chapter seven

Striking Back

The air in the office felt heavy with tension as Daniel walked into the conference room.

It wasn’t just the usual gathering.—something doesn't seem right. Andrew, his boss and the man who had once humiliated him, was seated at the head of the table, looking at him with a disdainful look on his face.

Daniel’s gaze didn’t show fear. He took a seat across from Andrew, spreading his documents neatly in front of him. The system’s voice echoed loudly in his mind: “This is your moment. Show no fear.”

The meeting started, and Andrew quickly took control, throwing out criticisms disguised as questions. Daniel smiled each time as he looked at Andrew and back to the man seated before him. He knows what was going on.

“Daniel, your pitch last week was… unconventional,” Andrew began, leaning back in his chair. “Do you really think this approach will work?”

Daniel met his gaze and smiled. “I do. The client has already approved it, and the initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.” His tone was firm, unyielding.

Andrew’s smirk faltered for a moment, but he quickly recovered. “Well, let’s hope it doesn’t backfire. This company can’t afford risky decisions.”

Daniel leaned forward. “Risk is what moves us forward, Andrew. Staying stagnant will cost us more in the long run.”

A murmur of agreement swept through the room. Several colleagues nodded, clearly impressed by Daniel’s boldness.

For the first time, Andrew looked uneasy.

Word of Daniel’s success began to spread beyond the office. His parents, who had always seen him as the underachiever of the family, started to call more frequently.

“We heard about your promotion,” his mother said one evening over the phone. “Your father and I are so proud of you.”

Daniel smiled faintly, unsure how to process their sudden attention. They had always been quick to praise his siblings while dismissing his efforts. He asked more like the black sheep of the family. The unwanted.

Even Sarah’s family noticed the change. Her sister, who had openly criticized Daniel during their marriage, now seemed almost envious.

“Sarah told us you’ve been doing well,” she said during an unexpected encounter at a coffee shop. “You know, she always said you had potential.” she smiled faintly and gave him a jovial jab on the shoulder.

Daniel’s jaw tightened. He chose not to reply, simply nodded and walked away.

Sarah was parked outside Daniel's apartment building, her hands tightly holding the steering wheel. Over the last few days, she had been going over her choices repeatedly in her head not sure of what to do. But now she has decided. . She picked Andrew because he appeared strong, accomplished, the kind of man who could give her the lifestyle she believed she should have.

However, Andrew was now distant and preoccupied with his own work issues, a lot of which were a result of Daniel's sudden success and imminent rise to power in the organization.

Sarah experienced a wave of remorse when she reminded herself of the expression in Daniel's eyes during their previous conversation. He was no longer the quiet, uncertain man she had left. He had transformed, become more powerful, and she couldn't resist the attraction she now felt towards him. Many women in the organization openly praise him and his name was on the tongue of everyone. He was a catch to any woman now and she cannot let them have her.

Summoning her courage, she exited the car and walked towards his apartment entrance. Before she knocked, she paused briefly.

When Daniel opened the door, it was impossible to read his expression.

"Sarah," he said, his voice soothing yet detached. "What do you want here? Remember we are no longer an item.”

"I just... I wanted to see you. We should talk." she started, her voice shaking a bit. "I've been thinking about our relationship.” About everything that happened.”

Daniel stepped aside, allowing her to enter. The apartment was modest but clean, a reflection of his renewed focus. “ Am all ears.” Daniel said, taking a seat right in front of her.

“I made a mistake, Daniel,” Sarah said, her eyes glistening. “Leaving you was the worst decision of my life.”

Daniel crossed his arms, leaning against the counter. “Really? It take you this long to realize that?”

Sarah flinched at the coldness in his tone. “I thought Andrew was… I thought he was what I needed. But I see now that I was wrong.I allowed my greed to dictate for me what was truly important to me. I'm sorry, Dan.” She said with a sober voice

Daniel gazed at her silently before eventually shaking his head. “Sarah, I dedicated years to trying to bring joy to your life. You decided to deceive me, and now that things are not going as planned for you, you expect to return? Is that it?”

She stepped closer, trying to place her hands on Daniel but he flinched, walking away from her, "That's not how it is!" "I love you, Daniel, still."

Daniel's laughter was bitter. What is love? You don't know the true meaning of that. You appreciated the things you believed I could provide, not the person that I am.”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears. “Please, Daniel. Just give me another chance. I can prove to you that I’ve changed.”

But Daniel shook his head. “I am not interested in going backward. I believe that you have made your decision and I have made mine. We shouldn't be seen taking together or doing any of this.”

He strolled to the entrance, opening the door and gesturing for her to leave. Sarah paused, her shoulders drooping in surrender.

Stepping out into the hallway, Daniel experienced a peculiar feeling of finality. He came to the realization that he no longer required her approval for the first time.

That evening, Daniel sat on his couch and thought about the day when the system's voice interrupted.“System voice; You handled that well,” it said. “But there’s more to come. Andrew won’t back down easily, and neither will Sarah. Are you ready for what’s next?”

Daniel nodded to himself, a determined look in his eyes. “I’m ready.”

He knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but for the first time in years, he felt in control of his destiny.
