“First, the Moon doesn’t have any inherent color. It shines because its surface reflects the sunlight. During a total lunar eclipse, the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned, with the Earth positioned in the middle, blocking the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon. In theory, the Moon should be completely dark as it receives no direct sunlight. However, in reality, some of the Sun’s rays still manage to indirectly reach the Moon through the Earth’s atmosphere and cast a red, orange, or yellow hue upon it. Specifically, as the Sun’s light passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, certain colors in the light spectrum, such as short-wavelength colors like blue, get filtered out and scattered. Longer-wavelength colors like orange, red, pass through the Earth’s atmosphere and are refracted at the Earth’s edge, casting these hues upon the Moon.”
