Other than his uncle, Gary was the only person Julian trusted. Although his uncle had told him not tell anyone about the treasure, he did not hesitate to tell Gary about it that evening.
“So, are you’re going to look for it,” Gary asked. They were seated in the entertainment room watching a sci-fi movie they’d seen before.
Julian laughed. “Are you mad? Of course not. That’s ridiculous. I’m going to find a job and work as hard as possible so I can get my own place. I don’t have time to go digging around the city in the hopes of finding some ancient treasure. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?”
“You admitted that you’ve always found your family mysterious,” Gary said. “Maybe there’s no treasure but there has to be a reason why those spots were marked. What if they mean something to the family? What if this holds some of the answers you have sought your whole life? You said your parents’ bodies were never found. What if this has something to say about that?”
Julian sighed. “I think you’re taking this a little too serious. I was hoping you’d see how crazy that Mason is but you’re now on his side. If there’s really something good, why didn’t he go for it?”
“I don’t know. Maybe that was meant for you.”
Julian grabbed a can of coke and drank everything in it. When he was done, he put it back on the table. “I don’t believe you actually think this is worth trying.”
“I’ll help you look for it. Besides, what’s the harm in trying? We have a lot of free time now and we need to do something other than watch movies, party and play games. Let’s take it as an adventure. First, we need to find out where those spots are currently located, then figure out how to dig there without being noticed. I don’t think it will be easy but we have to do it. It’s better to know what’s going on. If you don’t do it, you’ll always wonder what you could have found if you did. I say we do it.”
Gary turned off the television and Julian spread the map on the table. The two boys started studying the map. Thirty minutes later, they left the house and started driving around the city in Gary’s car, with a notebook and pen. They followed the map and were able to discover where all the spots were. At first, it was hard but as they began to understand the map, it become easier to find the spots.
During the next few days, they dug through the spots of the map that were outside the city, in less urban locations. Most of them were in farms and bare land so it was easy. By the end of the first week, they had remained with five locations to check. Julian wanted to give up but Gary convinced him to continue the search. He was optimistic, and was enjoying the adventure.
“So, let’s see.” Gary said one morning. They were in his room making plans for the day. “We are remaining with five places to go to. The cemetery, the Northern giant’s soccer field, the plaza, the middle of Oakfield road and by the side of Willow Street. Wow.”
“How the hell are we supposed to dig in the middle of the plaza?” Julian asked.
“I have no idea,” his friend said. “Let’s just hope that whatever we are looking for isn’t there.”
“But that’s not even the worst place. We can sneak in somehow or convince the guard to do it but what about the road. How do you start digging the middle of the road? I say we give up on this thing. I don’t think there’s anything to find. Maybe someone already found it. For instance, if it was in the plaza, someone would have found it when they were digging the foundation.”
“So we can rule it out. The plaza and the road will be the last places we check, if we have to. Let’s start with the cemetery, and then we’ll do the side of Willow road. Those places are technically not owned by anyone so it will be easy.”
“There’s a guard at the cemetery.”
“You mean that old drunk Ronnie. We’ll just buy him some booze and he’ll be knocked within minutes.”
“Sounds like you’ve done that before.”
“I have.”
“Do I even want to know?”
“Let’s focus on the issue at hand for now. We will go to the cemetery tonight.”
The boys continued to make their plans. Thirty minutes later, they left the room and went to have breakfast. Kierra was extra nice to them. Julian had noticed that Kierra was very nice to him when Gary was around but when he was away, she treated him like dirt. Julian had not voiced it to Gary. He preferred to just ignore her. The woman had a crush on Gary who never seemed to notice her. Gary was in love with his long distance girlfriend whose parents had moved to another state, taking her with them.
Gary and Julian made their way slowly between the rows of tombstones, while studying the coordinates on the map.
“This place gives me the creeps,” Julian complained, clutching his flashlight tight.
“Don’t be a baby,” his friend said. “We are almost there. I wonder where Ronnie is.”
“We should have looked for him first. Don’t want that guy knowing that there’s a treasure in town. He’ll tell the whole world.”
“I think it’s over there,” Gary pointed ahead with his flashlight. Julian flashed at the map and saw the spot.
“Let’s check it out.”
Because the map wasn’t very specific, they had to dig through a fairly large area to find the spot. Thankfully, there were no graves on that part of the cemetery. They put their flashlights on the ground and started digging. A minute later, they heard someone yelling.
“What are you doing there?”
Julian looked up to see a shadow running towards them, a torch in hand. He and Gary grabbed their shovels and started running in the opposite direction.
“Why can’t we try to talk to him?” Julian asked.
“That run is probably making him sober,” Gary said. “I’m not going to jail. We shall return another time.”
The boys managed to get out of the cemetery without being caught. They took their tools back to the car. They sat in it for a long time in silence, each lost in thought. Julian was thinking it was time for them to give up and do something more productive with their time.
“Let’s go to Willow Street,” Gary suggested.
Julian didn’t feel like arguing. “Okay.”
Gary started the car. Five minutes later, they were at the location. They studied the map carefully before zeroing on a location. After deciding on where to dig, they went and parked the car in another street before returning to did.
Gary stood to watch the road as Julian got to work. He kept digging haphazardly for a while, his heart thumping fast. He was about to give up when he felt something. Julian dug again, softly this time. He felt the shovel hit a metal. His heart nearly stopped.
“I think I found something,” he said.
Gary was by his side within seconds. He grabbed the shovel from Julian and dug around the metallic box. When it was clear enough, Julian pulled it out. Gary continued to dig but it seemed there was nothing else. He proceeded to put cover up the hole he had dug until the area was levelled.
“Let’s go before someone finds us here,” Gary said.
Julian nodded and they started walking away with their tools. When they were safe in the car, Gary started driving.
“We’ll open it from home,” Julian said. The metal felt quite light so he was sure it wasn’t full of gold coins. It was disappointing so he wasn’t expecting much from the box. Unless it contained a clue to where the real treasure was.
His heart was beating fast, as he wondered what his ancestors had left him.
The whole street was silent. Stars shone above as the car pulled into Gary’s driveway. As Julian got out of the car, he hoped that Gary’s parents were not awake. Unfortunately for them, Mr. Dyer was back and he was standing at the landing when they got in and switched on the lights.“Where have you been?” he asked, looking at his son.“We had gone to see Danny,” Gary said. “We played a few games and didn’t realise how late it was getting. Sorry dad.”“Don’t do this again,” the man said, his gaze lingering on Julian as if he was blaming him for leading his son astray. Julian felt the man was right. It was his fault, after all. They claimed the stairs and Gary turned off the lights at the landing before they went to his room. Closing the door behind him, Julian went and placed the box on the table.“What do you think is in there?” Julian asked, fearing to open the rusty box.“I have no idea,” Gary said, sitting on his bed. He removed his jacket and placed it on the bed. “We’ll never kno
The sun was shining bright on that day. It’s a good day to die, Julian thought as he entered the forest. The air was thick as he started hiking up the hill. His heart was thumping so hard that he could hear it. The trees towered above him, and he could hear the gentle sway of the leaves, bringing a calming feeling to his heart. His mind was raging with all kinds of thoughts.A few minutes after hurrying up, his breathing had grown laboured and his legs heavy. His legs felt like lead and he was so tired that it was affecting his vision. Because of that, he nearly stumbled over rocks and tree roots on the path. At that point, he felt like he was dragging himself up the trail, his feet barely lifting off the ground. Desire everything, he continued. After what seemed like hours, he reached the top and immediately collapsed on the ground. He lay on his back under a shady tree and stared at the bright blue sky. The world was so beautiful and he found himself wondering if ending his life was
The shed was a small single structure in the backyard of the house. It was made of wood and had a single door. The exterior wall was painted grey and the inside was a lighter shade of grey. The shed had a shelf on the eastern wall where several equipment were kept. Julian noted that his uncle had nearly cleared it out and it was cramped as before. All that was left were a number of useless equipment that were either too old or broken. Julian saw that some of the wooden planks that made up the floor had been removed and a hole dug inside. He knelt down and looked down to see an old wooden box that had been emptied of its contents. As he was looking though the dusty shed, he spotted something, a hole in the wall. It was very small and he had never noticed it before. Reaching in, he touched it and tried to widen it. Suddenly, the paint near it gave way and Julian saw a crevice inside the wall. He had always noticed a bit of mystery in the family but all the things he was discovering we
Julian opened more pages of the book but couldn’t see anything. All the pages were blank. He sighed and closed the book.“Useless book,” he said.“Sorry man,” Gary said. “I thought you’d find something useful in there.”Julian wanted to throw the book out of the window but he remembered everything that had happened to him. Maybe the book would come in handy at some point. When they reached Gary’s house, Julian wanted to be alone. He went to his room and threw the book on the table. The book fell open when it landed on the table top. Julian was about to turn away when he saw words on the open page. He did another take to make sure he was seeing right. He could swear that the page had been blank before but he chose not to dwell on that.He picked up the book and saw an address written on it. He opened other pages to see if there was something on them but found nothing. Julian grabbed a piece of paper and copied the address hoping it wouldn’t disappear. He opened the drawer and saw a few
“The Ford family is one of the most powerful families in the world,” Mason said as Julian watched him sceptically. “We have many secrets that are not known to most of the world. Many centuries ago, one of our ancestors discovered several magical artefacts in a cave he had just bought. Sir William Ford had just moved to America when he used all his money to buy the cave. He had it inspected by several cavers who gave him everything they had discovered. William was a historian so we spent a lot of time studying the artefacts trying to figure out what they were and what they could do. Eventually, he found out that they were magical and talked to a few experts in the field. He realised that he could do a lot of things with them so he manipulated several situations in his favour and soon became one of the richest men in the city. For centuries, the family continued to prosper while many wondered how they were able to make so much money. At some point, the Ford women were accused of witch
Several hours later, Julian walked out of the mansion. It had taken a while but he had finally come to terms with his situation. As he headed to the car, he felt like he was walking on air. He couldn’t believe that he had a million dollars within his reach and he could do whatever he wanted with it. Julian wanted to do a happy dance and celebrate but he couldn’t do it among his parent’s employees. When he was dropped at Gary’s house, he walked into the house happily, feeling like screaming on top of his lungs. When he entered the living room, he was saddened to see only the maid who disliked him.She groaned. “You’re back again. When will we ever get rid of you?”“Why do you despise me so much? I have never done anything bad to you.”“You’re a waste of space, and you’re not worth cleaning up after. I hate that I have to work for a broke nobody like you. Save us the trouble and leave.”“I don’t need to stay here anymore,” Julian said.“How great!” she said.“Where is Gary?” he asked.
Chapter 13Julian turned and saw Kyle Washington walking in to the shop with a two tall blonde women, each at either side of him. He smirked as he walked towards Julian with the women. The sales assistant quickly went to them, completely ignoring Julian who had got there first.“Good morning, Mr. Washington. Welcome to the store. I’m Amy and will be helping you with whatever you need.”Kyle ignored her like the bastard he was. He was focused on Julian.“Katy, this is the loser I told you about. Julian Ford. The one who broke his leg to get the scholarship and accused us of doing it. Very pathetic, isn’t he?”“Yeah, sounds like a loser,” the taller girl said. “What are you doing here, loser? This is no place for your kind.”“I’m here to buy some shoes,” Julian said proudly. The three laughed out loud. “You didn’t tell me he was a comedian,” the shorter blond told Kyle, before standing on her toes to kiss him on the laps. Julian and the sales woman watched the exchange feeling disguste
“I’m so glad you got that scholarship because I don’t know what I’d have done without you around here,” Gary told Julian as they came out of the college library. It was their third day in the Fayetteville College and they had gone to borrow books needed for some of the courses they were taking. Julian led the way down a well-lit hallway, Gary following close. “I’m happy as well,” Julian said. Since Julian was now rich, he did not need any scholarship. But for the sake of hiding the amount of money he had, Mason had to create a scholarship that only sponsored three students in the college. Had Julian not joined as a scholarship kid, it would raise eyebrows since everyone knew how poor he was. The college was the most prestigious in the country, and the best in the city. “This place is great.”At the end of the hallway, the branched into another that led them out of the building. They had walked a few metres when they spotted Kyle, Logan and Jake coming up the pavement. Julian consid
