CHAPTER NINE

He made up his mind eventually as he had stuff to do. Kevin had managed to put himself in order and looked at the mirror, although he was not impressed seeing himself, he was okay with his looks. At least, he could pass for a person's date. He stood in front of the mirror as he now tried rehearsing how he would talk to her when he saw her that evening. He practiced smiles and gestures but then, his soul was dampened and his eyes lowered. He was not at all confident and was wondering how he would pull this off when his eyes fell on his wrist watch. The time was already going fast and he needed to get her to go on this date with him. He quickly buttoned his shirt sleeves and grabbed his jacket as he stepped out onto the street.

Kevin knew that he would be spending a lot at the hotel but he just needed to get the right cab that would fit into his budget. He glanced around until he found one that seemed to suit his purpose. The cab driver was sleeping from the obvious boredom of having no passengers with his hat over his face. He had adjusted his seat so he could recline and sleep with his legs against the steering wheel. Kevin crossed the street road and went over to meet him as he gently tapped on his window. The man barely moved and he tapped a little louder causing him to suddenly get up and his legs struck the horn as he managed to sit up.

The sound of the horn had been too sudden that Kevin nearly jumped. A dog barked in the distance. The man lowered his window glass as his pinky finger wriggled around his nose in search of dirt. Kevin felt irritated but composed himself.

"Hey, what do you want lad?" the man asked him.

"I was wondering if I could hire your services. I have to go pick someone up and be somewhere." he said to the man.

The man looked at him for his head to toe and then up again as he broke into a smile.

"This a date, boy?" he asked him in a weird accent.

"Well, sort of. Are you going or not?" Kevin asked him.

"Alright boy. Where are we headed?" the man asked.

This was cool actually. Kevin explained it to him and they reached a price. Kevin got into the back as the man drove. He had already agreed that they would pick up Alice and then head for the hotel. From time to time, the can driver would stare at him from the rear view mirror and it kept happening until Kevin began to feel anxious.

"Why do you keep staring at me?" Kevin asked him.

"Who? Me? I'm sorry. I was only wondering, you know." the man said.

"Wondering about what?" Kevin asked him.

"Well, the hotel you're headed to. It fucking expensive and you can barely afford a good cab." the man said.

"Are you trying to say you're not a good cab yourself, sir?" Kevin asked him. He was not enjoying the probing as his mind was wrapped around his timing. He needed to take her out this date seriously and at least get her to see through it with him. Now was not the time for him to entertain unnecessary discussions and he did not mind dissing.

"Of course not young mister. I'm an excellent ride. But you'll see what I mean when you get to the hotel." the man said and that was it.

They drove in silence for a while until they arrived at Alice's home which apparently was also Vanessa's home. He went to the porch and pressed the door bell. Twice he pressed and just when he was beginning to give up all hopes of her going with him, the door yanked open. He turned fully with a smile that dampened the moment he saw it was actually Vanessa at the door.

"Yes?" she asked, placing her hands against the sides of the door, jutting her breast out.

Kevin was not moved. He now harbored this feeling of anger against her and would very much want to bring her pain if possible. The embarrassment she had cost him was more than enough to send him overboard.

"Is Alice ready?" he asked.

She remained silent regarding him from head to toe and then started with a chuckle.

"You know, you never dressed this cool when you were with me." she noted.

"Maybe, you were not worth seeing me this cool." he said to her, matching her sarcasm.

Vanessa started laughing.

"You're funny. Tell me Kevin, who burrowed you the outfit and what did you have to do to get it? Let me guess, you sucked him off or he did it for real?" she asked in her annoying crackling tone.

"Please, can you just let Alice know I'm here?" Kevin asked her.

"Alright sissy boy. Alice, your date is here with some rickety car. I suggest you change into an armor lest you get wounded." she shouted.

They stood there glaring at each other with so much hate until Alice came. She looked really beautiful in her outfit that Kevin himself was totally floored. He looked at her as he sought for words to say but found none as the lady was certainly dashing.

"You look stunning," he said to her.

"Thanks, Kevin. You do not look bad yourself." she said to him.

They were staring at each other when Vanessa broke into their moment with her taunting voice.

"Well Cinderella, you should see the archaic ride your prince charming brought to take you to the ball with." she pointed out.

Alice had just noticed the car and held in the laughter in her mind that was threatening to spill out. She glanced at her sister with a serious face now.

"Leave the man be, Vanessa." she said.

"Shall we?" Kevin asked, giving her his arm.

"Oh yes please. He's such a gentleman, Vanessa." Alice said as they walked away. She had turned and winked at her sister.
