When Mia told Gabe that Brendon Carillo, the mayor’s son, had given her a job, she saw a rather confused and cute reaction on Gabe’s face.

Gabe blinked a couple of times. “W-What? Why did he give you a job? What job?”

Mia smiled faintly. “Some stupid job, which I rejected.”

“You rejected?” Gabe couldn’t hide the smile in his eyes. “I knew it. You are smart. That’s why you didn’t fall for his bullshit. Nothing’s free in this world, Mia. If he’s helping you and your family, then he must be up to something.”

“Ah-huh,” Mia glanced sideways at him. “Then what about you? What are you up to?”

“Uh… I already told you my goal, didn’t I?” Gabe tried to be as straightforward as possible. “That’s why I leased a store for five years so that I can get Freddy and his wife on track, but I didn’t think they’d act like rich kids who are only entitled to the best kind of jobs. What am I supposed to do with the store now? I feel so stupid right now.”
