Benson's mind raced back to the earlier confrontation. The realization hit him hard. "Gabriel?" he muttered, almost to himself. "But he was just—"

"He's a man of significant influence, more than you could imagine," Mr. Rhinold cut in sharply, though not wanting to admit it was Gabriel. "You should have known better, Benson. Your actions have consequences."

Desperation crept into Benson's voice. "Please, Mr. Rhinold, I can fix this. Let me talk to him. I will apologize and make amends. Just give me a chance."

Mr. Rhinold gave him a long, measured look. "It's too late, Benson. The decision is final. Learn from this and be more careful about whom you choose to cross in the future."
