Chapter 3

James walked into the hospital room which had over time begun to smell like medicines and blood. He had over time gotten used to the smell of death hovering all over the room. He stared at his father who had been sedated so he could sleep peacefully.

He had been that way for over two years now. James had begun to lose hope that one day he would ever get better.

As he watched his father’s heartbeat on the monitor, he couldn't help regretting the fact that he was trapped in the situation he was in with the Browns, especially with the fact that Sarah hated him.

As he stared at the monitor lost in thought, he did not notice the lines had begun to move faster, until the beeping sound began to rise and his father began to convulse.

When James was back, Sarah was carefully picking out her silk black one-hand short dress. It had been slit up her left thigh.

“Where are you going?” He asked.

Sarah sat propped on the wooden furniture piece, which had been draped with an animal Skin, and placed across the large window which stood opposite the bed, in their room on the top floor of the hotel building.

"None of your business." She said casually.

James sighed.

"I'm still your husband."

"Husband?" Sarah turned towards him, her eyes flashing with anger and some other complex emotions, "You are just some boy my Father picked from the slumps. You are just trying to leech off my Father in the name of repaying some debt. You will always be the filthy, dirty, security guard of my Company and you had better know your place in this house and in this marriage!"

He watched as she placed each diamond bracelet and earring on her ears. She was indeed a beautiful woman. She applied her red lipstick carefully on her lips smacked her lips together to mix it up properly and then she used her mascara to thicken her already beautifully thick lashes.

As she walked towards the bathroom. James looked at her back, wondered where exactly she was headed.

But he needed to ask no more, as her phone rang on the bed where she had dropped it before she went to sit in front of the dressing mirror.

He peered at the phone screen secretly and the called ID said, 'Peter Causey'. Before he could utter his surprise, she was already there in front of him with the phone to her ear.

James remembered her call that morning and how her Secretary had spoken about Peter Causey's agreement to do business with her. He knew Peter Causey, the man was a lecherous and notorious rapist, who took advantage of unsuspecting young women.

"No way. Sarah knew nothing about that?" He thought to himself.

"Hello? Mr. Causey, yes, oh no, you did not have to do that. Yes, I will have my driver bring me there. " She giggled loud enough, purposely.

James knew it was her tricks, but it still hurts him.

"Alright, I will be there as soon as possible." She cut the call with a smile.

"Are you going on a date  Peter Causey?" James asked her, more harsh than he thought.

"Since when were my activities any of your business? Just because the mistake of a lifetime happened between us, does not give you the right to talk to me or even question my movements." She said sternly to him.

James ignored the tone in her voice.

"You can't go out with that man, he is not the kind of man you want to do business with." James warned her.

"Honestly, you have something wrong with your brains. How would a pauper like you know about the standards of a man such as Peter Causey?" She asked.

James knew that arguing with her would be a waste of time, and as much as he wanted to stop her, he knew she would not listen to him, so he decided to try a different approach.

"I'll go with you, I believe you would need an escort with you," he said refusing to explain why he did not want her to go alone.

"My goodness, can you be that dumb?" She said in an icy tone.

"It is late. Can't Mr. Causey wait until morning?" He asked her ignoring her tone of voice again.

"Seriously? I dare not let Mr.Causey wait another minute. My business depends on him." Sarah said, turned away with no hesitation.

"Peter Causey is a dangerous man and you have to be careful, okay? Please and so I am coming with you.," He insisted.

"I forbid you to take such steps or even come within a mile of me. I don't need you to babysit me," she said, getting upset.

"Besides, isn't it ironic? That someone like you, who can barely take care of herself, feels the need to take care of me. I think you should focus on more important things like your daddy's little project at the hospital and keep living off my father's wealth like you always have." She replied and went back to her dressing room.

James stared at the spot where she had stood, he had gotten used to her vile comments, even when it was about his father.

Although it was not the reason, he decided to follow her, even when she insulted him uselessly.
