourth year's the charm... I felt an immense feeling of despair as soon as I remember what had happened the prior year. I slowly began feeling literally sick, I felt like throwing up and my stomach tensed so hard I thought that there might've been a bird flying around ins
We continued on our way towards the capital. Lily was bandaging up Muichiro's eye. "I can't believe I let a mere bandit beat me up like this, I'm meant to be a Royal Guard!" "Don't worry about it too much, without you, we'd probably all be goners." I tried to lighten the situation. The carriage stumbled on, slowly taking us to our destination. After finishing up with first aid on Muichiro, Lily came back over and sat next to me. "Are you okay?" She asked. "Yeah, I'm mostly fine." I didn't really sustain any injuries aside from the soreness from my sword. The blowdarts stung when they hit me but after removing them, it wasn't too bad. "That's a relief." She flashed me a subtle smile. The carriage was silent for a little while. "Thank you for protecting me before." "Don't worry about it." Still, I was too weak. I was supposed to protect this princess and yet I was barely able to defeat two bandits. Even Muichiro was fighting seven on his own. Suddenly, Lily crawled closer t
"What are you doing here?" I felt as if my body was being crushed, I could hardly breathe from the immense pressure emanating from Fourier. I had never met him until now. Wait. Have I met him before? Why does something seem so familiar? "Answer my question." "U-um... I have some business with Princess Lucia." "What type of business exactly." He slowly began pulling his sword out from its sheath. Crap, what was I meant to say? I guess I'll just tell him the truth. "U-um, it's a long story, but I have to protect Princess Lucia for various reasons." "If you want to become a Royal Guard, sneaking into the castle is not the way to do it." "Well, it's not exactly that..." "Please leave, before I make you." Find the princess. Ah, my relentless headache just won't end. Find the princess. I've gone this far, screw it. I drew my sword. Suddenly, Fourier's facial expression completely changed. He seemed shocked for some reason. "Rin?" He muttered. "Huh? Who's Rin?" He just l
I put my sword back into its sheath and ran towards the throne. My arm was incredibly sore, every small movement caused a sting of pain. What was I supposed to do now...? I stopped around five metres from the throne, the princess was cowering behind the big golden chair. The king had an extremely surprised demeanour, yet neither of them said anything. I bowed my head. It was enough to inform them of the fact that I wasn't going to kill them right then and there. "Who are you?" The king asked. Suddenly, Kozue burst into the throne room. "Get away from the king!" Kozue screamed. He raised his sledgehammer. Air circulated around it like an aura. I could feel the pressure building up at the end of the hammer. "Royal Arts, Monocrete Assault, Air Type!" A powerful shockwave of air was shot towards me as he swung it. Crap. I tried to cover my face with my sword and block the attack as best I could. The attack still forced me to crash into the wall. Debris rained down from the cr
It was almost dusk. Everyone was still happily playing around on the field. It wasn't long after before a caretaker called everyone in for dinner. Everyone made there way inside, following each other. "Aren't you coming in too?" The female caretaker asked me. "Um..." "Don't worry, we have enough for everyone." "I guess I'll come in then." I was sure that Lucia wasn't going to be too happy about me hanging around her. But I just couldn't leave her alone, especially with no one else to watch over her. I walked over to the entrance of the farmhouse. It was uncomfortable small, for the amount of people, but it was obvious that it had gone through several renovations. All the children were sat down around several large dinner tables. The caretaker laid out many plates of food, on a connection point between the kitchen and the dining area. All the children lined up and waited for their turn to get their meal. I stood at the back of the line, letting all the children in front of me,
