"W-what's happening?"Alice asked apprehensively.
By then, Drake's ears got on an alternate sound from the far off shouts.Mr. Tyrion, Alice, and he all looked up at the sky. They did, as did everyone else around them.Car windows, houses, and shops that lined the sidewalk, all had heads sticking out;The sky was in everyone's view.A long line of planes were flying side-by-side in the distance.Drake's back neck hair stood up as they got closer; There were no distinctive markings on the planes to help him determine where they had come from.A cold steel grey was used to paint them all."Why are all those planes flying in our direction?"Mr. Tyrion, still pale from the destruction of the clock tower, questioned. For the remainder of the day, there shouldn't be any more seaplanes arriving to deliver anything;in point of fact, they are not even seaplanes."The belly hatches opened as the planes in the line got closer to the city's edge.As soon as he saw this, Drake broke out in a cold sweat and violently got up, knocking his chair over.He moved in the direction of Alice."Drake, what are you doing here?!"Drake grabbed Alice by the wrist and sped off down the sidewalk in the opposite direction of the planes that were approaching."I got a genuinely horrendous inclination about this!"Drake elaborated as he led Alice alongside him as he maneuvered among the pedestrians on the sidewalk.Let's go find shelter somewhere, because I always think it's better to be safe than sorry!“Shelter?”Alice recited. From where?"I believe those planes will soon drop bombs!"As he continued to run, Drake informed her.Seriously, where is it?“B-bombs?”Surprised and perplexed, Alice stumbled. As they continued to run, Drake continued to scan the sidewalk's surface without saying anything. There! He noticed a handle-equipped steel cover in the sidewalk. It was a hatch that led into the maintenance shafts that housed the city's wave motion generators, which generated power. The generators on the city's bottom side generated electricity using the movement of the waves. These shafts allowed those in charge of maintaining the city's power to descend and conduct daily inspections. When they first arrived in Atlantis City, everyone was given a basic explanation of what to do in an emergency. They were to locate one of these hatches in order to climb down into for safety in the event of a disaster above ground. It was intended to be sufficiently deep to guarantee safety.Drake stopped in front of the hatch, grabbed the handle, and then continued on.He resisted.Hard.It was, regrettably, locked."Bless it!"Drake swore. He pulled as hard as he could on the handle. He could hear the aircraft approaching. He finally flung the hatch open with a loud snap as he broke the handle's latch. With a loud boom, the door hit the ground. The darkness was entered by a ladder that was made visible."Hold on!"Drake yelled before diving down the shaft. He slid down the shaft at top speed after grabbing the ladder's sides.Alice, shaken, attempted to climb in with one foot on the ladder's top. However, Atlantis City was shaken to its core at that point by the initial blast. When he was coming down, Drake had slid down the ladder as quickly as he could. Before the city was shaken by the first explosion, he had descended the ladder approximately eighty feet.Drake was thrown off the ladder and hit his head on the wall behind him when he heard a number of other explosions occurring almost simultaneously. He fell another twenty feet in a daze before hitting the ground at the ladder's bottom and falling unconscious. As the floor violently shook beneath his back, he lost consciousness and regained it later. He could hear the explosions' distant sound in his ears.He had no clue about how long he was oblivious for, yet he got up with a beginning and sat up.He was surrounded by piles of broken concrete, and every few seconds a new piece would fall from the ceiling, which was badly cracked, and hit the ground with a clack. He was fortunate that none of the debris had hit him. After that, Drake quickly assessed the state of his body.Despite the nicks and scratches on his body and soreness from the fall, he appeared to be fine otherwise.Drake cautiously touched the large bump that had developed on the back of his head after being struck twice hard. His head was pierced by a sharp pain.He curled up into a ball for a moment as the pain subsided, sharply taking in his breath.Yet again he then, at that point, stood up and took in his environmental factors.I don't seem to be going to find anyone alive down here.He reached for his phone; It had somehow survived the fall unharmed.Drake turned it on with hope, but as soon as he realized there was no signal, his hopes quickly vanished. To receive a signal, there probably isn't enough concrete above me.When a sudden thought came to him, he violently looked up.He was at the very bottom of the ladder shaft, so he tried to look straight up the shaft to see what had happened to Alice.Sadly, there was very little light; He could barely make out smoke at the top of the shaft, which was obscuring the sunlight, and the shaft's lights were out of order.“Alice?!”He yelled, encircling his mouth with his hands as he called the ladder up.Are you present?”No response was provided.Drake grabbed one of the ladder rungs with the intention of finding her and began slowly ascent, occasionally calling Alice's name.He had no way of getting back to the top if he rushed because it appeared that the ladder had partially broken loose from the wall.Drake finally reached the top and pulled himself out of the shaft after climbing for a few minutes. After taking a breather, he got up to take in the city he had called home.It was a total failure. There were smoldering fires everywhere, and no building was standing; Between the smoke, he could see the entire city of Atlantis laid out in front of him.Gazing at his environmental elements, Drake moved forward. When he stepped into something that was wet, he almost lost his footing, but his foot came out from under him.Drake regained his composure after catching himself and then raising one foot to examine what he had stepped on.The sole of his shoe was totally red.Drake noticed that he had stepped in a pool of blood as he was sweating and looked down.He could also see them as he looked around more closely.Corpses.He was surrounded by hundreds of thousands of now-dead corpses whose blood stained the streets and rubble.Drake threw up and fell to his knees. He couldn't stand the sight of anyone else's blood; This was pure cruelty.Drake wiped the vomit from his lips and wondered, "What the hell is going on?" Was this a psychological oppressor assault or something like that?!He vomited once more after taking a second look at his surroundings, but this time there was nothing in his stomach, so only hot bile came out instead. This is illogical!Who would act in such a way?He raised his head and exhaled deeply.“Alice?!?!?!”He screamed at the top of his voice.Alice?!Can I be heard?Make a statement!Just do something to show me you're okay!Drake's own echoes were the only thing that responded.“ANYONE?!”Drake's yelling went on.Is anyone else out there?!"Drake's ears only picked up echoes once more.No way.Drake's body went limp and his mind went blank. Is it true that nobody else is here?I survived the bombing, but am I the only one?Just at that moment, he heard footsteps close by, and his ears picked them up.Numerous of them were there.Although the figures that emerged from the smoke were not a search and rescue team, Drake looked in the direction it was coming from.A dozen or so people emerged from the smoke wearing black tactical gear from head to toe and masks covering their faces. All of them were armed with semi automatic weapons that appeared to be very lethal.Drake knew right away that these guys belonged to the group that was behind the massacre before him.As he pointed daggers at the men, he felt an unbelievably strong feeling of hatred well up within him."What's going on?"One of the assailants said,We really have a survivor here! What a lucky brat!Another of them said, pointing to the ladder shaft with his gun's muzzle, "He probably hid in that, Sarge."The child's quick thinking was quite impressive; That will be his.The first one said in a rude voice, "Doesn't matter."He aimed the gun at Drake and slung it over his shoulder. In a moment, he'll just be another casualty.""Who were you?"Drake almost said nothing. The sarge slightly lowered his weapon.Did you harm the city in any way?”The sarge responded, confidently raising his gun to rest on his shoulder and saying, "Yeah, we did."Why is it important to you?"What's the point?"Enraged, Drake echoed. You should never have asked such a stupid question! And why on earth would you do this in the first place?”The sarge responded by saying, "Just following orders, kid," pointing the gun once more at Drake. When I shoot you, just shut up and become a nice, quiet corpse."Why, you—!"Drake got going. The gun went off abruptly. The ground violently shook at that very moment. The sarge's miss-aimed bullet struck the ground far to Drake's right, causing the black men to lose their balance. The force of the shaking threw Drake backward, and he came to a stop just short of the ladder shaft. Why is the ground trembling so much? The sarge screamed,Give me an answer, please!Sarge: "A-Atlantis City must be falling apart!"A man from his men yelled."The bombing must have destroyed the supports!"Another yelled, "We'll end up going swimming if we don't leave right away!"Bless it!"Sarge bleated. He turned away from Drake, who was having trouble standing up.Get out of here before this building collapses! The men then started to run away."W-wait, you scumbags!"Drake yelled and extended a hand as he stood up once more.Where the f--- do you think you are?Drake lost his balance and fell into the ladder shaft as a result of a subsequent violent shaking. He closed his eyes and waited for the moment when he would fall to the ground and splatter, "Damn, I guess this is really it."I'm sorry, Alice, that I was unable to safeguard you.I hope that when I get there, you will forgive me.Following a couple of additional seconds, Drake opened his eyes once more.I ought to have reached the bott
Flying between two of the stone pillars was a massive figure, certainly larger than any of the dragons currently present at Drake’ location. Close behind the figure followed two more, slightly smaller than the first, one on the right and the other on the left. As the figures approached the thunder of dragons already gathered, they began to lower their altitude until they landed on the very edge of the topmost outer ring of steps. They were dragons, but very different from most of the dragons Drake had seen thus far. The most prominent difference was their size; unlike most of the other dragons in the crowd, who all stood about three to almost four times Drake’ height, they were somewhat bigger. The one in the middle was about five times as tall as Drake, while the two behind him were about four and a half. Drake could also get the feeling that these three were very powerful; the whole crowd of dragons grew quiet as they approached.A humanoid dragon flew out of the crowd of dragons ga
This dragon was also red in color, but it was more of a blood-red than crimson. Its head greatly resembled that of the Chinese dragons, and two long red whiskers grew from its snout like a mustache. A mane of black hair extended from behind the pair of horns protruding from its forehead, and a pair of spectacles rested on the top of his snout. It also had a short, black beard. Like Drake, its eyes were also an unusual combination of colors; instead of white, its sclerae were a shade of red darker than its skin, and its pupils were bright green. The skin covering the dragon’s body was taut from the muscular form it possessed. There was a cross-shaped scar right where the heart should be located. Its underbelly and the skin between its wing spines were a dull shade of pink, and small black fins sprouted from the back of his neck down to the tip of its tail. As Drake continued to watch it, the wings on the dragon began to shift and squirm. After a moment, they began to retract into the d
Drake stared at Bastian in shock for a few seconds, unable to process what the king had pronounced. After the shock faded away, Draco could almost feel the anger welling up in Drake from where he stood.“Why, you--!” Drake started.Whack. Draco decided this moment was the best time to knock Drake out and did so with a quick and precise strike with his tail to the back of Drake’s neck. Drake’s body went rigid for a second before it went limp, held in place by the chains binding him. Draco proceeded to bow deeply to his king.“I apologize for my actions just now, King Bastian,” Draco stated as the crowd of dragons began to disperse and fly out of the grotto. Some were either irritated with the outcome of the trial or puzzled by their king’s uncharacteristic behavior during said trial. “I thought it was wise to render him unconscious before the boy said something that would cause a worst-case scenario for himself, so I took preemptive measures. Please excuse me from acting on my own acco
“Very well, will do.” With that last comment, Bastian, along with Damrabe and Reothad, left the grotto, leaving Draco alone with a half-conscious Drake.“Now then, let’s get this place cleaned up.” Draco whipped the ground with his tail once. As soon as he did so, multiple changes rapidly occurred throughout the cavern. With a loud crack, the makeshift throne shattered into infinitesimal dust. The lower levels of the amphitheater shuddered and rose until all the steps became leveled with the ground, making it look like it had never existed in the first place. Finally, all the chains binding Drake, except for the one attached to his neck collar disintegrated with a pop. The stone pillars holding the whole structure up began to groan and crack as Draco calmly wrapped a length of Drake’s neck chain around his right hand. After the first two or three pillars gave in to the pressure they were under and literally exploded, Draco finally unfolded his wings and jumped into the air. He took
The dragon was humanoid, and by far the oldest Drake had seen yet; its dark gold hide was leathery and wrinkled. Its underbelly scales and wing skin was parchment colored, and a pair of spectacles identical to Damrabe’s sat on the dragon’s snout, in front of a set of gold colored eyes. Also, like D'arabe, its head was like that of a Chinese dragon, and a mane of white hair extended from behind its horns, and a tuft of it tipped its tail. It sported a short, white beard.Poseidon wiped the ink on his talon off on a cloth tacked to the table, took off his spectacles, and looked up at Draco. “Welcome back, Draco. In charge of transporting the new prisoners again?”Draco grimaced. “You know perfectly well that your grandson should be doing that,” he growled.“I do,” Poseidon responded. “And where would my grandson be this time?”“Took off with the king to watch his son in action,” Draco snorted. “I think he just wanted to get out of seeing you again.”The aged dragon sighed. “Yes, well, t
Drake was planning to just eat in peace at the foot of the wall beneath Poseidon’s cave, but someone threw an empty bowl at him, which shattered at his feet. Whatever chatter had been going on quickly died off as Drake looked up at the person responsible for the broken bowl. Sitting at a table set up nearby was a creature that was mostly human in appearance, but it was much taller than a human and had light-blue skin covering its overly muscular body. He wore a pair of brown animal fur pants, and his red eyes sneered at Drake as he picked his teeth with a fork, bare feet up on the table.“Hey, newbie, I’m still hungry,” he said, his lower canine teeth jutting out past his lips. “Gimme your food.”Drake said nothing and stepped over the broken bowl as he continued to his destination. Not liking the cold shoulder he had received, the creature slammed his feet on the floor and stood up, at least a head and shoulders higher than a basketball player. With large strides, he quickly caught u
“All done,” Damrabe announced as he pulled two empty test tubes out of his sash. “I might as well get a couple of blood samples while I’m here; I’m interested in learning more about this boy.” Uncorking the test tubes, he pointed his middle and index finger at the blood dribbling from Drake’ mouth and made a come here gesture. Following his command, the blood lifted itself off Drake’ face and flew through the air until it poured itself into the empty test tubes. Corking them up, Damrabe put them back in his sash and stood up. He turned around to meet Poseidon’s quiet gaze.“Well done,” Poseidon commented. “Blood healing and blood control. Both powerful skills belong to those of the Sanguis Draconis dragon species.”“Shut up!” Damrabe suddenly spat, losing his composure. “I’m not of that class; I’m a half-breed between that and your Anear Draconis species. You know that.”“Indeed.” Poseidon’s eyes unfocused as he gazed out into space. “How I wish your mother was still with us.”Damrabe
The gate in front of Drake’ waiting room was lifted, allowing Draco to walk out and join Bastian in the middle of the arena. His eyes darted down to Drake before returning his gaze to Bastian and uttering a short snort. “It appears we won’t find ourselves with a moment’s respite while Drake is around.”“Indeed,” Bastian agreed. He focused his eyes on Draco. “Can I trust you to carry the lad to the infirmary? Judging by the performance we just witnessed, he will require some rest before he can muster the energy to fight again.”Draco silently dipped his head towards the Dragon King before bending over and gently scooping Drake up in one hand. “You know that we cannot leave him like this. If we don’t make an effort to teach him to control his magic, then--.”“I am aware of what must be done,” Bastian interrupted Draco quietly, his flat tone causing his advisor to fall silent. His tail slapped the ground a few times. “Needless to say, I will be making the necessary preparations for Drake

“Move,” Vinzgar hissed, glaring at Poseidon. Poseidon returned the glare and remained silent as he refused to budge from the spot.“Vinzgar,” Bastian started, “I can understand what you are trying to do here. However, you know as well as I do that we need to let this match continue for the time being. If we interrupt it, we’ll never be able to see how Drake handles himself if his emotions flare up after winning the games and starts investigating things on his own down below on the surface. This is the perfect test to see whether or not we can trust him to act properly on his own out in the world.”Vinzgar growled dangerously but didn’t respond; he couldn’t refute what his king had just said. After glaring with Poseidon for a few more moments, he humped and turned back around, sitting back down on his throne as he resumed watching the match.Brock was back on his feet, cautiously observing Drake as he remained standing on the spot motionlessly, still glaring at Brock. Brock finally spo
“Is there a problem, Damrabe?” the crimson-scaled dragon king questioned, an eyebrow raised. Something caught Bastian’s eyes, and he and everyone else in the room proceeded to stare at it in shock. One of the test tubes of blood in Damrabe’s sash glowed red-hot as it visibly vibrated in its slot. As everyone continued to observe the spectacle, the test tube shattered without warning, sending shards of glass and droplets of blood flying throughout the room. Wherever the blood splattered, be it on skin, scales, cloth, or stone, the surface splattered immediately sizzled and burned black. Several dragons hissed in pain as their skin and scales were burned.“What the hell just happened!?” Vinegar growled, shock evident in his voice. “Damrabe, what was that!?”“I...I don’t know!” Damrabe responded as he attempted to heal his right hand and torso, which had received the brunt of the blood exploding. “All I can tell you is that vial contained a sample of Drake’s blood that I took from him tw
Back up in the top box where Bastian and the Dragon Council observed the battles, Reothand and Poseidon entered the room. Bastian turned around and looked at them, raising his eyebrow in a silent question.Poseidon shook his aged, golden head and stroked his beard. “We didn’t find anyone in the magical maintenance room, but we did find evidence that the lottery-system spell used to randomly determine matchups had been tampered with. All the crystal ball surveillance cameras had been smashed, as well.”Prismo groaned, covering his face with his left hand. “None of the guards openly admitted to seeing anything, either,” he added to Poseidon’s statement. “My hunch says someone with the Shadow Strikers may be involved in this.”Several sets of eyebrows shot up at the mention of the Shadow strikers. “The Shadow Strikers is that group of assassins-for-hire, correct?” Vinegar questioned. “Why would they be involved in this?”“Isn’t that obvious?” Bastian asked, looking down at the fight belo
“This year, we have a slew of new and old participants in these bloody games! In addition to the two-time runner up dragon Balara, we also have a prisoner who’s convicted of stealing the Orb of the First King! Who’s excited to see what these two are capable of during the games? I know I am!”Drake slapped his forehead as the crowd cheered even louder when the announcer brought him up. What the hell is wrong with these people?“Now then, let’s get the ball rolling! We have one hundred and twenty-eight prisoners that passed the assessment exam and made it to the games this year! That means we’ll have seven rounds of one-on-one fights, so there will be plenty of time to watch the carnage in the arena! Let’s begin with deciding the first match for the day! There’s something wrong with that MC. Is he a frickin’ devil or something? Drake stood up from the cot and walked over the iron gate. The arena was set on the ground and was separated from the elevated stands by a large wall. Standing j
Drake placed another neat stack of parchment on a shelf before replying. “I happen to think so. I can’t really do anything else right now to prepare myself, can I?”“Yes, you can,” Poseidon told him. “There’s more to the games than just a simple fighting tournament. Did anyone give you details on it?”“Ugh, no.”Poseidon leaned back in his chair and sighed, the wood creaking under his weight. “Very well, allow me to explain what the games entail.” He glanced at a sheet of parchment laying on his desk. “The Prisoners’ Games is a fighting event open for public viewing that’s set in a tournament bracket. This year, one hundred twenty-eight prisoners passed the assessment exam, so that means you’ll have to win seven matches to come out the winner. The first round will take up the first day or two, depending on how fast the matches come to an end. The tournament will speed up as we progress to the later rounds as prisoners are weeded out.”“Hold on, this event is open to the public? Why?”
“Easy, easy, Vinzgar!” Bastian soothed, placing his hand on Vinzgar’s shoulder once more to calm him down. “None of us here believe that statement; for that matter, Zero, Boreta, and I know you far too well to even consider this a possibility from you.”Drake had his hand on his chin, deep in thought as Bastian calmed down Vinegar. He then looked up at Bastian.“There’s three possible answers that I can think of, Bastian,” he said. All the dragons turned to look at him. “One, Vinegar is lying. I can’t say much about him since I hardly know Vinzgar, but if you trust him, that’s a good enough reason to rule that possibility out.”Bastian and several others nodded at this.“Two, there’s the chance that Vinzgar was somehow controlled against his will when that order was placed and has no memory of it.”“That’s nearly impossible,” Boreta interjected, shaking her head. “Magic might not be the Killing family’s strong point, but Vinzgar has an exceptionally high amount for his family. And bra
“Thanks for the info, Brock” Drake shouted as he was yanked into the air. Drake thought it might be best to avoid drawing unwanted attention to Draco, so he didn’t say anything to the dark gray dragon. Drake and his two guards exited the cavern and started flying in the direction of the rising sun. Blinded by the light, Drake was forced to keep his eyes closed for the next several minutes as his hair whipped in the wind. His hair had barely grown out over the past month, but his spiky bangs were now threatening to cover his eyes.Suddenly, the two guards changed course and shot straight up into the sky, increasing their speed dramatically. The wind force tore Drake’s eyelids apart, and he watched as they continued to rise higher and higher, bursting through the clouds. There was an incredibly bright flash of blue light that forced Drake to close his eyes, and he heard a loud sonic boom that surrounded him, deafening his ears. Then all was quiet, and Drake slowly opened his eyes. The b
