The rest of the night went by without incident, so the group set out early in the morning.
"We'll forget about heading to the base today, we need to spend the day finding food." Andrew suddenly said."Why?" Dina asked and Andrew pointed at Philip."His speed is our biggest advantage right now, and we need him to be at peak strength if we want to maintain that advantage. To do that, we need to get him food." Philip's eyes widened when he heard this."You're holding yourself aren't you? You probably expended a lot of energy fighting the infected from last night, and I doubt those canned meals were enough to sate you. Am I wrong?" Andrew said and Philip pursed his lips.Andrew was spot on. Right now, he was actually super hungry and the canned food he'd eaten the night before was barely enough to keep him on his feet."Yeah, you're right." Philip conceded and Andrew nodded. He gestured them over to a car and dug out a mp from his backpack before laying it out."The closest mall is about three miles from here. If we keep moving at our current pace then we should get there in an hour and a half or so." He said while pointing at a large square away from where they were."Hm. A mall would undoubtedly be filled with people though, a lot of which were probably turned into infected." Philip pointed out and Andrew shrugged."We'll run out of food eventually. Might as well do it now while we're still strong. Besides, we have you." Philip gave a smile when he heard this."Weren't you trying to kill me just yesterday? Why do you trust me all of a sudden?" Andrew looked at him strangely."Saying I trust you is quite generous. It's more like I'm using you as much as I can before you either betray us or lose control and try to kill us." He said it without any hesitation which led Philip to believe that he wasn't joking.Still, he didn't get mad. In a way, he was using them as well, both to get to the camp and also their knowledge."Well, lead the way." Philip shrugged and they began walking once more.***"How is it?" Some distance away from a large shopping mall, Andrew, Dina, and Philip could be seen hiding behind a car."I don't hear anything near the entrance, but there's some activity inside the mall. I'll have to get closer if I want to pinpoint their position." Philip said."It shouldn't be difficult for me to lead us away from the infected though." Andrew nodded when he heard this."Okay, let's go." They all got away from the car and bolted towards the entrance. While Philip said the coast was clear, who knew how long it would stay that way? So they took no chances. When they reached the entrance, Philip who had gotten there first ushered the siblings in before closing the door. The instant he did, he held the two of them and dragged them to a corner hidden by a cardboard sign of a large cell phone. The siblings were smart enough to know that he did that because something was coming.Philip moved and peaked over the corner. An infected that looked like its limbs had become stretched exaggeratedly with sharp claws crawled along a side wall, fluids dripping from its mouth.Philip watched it until it went around the corner, and even then, he still didn't move. Only when he went out of earshot did he look at the siblings and nod. They all stood up and walked briskly with Philip in the lead this time.He listened for any sounds as they quickly found a map of the mall. Dina brought out a pen and a small notebook from her bag and began sketching the map.Not even ten seconds later, Philip heard something moving towards them.He bent down and picked a rock before throwing it across to another part of the mall. A moment later, a growl was heard followed by the skittering of feet.Andrew was impressed by Philip's quick thinking. He had no idea that Philip was actually thinking at inhuman speeds allowing him to form proper plans on the spot.Soon, Dina finished copying the map and she held it out to them and tapped a spot that said Food Court. The two nodded and Philip took point again as they started heading towards the food court. It was on the second level, so they'd have to be extra careful.Philip moved and sometimes paused to listen and he checked to see if a monster was coming near them. When he was satisfied it wasn't, he kept moving.Soon, they arrived at the not working escalator that led to the next floor. Then, Philip's eyes widened as he suddenly pushed the two of them down and dragged them under the escalator. Not even a second later, the long limber infected suddenly jumped down from the upper level where they were. It looked around, its mouth foaming like it had rabies.Philip resisted the urge to gulp as he waited for it to leave. Soon, it seemed to get bored and decided to go somewhere else. When it was out of earshot, he sighed. That had been far too close. He looked at the siblings and was surprised by how calm Dina was before gesturing to them that the coast was clear. They came out from behind the escalator and quickly climbed it to the second floor. They squatted and checked the map again before confirming where they needed to go.As they moved, Philip suddenly spotted a shop that seemed to be selling all sorts of sharp things, from knives to swords, machetes, daggers, and so on.His heart leapt. He'd been after an actual weapon after his baseball bat broke. Even more so when he had to use his fists to kill the giant. He debated telling the siblings but was scared that they would object. However, he was surprised when Andrew tapped him and actually gestured for them to go in.He smiled and they quickly entered the shop. The place was a mess with all sorts of blades on the ground. Though they were clearly well made as they had no rust and we're just dust covered.Philip glanced around and his eyes instantly landed on a sheathed katana that was still being hung on the wall. He went and picked it off before carefully sliding it out of its sheath. The first thing he saw was his reflection against the well polished blade and felt a little excited. He'd never even wielded a sword before, but felt that him and the blade would get along just fine.He hung it on his waist and looked at the two and saw Andrew giving Dina a sheathed dagger and there was a machete hung on his waist.Philip went up to them and confirmed that they were done before they all left the shop feeling a little satisfied.Soon, they saw a bunch of tables and a counter with food options. They had arrived at the court. The food court was very much scattered. Chairs were broken, tables overturned, and an unsettling amount of dried blood. The group quickly went over and got to the counter.Andrew told Philip and Dina to stay before jumping over the counter and moving out of sight into the kitchen, towards the Fridge Philip assumed. He and Dina ducked and waited. It was at this time Philip finally got a good look at the mostly silent girl. She was very good looking. She had a slight tan, constantly running from monsters in the sun did that to you. She had large green eyes and long blonde hair, like her brother, though his was obviously short. Her body was also proportioned very nicely. Philip judged that if she was a teacher as she said then she was probably very popular among the male students. It was then that she turned to look at him and they both stared at each other. Philip caught the same look of wariness which Andrew usually looked at him with.He smiled at her and she looked away. Philip shook
“BELOW YOU!” Were the last words Andrew heard Phillip scream before he got stabbed through his chest. His eyes widened in shock as he saw the blood drip through Phillips's shirt. Quickly he retreated and continued to avoid their attacks but he knew Phillip was spent.*SHRIEK* Quickly, he was brought back to his senses by the scream of the spider-like infected that Phillip had tried to warn them about. He quickly reached for the machete that he had carried earlier and swung it into the neck of the grotesque-looking monster. The sound of metal hitting bone cut through the commotion that was going on all around them. Disgusting blood and liquids splashed all over him.But still, it wasn’t enough damage as the monster was still squirming and flailing its numerous hands everywhere. “Dina, stab it!” Andrew yelled.Dina hesitated for a moment but soon enough she brought out her dagger and with anxiety, stabbed the creature under its head, right through the jugular.More blood poured out an
Andrew and Dina carefully moved Phillip to a bench that was still intact in the hall of the mall. Dina went and came back with some water in a bowl from a nearby fountain and tore a piece of her flannel shirt to use as a rag.She carefully wiped the blood and fluids that he had racked up on his body after his bout with the infected. And for a split second, she caught herself looking closer at the features of Phillips's face. His facial structure was well-defined, his silver hair made him seem like a character out of a fantasy novel. Well, he had randomly appeared and saved her and her brother when they were in danger, sort of like a prince. Those feelings, however, were unwarranted considering the current situation. The world was falling apart, and they didn’t even know if they would survive till next week. This infatuation with Phillip had to be limited, for everybody’s good. When she had cleaned him up to a decent extent she tilted his head up and gave him some water before gently p
CHAPTER 11Where am I? That was the first thought Philip had when he woke up. From the bumping sensation he kept feeling, he knew that he was in some sort of vehicle. He also remembered some guy coming to ‘save’ them before he lost consciousness, so he was very concerned. However, he made no effort to open his eyes or stir. Because he could hear two people having a conversation next to him.“This guy seems pretty strong.” The first one said.“Even if he’s a special grade, it’s very impressive that he was able to hold down that many infected on his own.” He continued to say.“That’s right, and with the way he was looking, he barely had any energy left. Boss will be very happy with us when we get back.” The second said with a hint of excitement.Boss? Special grade? Philip saved these two thoughts in his mind and kept listening.“By the way, what do you think sir Kaiser is going to do about those two?” The first one asked and Philip restrained opening his eyes. They must be talking abou
Chapter 12A group of the SGO guys were laughing like maniacs, they had surrounded a bunch of people in ragged clothing, survivors, were screaming. As for why they were screaming, well, one of the SGO guys was using a knife to slowly carve off flesh from one of the survivors who was wailing like a pig about to be slaughtered. At that juncture, one of the survivors tried to run, however, an SGO suddenly stepped in front of him and held him by the neck. And before the poor guy could struggle, his neck was snapped.Andrew slowly retreated and took a deep, but silent breath to calm himself down. He couldn’t let his emotions get the best of him, especially now. With resolve in his eyes, he marched back to the camp.Philip took a moment to digest the information that was given to him. From what the guy said, there was a faction called the New World, and it was filled with people like him, called ‘Special Grade Infected’. Individuals who the G-virus and their genetic makeup managed to perfec
Phillip and the siblings ran for a few miles into the forest surrounding the city. Hopefully, they could lose the pursuing guards that way. They were running deeper into the forest now, but the footsteps coming after them just wouldn’t seem to stop.Dina was already getting tired, her breathing became more intense with every few steps they took. “These guys don’t seem like the type to forgive and forget.” Phillip said, trying to add some humor to the situation. But from the tired looks he got from Dina and Andrew, it did the opposite of its intended purpose.“Hey, can’t you just do what you did before? Like carry us and run really far?” Andrew asked him In between breaths.“Well, it’s not impossible. But the last time I did that I used about half my energy. I don’t think I’m good enough to travel that fast with people yet.” Phillip said while dodging a fallen tree.“If I was to do it again I would probably lose consciousness, and I don’t think it’s worth the risk. I might pass out an
Andrew and Dina had gotten a decent distance away from the confrontation between Phillip and the guards. All he could do was have faith that Phillip would get out of there unscathed. To that end, he put his focus on Dina.He sat her down and helped her rest her back on a fallen log nearby. He put his hand on her forehead and she was burning up. She had a fever. There was no worse time for something like this to happen. However, he couldn’t blame her. They weren’t getting enough sleep, rest or food. Always running and fighting. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. He went over to check the duffel bag that Phillip had taken from the camp when they were escaping. “Please let something be in here.” He muttered to himself as he rummaged through the bag.Eventually, he picked up a white bottle containing something he couldn’t properly see. Suddenly he saw a burst of fire come from where they left Phillip. He was startled but quickly looked back at the bottle.Th
Chapter 15Andrew looked at the two little boys with a dumbfounded look on his face. No wonder Philip said it was safe. Both boys seemed no older than ten and both were dark in complexion and looked a little thin. The moment Andrew and Philip came through the door, they huddled close together near Dina who laid on an old couch.“Hey you two, it’s me.” Philip smiled and held up his hands with a harmless smile causing the two boys to drop their guards slightly.“I- is this your friend sir?” The younger of the boys stuttered at it and Philip nodded.“That’s right. You don’t mind us staying, right?” Philip asked and Andrew looked at him through the corner of his eye.‘You ask that when we’ve already come in here?’ However, his thoughts were interrupted when a soft moan escaped Dina’s lips and she squirmed on the couch.Andrew immediately rushed to her side and touched her forehead before pulling his hand back quickly.“Geez, she’s burning up.” He said with worry.“We need something to coo
Xander was in a bind, the cabin they had struggled so much to get to was right in front of them but instead of relief, he felt tension. The people there numbered about ten or so, it wouldn’t be wise to confront them head-on.Furthermore, he did not want to approach them either. After what he had experienced with Mark and Adrian, he did not want to give anybody the benefit of the doubt. He could still remember the look on his face when he tried to choke the life out of him. He had gotten wiser in the last twenty-four hours believe it or not.He concluded that the best he could do was simply try to get enough cans of food before the others entered into the cabin. Funnily enough, they seemeddisagreeing. An older man with patches of grey hair seemed to be telling them not to forcefully enter, while a slightly younger man, probably middle-aged was raging for them to break the door down. This however was not a time for him to gawk and stare. It was a time for him to act! “Hailey, stay here
"Life can be annoying honestly," Andrew said as he looked through the window at the harsh downpour of the rain. When the group thought that they could move for a few more hours until sunset, it suddenly began to rain heavily. Enough to force them to seek shelter.Hence, they quickly found a gas station and decided to hunker down there. On the bright side though, there were some old comics they could use to entertain the kids. And a toilet, so they didn't have to ease themselves in the open as they had been doing since."With how hard the rain is falling, we might be leaving here by noon tomorrow. Just our luck." Andrew lamented. But who could blame him? They were trying so hard to cut their travel time and arrive at the settlement, and yet they just kept facing setback after setback."Fretting over it won't change anything. It's unfortunate but that's just how it is. The only thing we can do now is take it the best we can and keep moving." Philip said, however, Andrew raised a brow.W
“Do not even Think about stopping until I say so!” Andrew barked at the troops who were visibly tired while running laps.Their bodies seemed to ache and their chests heaved with each breath they took in. Andrew watched their progress with a whistle around his neck and arms folded across his chest.Ever since he became Captain, he had completely turned around the training regime of the force. They were now more effective and able to handle more difficult situations, thanks to Andrew’s guidance. He continued to watch over their progress when he heard the sound of a vehicle drive onto the training ground. He turned around and saw one of Greysons aides alight from the vehicle and walk up to him.“Captain Andrew, I have been instructed to take you to Mr Greyson immediately. He said there is something you must need to know.” She said.Andrew looked at the troops who were running behind him, of course they prayed internally that he would leave so that they could get a chance to rest after
In the blink of an eye Phillip was already at the front lines where the soldiers were assembling themselves and putting on their gear. They were spooked when he suddenly appeared out of seemingly thin air. “Who’s in command here?” Phillip asked the slightly frightened group in front of him.“Well based on what’s just happened wouldn’t that be you sir?” A voice said sarcastically from behind, generating a slight chuckle from all the members behind him.He was an average heighted man with well built muscles, a full face beard and ebony black skin and a shiny bald head to top it off.Phillip asked that question to know the hierarchy of the group and who’s responsible for what. “That’s very funny, however I don’t know if you are all aware but that alarm means there’s a swarm of infected rushing towards this base, correct?” He asked while turning his gaze to all of them who were staring at him.“Yes we know, we also know we don’t need one of those freaks to tell us how to do a job we’ve b
Phillip and Andrew leave the room in silence, walking side by side. They were still trying to comprehend what they had just heard.Even Phillip who was the first to be informed still had a hard time believing it. Turning people into infected for personal gains was something he never thought he would discover. However that was the reality, and all they could do was stop it from happening. “When do you want us to leave?” Andrew asked, bringing Phillip back to reality.“I was thinking tomorrow, any later than that and it would be unnecessary. We do not exactly have that much time to waste, especially considering we do not even know if the boy is still wandering the streets by himself.” Phillip responded.“What about Dina? Has she been informed about what is going on?” Andrew asked once again.Phillip shook his head, they had not mentioned anything to her yet as he did not see it as that important. But now that he thought about it, he would need her help since they were dealing with a chi
In the blink of an eye, a whole week had passed. The group was getting more and more accustomed to their new residence and life in the settlement. It was weird since they were so used to finding an infected at least once or twice in a day, so returning back to a somewhat normal life was a little foreign. However, they did still adapt to their new lifestyle quickly. So when they were confident, they all finally decided to look for something to do.Also, Frank hadn't stopped collecting blood from Philip, and according to the bags under his eyes and the excited expression he had on his face each time he invited Philip to his lab, Philip judged that his blood was indeed helping. He had tried to watch Frank work but gave up almost immediately as he failed to understand anything he was doing. On the other hand, Andrew and Dina had been socializing with the other survivors in the settlement. Most of them were pretty hospitable and had no problem in getting acquainted with the duo. There was
CHAPTER 30Phillip and his crew walked closely together as they passed through the makeshift wooden gates which led them into the settlement. They tried to observe as much as they could while passing through, especially exits should they need to escape from the place for any reason. The walls were made from timber and reinforced by rows of lamp posts, despite the fact that the infection spread less than two months ago the measures they had taken to protect themselves were very impressive. And unlike his earlier assumptions, the walls actually spanned about 3 kilometers across all four sides of the settlement. Every 50 meters or so there was a watch tower with people with guns at the top.Upon closer inspection, some parts of the walls were covered in graffiti. Names of departed, days In captivity and other random yet strange things were painted on the walls.“Follow me.” Alice said as she turned and passed through what was formerly a commercial district but had now become a makeshift
“The primaries aren’t looking too good Mr Greyson.” His secretary said after making his presentation on the projector in Greysons office. He was holding some documents and graphs from the last primaries that had just been held concerning his rerun election. He was pursuing a second term in office as the next round of elections was coming up.“Just what could the problem be Chris? I kept all the promises I made during my campaigns, so just why are the polls so negative.” Greyson said as he leaned back in his chair and put his palms on his face.Chris could only look at his boss with a bit of sympathy. Ever since the introduction of the G-Virus which still couldn’t be explained, his competitors had begun to take advantage of the situation. Making promises such as protecting those who voted for them from the virus.Although it was a deplorable tactic, it seemed to be working. Greysons main competitor, Judas Layton was the embodiment of power hungry. He had always been guilty of making f
Frank opened the door and at the entrance stood two guards with masks standing at attention. They both saluted when they saw Frankwho acknowledged them before returning to their natural positions.“This was please.” Frank said as he gestured in front of him and took charge. As they walked, Phillip couldn’t help but notice the other scientists that occupied the makeshift laboratory. The building seemed to be an old building which they had converted quite nicely into a suitable laboratory. There were at least a dozen people in there with their own secluded workspaces and tables set up with various gadgets and equipment.Lights flashed, equipment beeped and notes were taken as they studied the various tasks that were in front of them. He caught a glimpse of some fascinated faces when he was making his way past some of their desks. He could see their curiosity visible written across their faces as he walked by. ‘What a specimen!’ Some of their faces screamed as they walked further into th
