Chapter 4: Charge It!

Evan glanced briefly at the display case and inquired of the saleswoman. Unfamiliar with luxury watches and preferring candor over pretense that might end in embarrassment, he asked outright.

Startled but maintaining professional composure, the saleswoman quickly pointed to a timepiece in the center of the display, its platinum gleam catching the light.

"The pièce de résistance here is the Richard Mille RM63-02 wristwatch."

"An automatic winding movement, mechanical by hand..."

"The strap is genuine crocodile leather..."

She fluently recited a long list of detailed specifications.

Regrettably for her, these were far from Evan's concerns.

He raised his hand to halt her spiel, his lips curling into a faint, dismissive smile. "I am only interested in the price."

The saleswoman swallowed hard, daring not to utter another word, and declared the price, "Nine million eight hundred thousand dollars!"

"$9.8 million?!" Alyssa Ramos and the buck-toothed man behind Evan nearly fainted upon hearing the price.

They had assumed "pauper" Evan would at most choose a watch in the tens of thousands, but instead, he had gone straight for the most expensive Richard Mille.

"I've made my choice. Now, it's your turn to pay," Evan said to the buck-toothed man with a teasing smirk.

"Are you doing this on purpose? $9.8 million for a watch! Who can afford that?"

Anthony's eyes bulged as if copper gongs, his expression darkening, "I earn a million a year. To buy you this damn watch, I'd have to scrimp and save for a decade! Are you worth that? Deserve I, the mayor's son, go without food and drink for ten years for you?"

Alyssa Ramos's face also turned awkward as she chimed in, "Exactly!"

Evan shook his head with a smile, "So, you can't afford it? Ah, the son of Mayor Taylor, the chief technologist, can't afford it either!"

"It's not about whether we can afford it or not, it's about whether you're worth this watch!"

Alyssa Ramos's voice suddenly spiked, her shrill tone echoing throughout the floor:

Her piercing voice abruptly escalated, drawing the attention of many in the mall, with some even moving closer to investigate.

"Ha, can't afford it and still pretending in front of me?"

Evan, noting a portion of the crowd had drawn near, flashed a hint of color in his eyes, "Whether Mayor Taylor can afford this watch, I do not know. But I can tell you both now, I can afford it! And I can pay in full, upfront!"

Whoosh! His words, like a meteorite plunging into the ocean, instantly stirred up a massive wave of reaction among the bystanders.

"Young man, $9.8 million is not $98. No one will believe a twenty-year-old could buy a watch worth nearly ten million!"

"Mayor Taylor? Oh, that person beside the young man does appear to be Anthony Taylor, son of Mayor Taylor. Why does it look like young Master Taylor is arguing with this lad? What's going on here?"

"..."

"One last question, can you afford it? If you really can't, then don't waste my time. I'll buy it myself!"

Evan paid no mind to the murmurs of the crowd, yawning lazily, "Also, I must remind you, my pocket money is in the millions of dollars. You told me to choose any gift I wanted, and I chose this level, and now you renege on your word!"

"Your pocket money is in the millions of dollars?"

Anthony Taylor, seizing upon Evan's words as if he had caught him by the tail, surveyed the surrounding crowd and announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, please bear witness. I am Anthony Taylor, the Mayor's son. I encountered this person in the mall today and kindly offered to buy him a gift. He chose a $9.8 million watch and now boasts that his usual pocket money is in the millions. Tell me, who can afford a watch at this price? Seeing that I can't purchase it, he's trying to goad me. Ha! This man is nothing but a swindler, aiming to scam my money!"

Alyssa Ramos also quickly supported the claim, "Fellow onlookers, my husband speaks the truth! He only wants to swindle our money. He had a bad record even in school! My husband, the Mayor's son, would never use his father's credibility to deceive anyone!"

With these words, the bystanders began to buzz, most casting doubtful glances at Evan.

"Young man, know when to stop. The son of the mayor is offering you a gift, and you choose the most expensive one? Any reasonable person would have picked a watch worth a few thousand. $9.8 million, that's a princely sum!"

"Pocket money in the millions, yet you're dressed in rags? If you're trying to swindle Master Taylor's money, just say so. He might just indulge you with a few thousand."

"Indeed, he's backed by his father's credibility. Young man, you should leave. It's not right to deceive people like this."

"..."

With a weary gesture, Evan waved his hand, cutting through the chatter. He sighed, "Why is it that when I speak the truth, no one believes me? Well, no matter. Let's proceed with the transaction."

With that, he handed his bank card to the saleswoman and said nonchalantly, "Please, proceed with the payment for the Richard Mille RM63-02 wristwatch."

"Hold on!"

The moment the saleswoman reached for Evan's card, Alyssa Ramos stepped forward, interposing herself between Evan and the saleswoman. "Let's swipe the card somewhere else! How do we know you haven't colluded with her, putting on an act to scam us of our money?"

"Here’s a thought—why not swipe it at the next counter? That will prove if you two are in cahoots!"

The saleswoman, now seething, shot back at Anthony Taylor, "This is the Richard Mille counter. Why should we go elsewhere to process the transaction?"

"How dare you speak to my girlfriend in such a manner?"

Fury bubbled within Anthony Taylor, outraged that a mere sales associate would dare to speak out against him, the mayor's son. Overcome with anger, he raised his hand to strike her.

"Snap!"

"You're far from a gentleman, striking a woman!"

With a swift motion, Evan intercepted Anthony Taylor's hand, stopping the slap in its tracks. "What she's said isn't wrong. Why should I have to swipe my card at another counter?"

Without sparing the mayor's son another glance, Evan turned to the saleswoman with a gentle smile, Charge it!”
