JIE voluntarily surrendered himself at night when he couldn’t mine an orb. He toughened himself despite seeing dead bodies around him; some were severely injured from the flogging while the others were being carried in the stretchers coming from the arena and going to the iron lift descending to the depths of Dreqin.
“Ethros, please don’t do it.” Kafle persisted in persuading him, knowing his idea was suicide.
Jie silently swallowed. His decision was firm. He’d rather take his chances to see what the fight was all about. Aside from his curiosity, it was his way of making penance because he couldn’t save Nyssa, no matter how hard he tried.
“If I get killed, please tell my sister what happened here.”
“Ethros…”
“But I'll make sure to stay alive, so I'll be the one to tell her. That sounds better, isn’t it?” He stepped down the stairs and strolled towards the fighting chamber.
Kafle could see that he was determined. The elf carried his daughter and scurried behind the young man.
“Be careful, Ethros!” Kafle’s voice slowly faded, and the cheering of the guards and orb hunters around became louder.
This is it.
As he carefully examined the place, Jie clenched his fist hard. Unfortunately, he couldn’t see a single chance of escaping. The fighting chamber was enclosed with only one entrance and exit. The guards were everywhere, and there were about a hundred spectators.
There was a metal cage surrounding the elevated stage. Jie estimated the small arena was approximately three hundred square meters, ideal for close combat.
I can do this. I'm up for the challenge.
Despite Jie’s uncertainty, he clung to his confidence that his training with Aelec would not betray him. He had polished his hand-to-hand combat, and he had already made use of his two bamboo sticks. It might look harmless, but hitting the right spot can weaken the enemy.
“What a useless weapon!” One of the guards cackled, and the rest laughed as well.
Jie didn’t mind them. He was focused on his possible opponent. Could it be a human or a monster?
Come on. He positioned himself in a fighting stance.
“This will be a thrilling fight! Will this kid be the next champion, or will he end up like the Veris, the loser?” The announcer hyped up the crowd.
The crowd went berserk. “Kil! Kill! Kill!”
A snarl reached Jie’s ear, and he drew a deep breath in anticipation.
“This newcomer will fight our newly acquired beast from the Desert Wasteland—the azugaur!”
People started murmuring. Even Kafle and Izora gazed at each other in shock at a distance.
Jie had no idea what an azugaur was. But he somehow expected it to be kind of a monster. He’d encountered plenty of them before, and Aelec trained him to fight their kind.
I can make it out here alive.
Jie’s heartbeat began to pound. As solace, he reminded himself that the creatures he battled in Ardhi Village might have been even more formidable.
“Unleash it!” The announcer shrieked.
Suddenly, a massive creature came into the cage and lunged at Jie. He almost lost his footing, but thankfully, his reflexes were quick.
As Kafle watched the fight, it was evident that Ethros was meant to be fed to this starving beast. The azugaurs were an infamous predator in the Wasteland. The guards knew that the kid was weak and would not stand a chance against the monster.
But for some reason, Kafle could detect a formation of small yet compact energy at Ethros’ core. If only the impeding shackle didn’t restrain his elf's ‘Sight’, he could easily determine what that thing was. Probably the minor orb he obtained was awakened.
“This is not fair!” Jie complained amidst his quick movement to dodge the monster’s massive fang. Although he was quite familiar with the monsters around the Nirvana Metropolis, he had never seen this kind.
The azugaur looked like a monstrous dog with two heads, long saber teeth, and deadly claws. His bloody eyes glared at him, ready to devour. It had one horn on each head.
Aelec’s voice reverberated inside Jie’s mind.
“Every monster has a weakness; you just have to find it…”
Weakness.
Jie studied the anatomy of the monster; its skin appeared impenetrable because of the fish-like scales covering its flesh.
The monster growled. A slimy purple liquid came through its mouth. It spitted at him, and when the liquid reached the ground, it smoked and created small craters around him.
“Holy fuck!” Jie gritted his teeth. He couldn’t find an opening to attack.
“Ethros, be careful with its saliva. It's poison!” A familiar voice shouted.
It was Kafle who made his way through the other side of the cage. He carried Izora on his shoulder.
“Is he dumb? Why carry a useless weapon?” Izora murmured in irritation. “Two bamboo sticks, my goddess!”
Kafle pretended not to hear her. He was more focused on Ethros, who seemed well-trained in close combat. Even though there was a vast difference in their sizes, the beast could not land a fatal blow. However, after a lot of struggling, Kafle witnessed something that made him bet his freedom on this young man.
Ethros started to launch an attack. He was incredibly fast, despite sustaining an injury for the past few days. He used his two bamboo sticks to hit the heads of the beast, and they appeared useless.
The captain of the guards kept laughing as if observing something funny. He held a wine glass and drank it while amusing himself.
“I like how he fights for his life. Unfortunately, he’s just food for this beast.” Captain Revie chugged his wine.
Jie fought with his life as he began to strike. He was thankful for this body since it possessed extraordinary strength. If it were his original body, his stamina would have already been drained.
“I will kill you!” Jie found another opening, and he hit the monster in between its necks. Then he jumped high, targeting each head’s eye.
The azugaur paused and stepped back. Jie saw it as an opportunity for another assault. But he was caught midair; the monster seemed to panic and hardly pushed him aside.
There was a loud thud when Jie’s back hit the cage. He grimaced in pain.
Damn it!
The crowd cheered in excitement, waiting for him to be devoured.
Jie’s determination to survive and save Nyssa made him do the impossible. He forced his body to its limit. If he couldn’t finish this beast now, he’d run out of strength and die.
After dodging the azugaur’s ambush, he found a chance to cling to one of its necks. Then he somersaulted in the air and landed smoothly on its back.
Jie wasted no time. He just followed his instincts. He swayed his two bamboo sticks until a cold swept through his palm. Then he jumped as high as he could and hit the azugaur’s weakness—the nerve in between its necks.
There was a sudden deafening silence when the monster fell, and its two heads were separated, and a pool of blood flowed into the fighting chamber.
“Izora, did you see that?” Kafle could not believe what his eyes saw.
“The impeding shackle glinted. How can he use magic despite the curse?” Izora stared at Ethros. “And it’s not just any magic."
“There’s no mistake; it’s a water manipulation!” Kafle had never been excited like this before. “Freedom is within our grasp!”
Jie stood up, sweating and drenched with the beast’s blood. It was not long before the crowd started murmuring. Even the announcer was too stunned to speak.
“That was an unexpected turn of events! What is your name, kid?” The announcer inquired when he had regained his composure.
“I am Ethros Aridame, and I will get out of this hell hole!” Jie gazed at everyone to convey that he meant everything he said.
“Ethros! Ethros! Ethros!” The spectators changed sides.
Captain Revie threw his wine glass, and it was shattered into pieces. “I never thought I’d be this entertained.” A smirk appeared on his face.
Kafle and Izora hurriedly ran to Ethros when he went out of the cage.
“I… won!” Jie smiled before he passed out.
MAGIC had taken a toll on Jie’s body. He’d been unconscious for two full days, which made Kafle worried.“Do you think his body can withstand it? I've been dying to ask him how he did that. Does that mean the shackle curse did not affect him?” Kafle kept walking back and forth near Jie while Izora pressed a small orb to Jie’s chest.“His heartbeat is stable now, unlike yesterday. But he can't be going on like this. Sooner or later, Revie will retake him to entertain themselves until this boy surrenders and dies.” Izora quickly grabbed the orb when she heard incoming footsteps. He sat beside Jie, whose body was shaking involuntarily while sweating hard.“He's in a convulsive state again.” He held Jie’s forehead. “His temperature is dropping.”Captain Revie showed up and followed two guards into their cell. They got in and checked on the three of them.“Is he dead?” Revie checked Jie’s face using his foot. “I guess he won't last another day. Too bad, I was impressed by how he defeated th
KING Malik scrutinized the elf child and the human young boy, who looked terribly sick. He couldn’t care less, even if he died. He never felt even the slightest pity for them. They were just lowly peasants.“What sorcery did you use to defeat my favorite executioner?” the king asked Izora. The young elf gazed up and met the eyes of the king, yet she didn't say a word. As if completely unconcerned by the king's royal presence, Izora sneered.King Malik raised his hand, and it landed on Izora’s cheek. “Insolence!”The young elf lost her footing and immediately got up, but Thora grabbed Izora’s hair.“How dare you look straight into the eyes of the king! Bow down!” The concubine forced the Izora to kneel. The king turned to Ethros. “Who is this useless brat? If he can't mine, just throw him up to the wasteland for the azugaurs to feast on!”Captain Revie crep
DAMIEN commanded his enormous falcon to land at a safe place on the outskirts of Ankhe City. It took him a while to reach Vatre because he had to take extra precautions. He made sure to arrive at the Nebe Festival while the aerial army patrolling the sky was smaller so he could sneak in. “These Vatreans are so careless as hell amid every festivity,” Damien said with a smug grin as he removed the green cloak covering his body. He pulled out a white handkerchief from his pocket and whispered a few spells to write a report about his arrival in the empire. “All right, Habicht, you can go now. Bring this to General Mord.” He tied the handkerchief in a knot on the side of the bird’s magic leash. Habicht squeaked before it flew back into the sky and disappeared. It was not long when four other men gathered, wearing the same green cloak with an embroidered crest on the chest. They were in the darkest part of an abandoned town near the border of Dezertus District. Damien breathed out. “
IN THE prison, Jie and Kafle pretended that their injuries were still fatal. Although their wounds had already healed, their bodies were still soaking up blood that had dried up. They quickly formulated a plan before Commander Revie reached their cell. The two were still lying on the cold surface.“Izora, no matter what happens, just stay behind me.” Kafle reminded her daughter. “It seemed they’re going to feed us their favorite beasts just like they always do.”Izora nodded. “Father, let me remind you that if you get severely injured again, I don’t have anything to help you unless I am free from the curse.”Kafle smiled. “I promise, I won’t. All we need is to get out of here. Thanks to the Pearl of Hanum, it regained my vitality.”“There are thousands of guards in this mine!” Izora protested.“We don’t need to neutralize them. A proper strategy is all we need.”Meanwhile, Jie didn’t know what to say because guilt had gathered inside his chest. It was his fault that these elves sacrif
THEY abandoned the ship on a nearby shore. The other prisoners who were with them took it to escape on their own after giving them a small boat to ride on.“Thanks, dark elf!” one of the prisoners waved at Kafle.Ethros was still unconscious that Kafle had to carry him. It was already past midnight, and Kafle circumnavigated to prevent the empire from finding them quickly.Kafle destroyed the signal orb inside the ship when they left the Dreqin Mines. A few Vatrean navy ships were patrolling; thankfully, they managed to cross the mainland safely. It was an arduous voyage.“This is Zummertien Village, just a few hours ride to Ankhe,” Kafle said upon recognizing the place. “We need a place to rest. They’ll surely find us soon.”“Yes, father!” Izora did not complain even though she was also exhausted. After Kafle left them to hide in a dark alley, he soon returned after finding a safe place to stay. It was a two-story inn located near the cliff.“His temperature kept rising.” Izora touch
THE headquarters of the Akatasuna Guild in Ankhe City was a vast estate. It was privately owned by the House of Vaughn, one of the powerful aristocrats in Vatre. The guild chamber was located underground because the place was always under the surveillance of the empire since they hated the insurgents’ guild.“Holy shit! You owned this estate?” Jie was too shocked to learn this. He was staring at the huge family portrait mounted on the great hall. It was Ryker along with his parents. “And you are the sole heir!”Ryker’s face darkened. “Nonsense! Continue walking.”“How come this place is not raided?” Jie asked after he finished his tour of the entire estate. Ryker was always with him to prevent him from escaping, which Jie had no plans of doing.Damien kept following them even though Ryker often showed disapproval of his presence, to which the former was unaffected. Jie was so
ANKHE City was so huge that Jie couldn’t check every place around the bottom layer within the day. They had to go back to Vaughn’s mansion since the charm was slowly wearing off.“I want to see the movement of people around here at night.” Jie insisted when Ryker was already mounted on his beast.“That's very risky. I should ask Winward to babysit you next time. I have a lot of important things to do, yet I am stuck here with you.” Ryker seemed filled with abhorrence.Jie exhaled sharply to control himself. Ryker’s tongue had always been sharp, and he better be careful not to trigger the assassin. What if Ryker suddenly decided to kill him?“Just teach me how to use the Imitation Charm, I can go on my own.” Jie pushed his luck to convince him.“No. Let's go home. You've already seen everything you need to see.”He jumped on his beast and followed Ryker. “Ho
THE force around the dungeon was so strong that even Ryker flew away. He had never imagined he’d seen Ethros this way. That he was capable of releasing this much energy without breaking his own body.“Calm down!” He tried to stop Ethros, but he could not go near him. It was the first time he witnessed such a kind of dark magic aside from their deputy chief. However, this one was raw and pure destruction.“If you don't control it, you'll annihilate the entire estate, and it will kill you!” Ryker kept warning, but Ethros seemed oblivious.“Snap out of it!” Ryker made several hand seals, creating a fire barrier to protect himself, when he realized that Ethros was already unstoppable. The dark clouds suddenly came to every orifice of Nahfu’s body. Then his flesh suddenly decayed until his skeleton remained. By the time the black smoke receded, the skeleton became brittle until it turned to ash.
CRISTON’S dumbfounded expression turned into awe as a series of flickering blue lightning countered the attackers. It was not long until it was revealed that a platoon of military elves consisting mainly of mages was positioned in proximity of the border for defense.“Indeed, the military might of the Southern Hanum is state of the art. Look at that? In just a blink, the aggressors retreated. That’s the famous Starlight Regiment, stationed on the borders. Their sole task is to kill all enemies on sight.” Xylas shook his head as he chuckled, and he added, “General Ibri is surely ruthless. Rumors had been circulating that he secretly trained private elite armies of mages defying the order of the late queen.”“That’s why Advani remained untouched. General Ibri is the head of the war council after all. The Supreme General of Hanum. We’re lucky; even though they vetted on us, General Mord did everything so we could have easy access in this territory.” Criston stared at the magnificent view
ON THE rocky shore of West Advani, Pearlie crawled with her severely injured body while carrying Nyssa on her back, while Damien remained unconscious near them. The huge waves had helped them reach the island. The dawn was breaking, but the sounds of the night insects could be heard around, along with the turbulent splash of the waves and lightning piercing from the sky.“We are safe now.” Her tears kept falling from her eyes and turned into pearls as she recalled Tiedus’ heroic sacrifice for everyone to reach the shore of Advani.“Captain, wake up. We’re here,” Pearlie whispered through her dried throat. She felt her body was on fire.Pearlie fought hard not to lose consciousness, knowing they might meet their demise with the wild animals around if no one could rescue them. Fortunately, as her vision started to get blurred, she witnessed two gigantic birds—a falcon and a raven hovering above them.“It’s them!” said the man riding the giant falcon. It was Criston holding his golden gr
AS TZEITEL scurried to return to her villa to check on Izvern, she was not expecting to see his brother waiting on the entrance without his usual two guards. Agni seemed agitated.“Brother, what are you doing here? I thought you left since I haven’t seen you in the banquet hall.” She turned to her ladies-in-waiting behind her, headed by Marina. “Leave us. I need some time alone with my seventh brother.”“Yes, Princess.” Marina stepped back before she turned along with the other four maids.“What are you up to?” Agni stared at her eyes as if he saw through there the dangerous things she did.Tzeitel looked down. “What do you mean? Come in. So many prying eyes around.”“Do you think I will not notice how restless the imperial armies are around the estate? I sneaked to the nearest military camp; everyone seemed to be in chaos searching for something. I know how schem
DESPITE the current predicament of the Elsher Estate losing their precious captive, the marriage alliance between Cariux and the third princess still pushed through. The noble feast was held a day before the wedding, and several members of the imperial family had come to Kaitseri, including King Malik.Princess Tzeitel pretended to warmly welcome her family. Her two older sisters came to her just to assert their dominance since, just like her, they were married off to the powerful families to support the empire.“I can’t believe our youngest legitimate sister is getting married now,” Princess Gweyr giggled. She was the first princess. She came along with their second sister, Princess Eletha. They were in the receiving hall, and all the ladies from aristocratic families had gathered there, and some of them showcased their music skills. The festive sounds reverberated around.Eletha playfully touched Tzeitel’s hair. &ld
SURV Elsher gathered all the members of the family in the private hall of his residence to discuss their current dilemma. His old face was fuming in anger and scolding everyone.“Father, calm down!” Lord Filus tried to pacify the Elsher patriarch. “It already happened. An ordinary person could not even set foot in this estate, let alone abduct our source of healing power.”“What are you trying to say, Filus? If you were not so lax around here, this would not have happened!” Surv pointed his finger to his eldest son. “If that creature managed to return to Hanum, how would we answer to the empire?”“We control a military might in the North, we have the strongest armies. Who would dare to provoke us? I heard the intruder used an advanced technique of portal magic. Only Iridessa is capable of doing it.” Lord Filus sounded calm.Surv gritted his teeth. “A mere rebel dared to trespa
TZEITEL observed the three of the Elsher siblings gathered in the courtyard of the main house, drinking in celebration for the upcoming wedding, which would be held in two days. Using her portal magic, she could hear their conversation from a distance. Hidden on the roof of her villa, she prepared to return to the forbidden dungeon.“How’s the feeling of tying the knot, little brother? I heard Grandfather punished you the other day for having a tryst with your lover. How brave you are to disobey our elders while you're with the third imperial princess!” Fenton laughed as he teased Cariux. He raised his wine glass and clicked it to Halix’s glass.Halix chuckled upon hearing the words of their oldest brother. “I can’t believe you’re this immature, brother. You're carrying this duty, a task specifically given to you. You can’t mess this up.”Cariux chugged his wine. “Am I not fulfilling my du
TIEDUS reinforced the water bubble while Pearlie tended to Damien, who was still unconscious. They were traveling southward, holding out not to use their last resort to swim, as it could easily lead to their demise. “Captain Winward will kill us if he finds out we left the lieutenant to die,” Pearlie’s body trembled, remembering Hisila’s sacrifice. “The dead will remain dead. Why would we drown ourselves in regret? It’s useless! This is war, Princess. Thousands of lives will be the collateral. And now we have no choice but to cross the Lightning Sea. Maybe it’ll be our turn to die next.”“I know,” Pearlie gazed down. “Perhaps I’m too young to understand these things.”“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you reach Advani safely.” Tiedus strengthened his resolve, knowing the very low probability of survival. Crossing the Lightning Sea was a suicide. The water bubble came to a halt for a moment as they witnessed the sudden change of turbulent rift in the water from a distance. The roar of thu
BAHARINI quickly checked Hisila’s pulse, praying that she could feel even a faint throb, but there was none. It was difficult for her to accept that the lieutenant had already passed away. Silently, she blamed herself for her immaturity; had she heeded Kafle's advice to avoid wasting time in the pit, she might have avoided capture. This tragedy may not have fallen on Hisila if they had followed their plan.“She’s gone,” Baharini’s voice cracked. “It's my fault.”Kafle did not say a word. He looked around to check if he could find Damien and the others, but they weren't there. “We need to keep going,” Kafle said as his face was void of expression. Baharini turned to wipe her tears. She gazed down at Ethros, who seemed frozen on the ground. “Can we give her a proper send-off?” The princess suggested. “I'm afraid we don't have time. Our enemies are approaching. I can't risk your life.” Kafle had to make a hard choice, knowing time was of the essence.Jie finally came to his senses. H
ISLAND OF ASTRAEAIRIDESSA kept pointing to the island of Kaitseri on the map as she conversed with her deputy chief inside the war room. They had just finished discussing war strategies with other officials a while ago since the grand fleet of the Empire initiated an attack on the West Astraean shore.“Aren’t you worried we might lose this main base?” Nacht mused. He crossed his arms as he studied the cold expression of the liberalist chief.“You’re not helping, Nacht.” Iridessa heaved a sigh.“Take it easy, Chief. We’ll find a way to save your adoptive daughter.” Nacht teased her again.Iridessa rolled his eyes. “Tzeitel can fend on her own. I’m just waiting for her report.”“Her wedding is approaching. With the Elshers keeping her hostage, how can we guarantee her safety?”Iridessa scoffed. “Worry about your kids, Nacht. If you are not too foo
