Chapter 5

Gracia was flabbergasted after her ex-high school sweetheart paid the bills in her stead, she then tried to recall the memories of Maverick, who had drastically changed over the past few years.

"Well, I'm off, Gracia," Maverick said, it made Gracia returned to herself at once. He promptly left Gracia and her friends, he then walked out with his three friends.

Once Maverick's figure disappeared, Gracia realized something and slapped her forehead, "Oh my! I forgot to ask for his number!" she exclaimed with a frustrated expression.

Sindi, Gracia's friend, looked at her with a curious expression, "Do you know that guy?"

Gracia nodded slowly. "He was my friend back in high school. Maverick, a good guy, but unfortunately, he didn't have anything back then," Gracia replied softly.

Sindi was surprised by Gracia's statement. "Didn't have anything? Are you kidding, Gracia? He just paid 30,000 dollars without blinking an eye?!"

Gracia nodded again, "You're right, he was really poor. I often treated him for meals from time to time. I wonder if he's successful now?" Gracia muttered, her eyes misting as she looked in the direction Maverick had left.

Sindi looked puzzled upon hearing Gracia’s statement. "Perhaps, he must be very successful man right now," she murmured.

Gracia pulled Sindi's arm. “Yeah, I guess so. Let's go home."

Gracia took her friend home after they experienced an unexpected event that day.

Meanwhile, Maverick and his friends had arrived at the dormitory after having a blast at the kareoke club. They crowded around Maverick, asking questions.

Adrian initiated the conversation, "Mav, who was that beautiful woman earlier?"

Giuly chimed in, "Yeah, who was she Rick, introduce me to her friend."

Jason sighed upon hearing his two friends' questions. "Come on now! You guys can't even see a pretty girl for a second. Though I can’t deny that she was indeed beautiful."

Maverick shook his head, smiling, then replied, "Her name is Gracia, my friend during my high school. Actually, I used to have a crush on her. However, since I didn't have anything back then, I didn't have a courage to her my feelings."

Adrian, Giuly, and Jason exchanged surprised glances. They didn't expect Maverick to know someone as beautiful as her. They looked at him with expressions of astonishment.

Who is Maverick really? Although often considered a loser, he was able to socialize with beautiful women. While the three of them struggled to even get acquainted with any women, even from the middle-class family. Yet Maverick knew Gracia, who could be considered a fairly perfect woman and came from a high-class family.

At Gracia's family home, the girl had just arrived home after not seeing Maverick for so long. With a radiant face, she lay down on her bed while recalling the recent events.

"Four years without seeing him, Maverick looks even more handsome now. I regret never expressing my feelings for him back then," Gracia murmured with a smile, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. She sighed slowly, regretting her former self for not being able to express her feelings.

Indeed, although Maverick was so thin and unkempt back then, Gracia actually liked him. But, pride and pressure from her friends made her hesitate to confess her feelings.

Now, after she met him after a long time, the old feelings she had buried began to resurface. Gracia's mind was filled with thoughts of Maverick. Before she knew it, she smiled from ear to ear and filled with joy.

Gracia opened the drawer, searching for her old notebook. Muttering to herself, "I hope Maverick's number is still there."

After a while, Gracia found the notebook and immediately searched the pages to find Maverick's number that she had written four years ago.

With mixed feelings, Gracia entered the number into her phone. "Hopefully it's still active," she thought as she pressed the 'call' button.

She heard the ringing tone connecting, making Gracia rejoice silently. After a few moments, the call was answered, "Hello.. who is this?"

Gracia suddenly felt confused, spontaneously dialing Maverick's number without thinking about what she wanted to say. As a result, when answered, she fell silent.

"Hello.. hello.." the voice on the other end of the line called out.

Gracia then snapped out of it and bit her lip, feeling nervous for a moment before replying, "Hello, is this Maverick, right?"

The voice on the other end of the phone suddenly fell silent, as if digesting who was calling, before finally responding. "Who is this?"

"M-Maverick, th-this is Gracia," Gracia replied nervously.

"Gracia? You still have my number?!" Maverick asked from the other end of the phone, sounding slightly surprised.

Gracia bit her lower. lip, unsure of what to say, while tapping her foot lightly as if Darius was right in front of her. She felt nervous since it was the first time that she had the courage to call Maverick after so long.

But eventually, they started chatting cheerfully after Maverick sounded so relaxed with Gracia.

They both recounted their past and occasionally laughed together at the memories they had shared. Until finally, Maverick was brave enough to ask Gracia out on a date.

Indeed, Maverick's heart still held a slight feeling for Gracia, and now he felt he had the ability to impress her.

Hearing Maverick's invitation, Gracia didn't refuse. Instead, she felt happy for it. This was an opportunity to repay Maverick's kindness to her at the restaurant and to restart everything from the beginning.

After the call ended, Maverick murmured softly. "I have to double my money quickly, so I can give Gracia a date she'll never forget!" His determination arose with enthusiasm.

The next day, as soon as his classes ended, Maverick immediately looked for a house to buy, according to his current balance. He knew he had to buy something of high value to quickly get cashback from the system.

With determined steps, he entered a real estate company office not far from his campus.

However, as soon as he entered the place, Maverick was startled to see Tania and her boyfriend there. His heart felt like it was being torn into pieces by the unexpected sight.

His emotions surged, suffused with choking frustration. He wished he could immediately flee from the place to avoid them from disrupting his plans.

Without looking back, Maverick turned his body and walked toward the exit. He wanr to avoid them from further humiliating him in front of the people there.

But fate was not so kind. Just as Maverick was about to turn the knob, Marki Vermalen, Tania's boyfriend, called out to him loudly. "Hey... aren't you Maverick Douglas?!"

Marki stepped closer to Maverick, grinning broadly. Tania, upon hearing Marki's call, turned and saw Maverick, then with a sneering expression, she followed her boyfriend.

Hearing that, Maverick immediately stopped and sighed heavily. He knew he couldn't just run away, as it would only make him look like a coward.

Marki sneered as Maverick stopped and looked at him, then said, "What brings a poor guy like you to this place? Don't tell me you're a salesperson for this company?"

Tania also chimed in, her face full of suspicion, "Or are you stalking me, Maverick?!" She said, crossing her arms in front of her chest, glowering at Maverick with her sharp eyes.

Maverick felt as if he was being cornered by the two. His emotions flared up, anger simmered within him. His eyes coldly stared at Marki and Tania. His hands clenched so tightly, his fingernails seemed to dig into the palm of his hand.

Marki's voice rang out loudly, causing the staff and people around them to turn their heads. As if wanting to embarrass Maverick in public.

"Hey, look! Mr. Vermalen is arguing with someone!" exclaimed one of Marki's followers, making everyone turn.

"Wow, poor guy is dealing with Mr. Vermalen!" said a woman.

"He might have offended Mr. Vermalen!" added a man.

Hearing their whispers, everyone who knew Marki looked at Maverick with pity. No one dared to help him when facing the son of one of the wealthy families in Aranca city.
