Chapter #04

"Hey you, hurry up and earn some money! What are you doing sitting down? I told you, just accept my offer!" with a loud yell, Mrs. Grace cursed Kelly who was still limply sitting in the corner of the living room.

With shaky steps, Kelly finally stepped out to look for work.

Kelly had always been diligent and brave. She had been run away by her biological mother since she was a child, and she loved her father very much.

Kelly still remembers the whole incident in his eyes.

Her father was helpless when facing his mother's new husband's men at that time.

In her heart Kelly promised never to accept forgiveness from her own mother. How did she also get dumped by her own mother when she was ten years old.

Meanwhile, Brandon, whose only job is to extort people at the market, has never gotten along with Kelly even though he has lived under the same roof since childhood.

Mrs. Grace warned Brandon not to get too close to his half-sister.

The characters of the two of them were completely opposite.

Kelly since childhood was a diligent child and good at getting along with anyone.

Brandon, on the other hand, was a lazy boy who hung out with classy people despite being poor himself.

He was pretentious to hang out with the children of the rich.

Meanwhile, Brandon was collecting security money from the market traders.

Sometimes he would insist if a merchant didn't have money or a salesperson.

Brandon usually brought his friends, between three and four of them.

"Hurry up and pay the security fee!" Brandon snapped at one of the vendors.

The vendors couldn't do anything about it. They had to pay all kinds of fees, such as security fees, parking fees and others.

They were burdened by the illegal levies, even though their income was not that much.

"Brandon, we have asked all the traders for the money. Now we just need to count the money," said Billy.

"If someone dares not to pay, beat them to a pulp," Brandon replied.

"There were two people who always avoided paying. But they paid after I kicked them and messed up their merchandise," said Billy.

"Good job! Don't let them dare to fight us, Billy! If they unite against us, we're finished. That's why we always put pressure on them, so that they don't get together with each other while trading," Brandon explained at length.

All his men nodded their heads in understanding.

"Clean up everything! Leave no stone unturned!" Brandon snapped again.

Meanwhile, Kelly tried to offer herself as a caregiver for the handicapped.

Kelly went to the address listed on the announcement.

To get to the place, Kelly had to take several public transportation rides.

Until finally he found the address he was aiming for.

Kelly was dumbfounded to find that the house was like a palace.

The front yard was like a golf course with green grass.

Kelly ventured to ask one of the gate guards.

One of the guards approached Kelly and took the initiative to ask her directly.

"Excuse me miss, what are you doing here?"

At first Kelly was nervous to answer the guard's question.

Kelly gathered her courage to answer.

"I saw a flyer on every street, that this host is in need of a nurse. May I meet this host?"

The guard didn't answer Kelly's counter-question right away, instead he watched Kelly from head to toe.

Only then did the guard answer as he opened the gate slightly.

"Do you know the conditions?"

"I have read all the conditions, I will comply with all the conditions," Kelly replied firmly.

"Alright then, who are you here with?" the guard asked again.

"I came alone, sir!" replied Kelly.

The guard escorted Kelly to the host who needed a nurse.

Arriving at the door, the guard told Kelly to wait while he called the host.

Not long after, a middle-aged woman with a very elegant appearance came out, making Kelly feel inferior in front of her.

"Are you the one who wants to apply for a job as a nurse?"

"That's right, ma'am! I'm the one who applied for the job. And I've read all the requirements," Kelly replied.

"What's your name, miss?" asked the middle-aged woman named Paula.

"My name is Kelly, I'm single and I don't have a family," Kelly replied lightly and tried to remain calm.

"Are you able to fulfill all the conditions?" asked Mrs. Paula, wanting to make sure.

"Because many have failed with the conditions that I gave. If you just want to play around, it's better for you to withdraw from now on," Mrs. Paula added.

Kelly looked straight into Madame Paula's eyes as he replied,

"Does Madame still doubt that I have come from so far away? If only my home was close by, I wouldn't have bothered to look for this job and Madame's house! If I can't make it in a month, Madame can dismiss me."

"Wow, I really like your speaking style. Are you highly educated, miss?" asked Madame Paula.

"I have never enjoyed higher education, as financial constraints prevented me from continuing my studies," Kelly replied.

"Wew, what a shame! Why didn't you continue your studies? Aren't there many scholarship programs for people who can't afford it?" Madame Paula asked again.

"I'd rather work than go to university, because my father needs money for his treatment. Actually, I feel it's unethical that when my father needs treatment, I'm taking care of someone else. But what can I do, I do everything I can to pay for my father's medical expenses," Kelly explained.

"What is your father's illness, miss? Is your mother no longer able to take care of your father?" asked Madame Paula.

"My father had a mild stroke at first, but gradually the disease got worse. I tried to find alternative treatments, but there has been no change," replied Kelly, who had tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry about your father's condition, miss! But you should know that my son is much more seriously ill than your father.

Because since childhood he has never felt playing with his friends. His childhood has been taken away by his illness which has yet to be cured. You can imagine, how sad my son is, he can't feel his childhood like other normal children," said Mrs. Paula.

"May I meet Madame's son?" Alya asked.

"Even if you don't ask, I'll show you in person," Mrs. Paula replied.

Mrs. Paula led Kelly to her son's room where he was lying on his bed.

Mrs. Paula opened the door to her son's room, then introduced Kelly to her son.

"Miss Kelly, this is my son! His name is Majid.

Kelly looked at Majid who was lying weakly on his bed, she could imagine her father who was also lying helpless on his bed.

Her empathy began to emerge when Majid tried to speak but no sound could be heard.

Looking at his face, Majid looked handsome and sweet for a young man.

His skin was pure white, only his face had a few sideburns.

"What do you think after seeing my son's condition firsthand?

Do you still want to equate it with your father's condition?" asked Mrs. Paula sternly.

"Sorry ma'am, I didn't mean to equate my father's condition with your son! But in my opinion, both of them are equally unable to do anything and can only lie in their beds. The difference is that Madam's son has been like this since childhood, his childhood has been lost. May I know the cause of her paralysis, ma'am?" Kelly asked back.

"You won't want to hear about it, it's too complicated to tell," Mrs. Paula replied.

"Is it so difficult to tell, ma'am? Or is there a secret that cannot be revealed about the paralysis of your daughter?" asked Kelly curiously.
