“What?” Kai turned to look at Sarah who was still sobbing uncontrollably. “I’m so sorry, Kai. My granddad found the test results on our bed. I wanted to surprise you at dinner later tonight.” Sarah apologized.
“Is that why you’re all ganging up on her? A married woman getting pregnant? Is that a crime?!” Kai demanded, getting up on his feet and aiding Sarah as well.
“I will not take questions from you despicable being!” Orion started.
“I gave you a roof over your head, despite being a nobody with no name. I endured the jabs from my business partners and associates, taunting me for giving up my only grandchild and future heir to a man with no past.”
“And how do you two ingrates repay me? You poison my line with pauper blood!” Orion turned to Sarah, “Sarah Pierce, you will sign these divorce papers this instant and I will consider letting you raise your bastard child in my home. Else, I want you two out of my sight.”
“Dad!” Stephanie yelled, he was being too harsh in her opinion.
“Shut up, Stephanie! Where were you and your equally stupid husband when Sarah ran off and court wedded this man?”
Silence.
“Sign these papers this instant, the both of you!” Orion demanded again and Kai stood holding Sarah in his arms. No matter the hardship he endured at their hands, he was okay because Sarah stood at his side.
A child was a blessing. They did not deserve to be treated so crudely because of a child coming out of a marriage.
“I’m not leaving my husband, grandfather! You can throw us out. I don’t care!” Sarah stood her ground and that same moment, her mother approached her, dragging her hair and pulling her away from Kai.
“Foolish child! How do you plan on raising a child with a man that can’t afford the city’s taxi?! Do the right thing! If you sign the papers, he will have no choice too and your grandfather will forgive you.”
“We’re not getting a divorce,” Kai announced. “Let us go, Sarah.” He added and Sarah released herself from her mother’s grip.
“Sarah Pierce!” Was the last thing the couple heard before they left the mansion.
They walked in silence until they got to the main gate and Kai muttered, “I’m sorry, Sarah,” in a very low tone.
“It’s okay. I’m sure-
“It’s not okay. Your parents gave us one rule to live with them. Do not get pregnant and that’s exactly what happened.”
“Kai? Kai, are you serious?” Sarah stopped walking.
“We’re a married couple. Married couples have children. It was cruel and unfair for them to give us such a rule in the first place.”
“We’re not in a position to call their rules unfair and cruel. They gave us a place to live, they provided for us when I couldn’t.”
Sarah scoffed, “what’s gotten into you? You sound just like my mother.”
‘Your mother was right. We’re in no situation to welcome a child into the world.”
“What?” Sarah asked, “so you’re saying this was a mistake. You rather I divorce you and live away from you or worse, you rather I not even be pregnant at all.”
Kai groaned, “you’re misunderstanding me. I’m happy, I am.” Kai paused. He noticed a bus stop bench and he took a seat, palming his face.
“Children are a blessing, I’m happy.” He said again, as though trying to convince himself.
“So what is the problem? I hated living with my family, you did too. We can start over.” Sarah said, taking a seat beside him.
“I don’t know who I am, Sarah.” He paused, “I have no past. I don’t even know my last name.”
“It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.” She assured him. “I’m scared.” He admitted out loud. Kai was somewhat okay with the never ending nightmares and migraines. He had learned to live with it while it was just him and Sarah but now the thought of having a child in the mix sent his heart into a frenzy.
“I don’t have a stable job yet.”
“I have some money saved up from the company.” Kai internally groaned. He was racking his brain thinking of something to say that would make Sarah return to her family’s home. He could live out in the streets but Sarah had done nothing wrong to deserve a husband like him.
Of all the times Kai felt useless, this was the height of it. He wrestled the thoughts of outright asking Sarah to return to her parents but he knew doing that would mean giving up his child as well. He couldn’t do that.
Sarah held his hands tightly, “you’re more fragile than I am, Kai. Do you really think there is anything in this world that would make me not choose you?” She asked, holding his hands.
Their moment was interrupted by painfully bright headlights. Sarah recognized that car anywhere. She got up immediately and the door opened, it was her mom.
“I am not divorcing Kai, mom. Forget about it. You did not have to drive all the way here.”
“All the way? It was barely a five minute drive. I guess it was longer for you two because you were on foot.” She spat and Sarah lowered her head. Kai didn't even bother getting up.
“I can’t believe this is my life.” She groaned. She threw Kai a sharp look but he was not even meeting her eyes.
Stephanie sighed before throwing a bunch of keys to Sarah. She caught them and raised her brow. Stephanie responded, “keys to my old college apartment. I always wondered why I never just stopped paying the mortgage. I guess it was for a time like this.” She said to Sarah.
Sarah was filled with confusion, “why are you helping us?” She asked.
“Us? I hope by us you mean you and my grandchild. If yes, then you have your answer.”
“And don’t think this means I’m now accepting of your marriage. I still want you to divorce that pauper and marry a well off man. If we’re fast enough, we could even trick him into thinking your child is his.” Stephanie paused, “but seeing how you’re convinced that you love a man who provides no security for you, I doubt that happening.”
“You can live in my old apartment. I will provide the necessities so you have a safe pregnancy.” Stephanie started, “but I don’t want Kai anywhere near the apartment.”
“What? Absolutely not!” Sarah said as she threw the keys hard on the ground.“That is my offer, Sarah Pierce. I only care about my future grandchild and I still very much want you to divorce Kai.”“That’s fine with me.” Kai pitched in, finally getting up from where he was sitting. Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes, “what?” She asked, her voice barely a whisper.“Glad to know that one of us has reasoning here. Do you need me to drive you or do you have a way to get there?” Stephanie asked Sarah and Kai responded, “I’ll take her.”“I won’t step foot in the apartment. I promise.” He added.“Your words mean shit but I will take it.” She then turned to Sarah, “I will pick you up tomorrow morning by ten for a doctor’s appointment.” Was the last thing she said before turning to enter her car and zooming off.Sarah stood, watching the car retreat until Kai’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts, “I spent nearly all the money I earned these past few months to book a restaurant for our anniversa
Kai had just dropped Sarah off at her apartment that morning, “you know you can come in right?” Sarah asked, “It’s not like there are spies watching.” She added, urging him to step into the apartment.Ever since she started living alone, Kai had adamantly refused to remotely step foot in the house. “I gave my word.” He always said and Sarah chuckled, “to who? My mom? Oh, come on, Kai. What is the matter with you?” She asked, placing a hand on his cheek.“Nothing.” He brushed her off, breaking her heart a little bit. Sarah noticed that he had been off for a while now. “Is it work?” She asked.“No.” Kai said, turning around to leave, “get some rest, Sarah.”“Is it the migraines?” Ignored. “The nightmares?” Ignored. As she watched her husband walk further away from her, she yelled, “Is it me?!”That would usually get him to turn around and reassure her but this time, he didn’t. He just yelled in response, “No!” Before taking a turn out of her line of vision.Sarah stifled a cry. He usual
The strange man called out to him, his cigarette falling from his hand. “It is you!” The heavily tattooed man fell to his knees, bowing his head. Kai rushed to him, “get up! Have you lost your mind?” He asked as he held him by his shoulders and pulled him up.Kai looked around frantically, hoping no one saw what just happened from their floor to ceiling windows, “I’m sorry, my Lord. I don’t know what came over me.”“I am not your Lord nor do I know who you are. Please remove yourself from my presence. The courier office does not open till ten and my manager will talk my ears off.” Kai said as he went pack to pick up the packages he abruptly dropped. The strange man was Maverick Slade, Kai’s captain and one of his closest aides. He held the position that was the lowest of the General’s officers but that was simply because he was low-born. His family had served the Rylans for centuries before they became the ruling house. The two men grew up together but Kai had no idea who the heavily
Kai looked out from the corner of his eye. It was Rosetta, Sarah’s self-proclaimed rival. Before she got to the table, Kai quickly threw Maverick a look, cautioning him and telling him to remain calm without words.“Wow! Look who the tide washed in! I didn’t think I’d get to see you in the capital anymore.” She started, dropping her designer bag on their table.“Good day to you too, Rosetta.” Kai said in a flat tone. He knew better than to indulge her. She got off by him simply engaging with her. To say she was obsessed was putting it mildly.Rosetta scoffed before continuing her failed attempt at taunting, “word on the street is that Sarah’s family finally got fed up with you two. Not only were you two freeloading but yo
The walk to Maverick’s car was long and frightening for Maverick but the usual for Kai. It felt good to finally do what his mind had been telling him to, with a twist of course. He had a strong feeling that Sarah would not take lightly to him beheading one of her acquaintances.“Would you like to come to my settlement? It’s small but it would be a better place to discuss than the public.” Kai broke the silence as they entered into the car. “Certainly. Just let me know where.”The two men arrived at Kai’s studio apartment after an almost thirty minute drive. Maverick took in the shabby building and could not shake off the awe of the state his general was living in. It was like the boonies in Nexarath. It was not suited for the commanding general of the strongest army the world had ever seen. It was not suitable for
Despite the urge to ask why, Maverick knew better than to question his general. Kai’s word was law, always.“Yes, my lord.” He said in response and Kai sighed, “I do not expect you to understand.” He said without divulging further information. Maverick was his closest friend but they did not have a vulnerable relationship. It was strange for him to suddenly confide in him about his marriage and life for the past three years.“I do.” Maverick said and Kai gave a light smile, “thank you, Captain.” He paused, “I will ask though, why are you in the capital? I don’t remember Morticia ever being able to successfully give you an order or send you on a mission.” Kai said to Maverick in a taunting tone. He remembered that he loved watching them bicker. Those were the fun moments.
Astrophel knocked loud and hard until his knuckles bruised. The door opened to reveal Orion, “what the hell are you doing here?” Orion asked Astrophel who pushed past him and made his way into the Pierce mansion.“Astrophel! What if my daughter and her husband were home?! We agreed to meet at our designated spot. To what do I owe this visit?” He asked again. Astrophel was now pacing back and forth in the living area.He stopped abruptly, “when were you going to tell me you threw him out?”“Kai? I had no way to reach you. You’re the one who insisted on being the one to contact me!”“Wrong answer, Orion! Let me rephrase, w
Astrophel shot Orion a look. He was whining and the sound of his voice and his complaining disgusted him, but he was right. They all could die. They all would die.Orion walked backwards until he plopped down on a seat, “I have to move.” He said as a matter of factly.“I have to move right this instant. Before his memories return.”“You move only when I give you permission to.” Astrophel said cooly, “You, Orion Pierce are one of the few allies left in the capital and besides, the whole continent is in turmoil.” He paused.“Unless you want to retreat to the dark continent, I’ll be glad to plan your voyage and send you off in grand style. It would make for meaningful research.&
