Chapter 16 : The Agreement

The siren sounded loud and the intensity of the beat was so fast that Spike was quite scared and panicking now. Just hearing the tone was as if something bad was happening right now.

With haste and rushed steps, he dashed towards the gate where he was before. That man was pounding on the gate hoping someone would get him out of this arena soon.

"Hey! Quickly get us out of here!”

“It's useless...” Vahn replied while still in his bad state.

“Everyone must be trying to save themselves right now. The heartless robot guards are no exception.”

Spike slammed into the metal gate that was protected by several layers of metal and iron. It was useless, his arm still wasn't strong enough to cut through it all right now. "I told you, it's useless. We can only wait here until everything is over…”

Giving up on the situation, Spike leaned against the gate hopeless for now.

His gaze was directed upwards, making him realize something.

“Wait, is it normal for no one to watch when a lower-ranked prisoner fights? I didn't see or hear a single prisoner while we were in this arena…”

"No, that's not usual" Vahn replied swiftly.

Despite being in a critical condition, he was unlikely to die right now. All of his artificial internal organs as well as the machinery allowed Vahn to still breathe and gain consciousness at this time.

“In fact, seeing lower-class prisoners fighting each other is entertainment in itself for them. Lower-class humans who have nothing to risk other than their lives fighting each other for survival is entertainment in itself for the prisoner,” Vahn explained further.

"If that's the case, does that mean that the uprising that's happening right now is very massive?"

Vahn stayed silent, he didn't answer anything. Spike felt that Vahn might have limits on the information he had, and Spike didn't expect Vahn to know all of his questions.

“Hunn’s victory was a mistake. And that affects the fate of this prison now. I'm sure The Chain is the cause of all this mess.”

Spike was clueless as to what Vahn was discussing. All he knows is that Hunn, the current leader of The Chain, has extraordinary and mysterious powers.

The two of them waited for the chaotic conditions out there with apparent calm in the arena. Spike had nearly fallen asleep from exhaustion in the too-quiet arena.

She saw Vahn there still conscious in an unstable state of mind. Several times the young man with half the body muttered and said incoherent words.

"Vahn, are you going to die soon?"

“I don't know, I'm also *beep not sure. Supposedly, I have the ability to regenerate inside my organs *beep. But I myself don't know how long it will take to make *beeps all of them recover. I've never fought like this before *beep”

Spike fell silent again. He wasn't comfortable being in such a lonely state.

“Hey... why didn't you kill me? You can rank up and get new skills if you kill me”

Spike drew closer to Vahn and said, “I don't need ranks, skills, magic, or anything else to get out of this place. When the time comes, I might just take out all the prisoners in this place together…”

Vahn laughed so hard it made him cough and some of his internal organs let out small sparks like fireworks.

“I don't know why you would think like that, but some of the prisoners in this place shouldn't return to the original world. Some of them deserve more to die and rot in this place.”

"Yes, I know. Wait... no, actually I don't care about any of them. I just want to get myself out of this place as soon as possible if it means letting go of my stance as a human."

Vahn was getting a bit confused by what Spike meant.

“I thought, that my mind was damaged here. But if you have such a goal, wouldn't you be able to achieve it faster if you rise to the top of the rankings?”

"Yeah, I think so too," Spike replied, he immediately stood up and tried to shake Vahn's hand.

“I have another reason not to kill you. I want you to be my ally now. We're going to start a new gang together!”

Vahn was even more confused than before right now.

“Why do you have such a decision? Why did you submit it so quickly? You don't even know who I am. I could have betrayed you later.”

“Vahn...before I was in this prison, I was someone who knew how good and bad humans were. And the moment I saw you, I could feel that you weren't one of the trash like them. Vahn, I trust you...”

With his current state, Vahn had no reason to reject Spike's advances right away.

Vahn shook Spike's hand, agreeing to join Spike's new alley.

“Am I the first ally in your created gang?” asked Vahn.

"Formally yes. But actually, I want to invite Silver to join my gang, it's just that I haven't had time to meet him. But one could say that you were my first ally…”

Vahn smiled in relief.

Like an ally and partner, the two of them sat side by side now.

"Tell me, Spike, what made you believe me?"

“When you came to me and we both looked at that arena, I was convinced that you were a complete madman. My guess was absolutely right. I really enjoyed our fight together. You fight with the skills and abilities that you have well. Even though my expectations were quite low for you when we fought just now.”

Vahn smiled back, he already suspected what Spike would be thinking earlier.

“You must have thought that I could fight with high-level techniques and agile movements, right? Sorry, I can only fight with sneaky moves and techniques.”

“That doesn't seem sneaky to me at all. If I had the same ability as you, I probably would have done the same as you."

Spike didn't expect that the fight he originally thought would end up being a life-and-death battle would end up being an ally this time.

“Maybe I'm too late to say this. But I'm so curious about what you did before you were in this place. Can you tell me what you did before you were in this prison?”

For a brief moment, Vahn's heart suddenly stopped beating. The system seems to have malfunctioned.

“I forgot how I was in the past. But I always get the same dream while I sleep. A dream that I'm sure came from me in the past…”
