Four months ago, when Leonardo used to work at Kevin's company as a chauffeur, he had crashed the car of one of the company's board of directors when he was tasked with driving the man back to his hotel.
As expected, the man had burst into fury and demanded that Leonardo fix his car but Leonardo knew he would never be able to raise the huge amount needed to fix the car.
He was barely making ends meet with his meager pay. His pay was so little that he was certain he would have to save up all his salaries for an entire year before he would be able to fix the car.
Left with no other options, the company had to fire Leonardo as a way of taking responsibility for his action. But even after Leonardo was fired from the company, he was certain of one thing.
The car crash wasn't an accident. Someone had tampered with the car and orchestrated the accident to implicate him. But because he had no evidence whatsoever, he couldn't speak up about it and was forced to swallow his suspicions.
But today, he has confirmed his suspicions. It was Kevin who had planned the whole accident to implicate him and have him fired from the company.
Leonardo was right, after all. And to think that the culprit was no one else but his best friend who was also sleeping with his wife and got her pregnant behind his back!
“Tell me he is lying. Tell me you are not pregnant for him.” In his weak state, Leonardo shifted his eyes to Sophie and she stared back at him with barely any emotions in her eyes.
He wondered how he had managed to end up with a devil for a wife. What wrong did he ever do to deserve any of this?
Sophie rolled her eyes tiredly at him and picked at her fingernails. She seemed completely unbothered by the ruckus that she had caused.
“If you are going to ask me to get rid of the baby, just know I won't.” She answered. “I'm keeping the pregnancy.”
As she said those words, Leonardo's heart broke for the hundredth time like a fragile case, shattered by the words that he never imagined he would ever hear. Much worse, coming from a woman he had been married to for five years. A woman he loved with all of his heart.
“How could you do this to me, Sophie? How could you do this to me?”
Sophie laughed, her laughter carrying an air of mockery and sarcasm as she dressed before him in a big shirt.
“I cannot believe you still have the nerves to ask me such dumb question, Leonardo.” She walked towards her desk and pulled out a drawer, searching for something inside.
“You never held any meaning in my life, Leo. You never added anything valuable to my life. All you did was suck me dry and pretend to be a perfect husband.”
She picked some papers from the drawer and flung them at Leonardo and as his eyes scanned the typewritten content of the papers, his heart sank. They were divorce papers.
“Because I am a nice person, I am going to help you get out of your misery. Sign the divorce papers and be free from your pathetic state, Leo. Kevin and I plan to be wedded next month.”
Listening to Sophie say such horrible things made Leonardo feel like his whole world was being torn apart. Despair and anger warred inside of him and his nose flared as the feelings of anger won the war inside of him. He lifted his red, angry eyes to stare at Sophie again.
“You are the devil's spawn.”
She laughed again, evilly before walking towards Kevin. She placed her hand over his shoulder and kissed him on the lips before looking back at Leonardo again. There was a deep look of self satisfaction inside her eyes.
“I agree. Now, sign the paper, Leo, and be free from your misery.”
“Over my dead body!” Leonardo spat on the ground and raised himself back to his feet. He glared hatefully at Sophie. “I'll only agree to this divorce if I am dead!”
And so saying, Leonardo stormed out of the house, banging the door shut angrily behind him. As he descended down the staircase like a storm cloud, he passed Emma who looked surprised to see Leonardo in such an unusual state.
“Leo…” She tried to call out to him but he had already stormed away.
As soon as Leonardo walked out of the house and stomped towards his car, he noticed a black, expensive looking jeep parked close to his.
Confusion etched on his face and his brows furrowed together as he watched two men and a woman, clothed in dark suits alight from the car. They walked towards him and stopped directly in front of him.
“Leonardo Matteo, am I correct?” The woman stepped forward and extended a handshake to him. Leonardo accepted the handshake with skepticism and puzzlement.
Who were these people and why were they here? Who were they here to see and most importantly, how did they know his name?
“Y…yes.” He stuttered. “How may I help you?”
“My name is Gracie. I and my men are here for a purpose, Mr. Matteo, or should I say…Mr. Romano.”
“Mr. Romano?” Leonardo's frown deepened. “What do you mean by that?”
“What we are about to tell you might overwhelm you but that is exactly why we are here. To inform you about this. Your surname is not Matteo. Your surname is Romano. Rossi Romano was your father, may his soul rest in peace.”
Leonardo laughed a little ridiculously now, almost forgetting that he was angry just a few seconds ago.
“What are all these? Are you trying to pull a trick on me? Rossi Romano, the top business mogul in the country? Are you kidding me right now?”
“Fortunately, we are not trying to trick you, Mr. Romano.” The woman had a serious countenance on and it didn't look like she was trying to crack a joke, or anything of that sort.
“A month ago, your father died from a heart attack and two weeks later, his will was read and in that will, he left his company and eighty percent of his properties and assets under your care.”
She continued to explain. “You can come with us if you still have a hard time believing what I've just told you.”
Leonardo eyed them suspiciously. If they thought he was going to fall for their tricks, then they were dreaming.
“And why should I trust you? I've never even met any of you before. You could be kidnappers, for all I know. ”
A smirk played on the woman's lips this time around.
“Because, Mr. Romano, we have the key to turning your life overnight and making you one of the most prominent figures in the country.”
She took a step closer to him and stared at him, dead in the eye.
“So, what do you say, Mr. Romano? Are you coming with us or not?”
As the dark jeep drove through the driveway of a huge mansion, Leonardo was struck with awe at the sheer size and grandeur of the mansion. There were several cars parked out front, including a Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce and a Porsche. It was clear that this home of immense wealth and luxury was owned by no ordinary man but a multi millionaire. As Leonardo, the dark suited men and the woman alighted from the car, they were joined by a young lady who walked out of the mansion towards them. Her long strawberry blonde hair was curled and flipped to a shoulder and she was wearing an ankle length, silk dress. She had a beautiful smile on her face as she kept her eyes on Leonardo and unexpectedly wrapped her arms around him in a hug. Leonardo's body stiffened and his eyes darted from left to right, in his confused state. The young lady disentangled herself from him again, the smile on her face never unwavering even for a second. “Long time no see, lost brother.”A look of confusion fli
As soon as Leonardo returned back home, he headed straight for the bedroom. Once he reached the door of the bedroom, he pushed it open to see Sophie all dressed and reapplying her makeup, as if nothing ever transpired between them only a moment ago. When she turned her head to face him, Leonardo felt his stomach turn in disgust at her sight. She repelled him so much that he could throw up and he wondered how a woman could be this evil and dark hearted. It irked him to think that he had been married to this woman for five whole years and had endured all her mistreatments, all because of a love that was never there to begin with.“Knock before opening the door. How many times do I have to correct you?” She sighed in frustration and rolled her eyes at him. But Leonardo wasn't here for any of her drama. He was here for something else.“The divorce papers.” He spoke. “Where are the divorce papers?”Fine lines of wrinkles crossed Sophie's face at his question.“And what about them?”“Wher
The next day, Leonardo and Estella drove to the company in a dark BMW car. Once the car stopped, Leonardo felt a strong sense of nostalgia as his eyes took in the sight of the sleek and modern grandiose of the building. The memories of the time he used to come here with his parents filled his head and now, fifteen years later, he still appreciated the contemporary architecture of the company and the air of luxury and sophistication it exhibited. “Seems like you still remember what the company looks like.” Estella smiled at him, impressively. “A little.” He answered while clapping his hands together feeling a little odd from his dressing. “Are you sure about this?” Estella asked him, gesturing to his choice of clothes. At the same time, one of the security guards opened the car door, and Estella and Leonardo exited the car.“Yes, I prefer it this way for a start. You know,” Leonardo insisted on wearing casual clothes on the first day of resumption. He even noticed the disapproving
The security guards bowed to them as they walked into the company building. As they stepped into the large and vast entrance, they were greeted by the staff while they also whispered in awe behind their backs. “Oh my goodness, it's Jayden Romano.” “I thought he was dead.” “He grew up to be so good looking. Goodness!” “Where has he been all these years? I heard he went missing.” “There is a board meeting currently ongoing. We are late.” Estella informed Leonardo and they took the elevator to the top floor, where the meeting was being held. “Are you nervous?” She asked him as they disembarked from the elevator and walked down the hallway. “I mean, it's going to be your first board meeting. It's okay to be nervous.” “Surprisingly, I am not.” He replied to her. “I look forward to the board meeting.” As soon as they set foot into the board meeting, the once lively room suddenly fell silent for a few seconds and everyone in the room eyed Leonardo curiously. “Good day, ladies and
As Leonardo waited patiently in his car, parked in front of Ava's school, he glanced at his wristwatch again. He had been waiting for almost an hour but it was all worth it. He had been a little worried that Sophie might come to pick her up before he did and that was why he had arrived an hour earlier to fetch her himself. Even though it had only been a day, he had missed Ava dearly and couldn't wait to see her and hug her.Just then, he saw the sight of Emma and Ava walking out of the school premises. Leonardo's eyes gleamed with life again and he quickly exited his car and walked over to them. Ava's eyes sparkled upon seeing him and she ran to him, while he picked her up into his arms in a hug. “Dad!”“My princess.” He laughed and pecked her on the head. Then, he stared adorably at her face. She was the cutest thing that he had ever set eyes on and her bright face always made him forget his bad days whenever he looked at them.“Where did you go, daddy? I haven't seen you since ye
Once they were inside the house, Sophie led Leonardo up the staircase and into her room. She shut the door carefully behind them. “What do you want to talk about?” Leonardo asked, glancing at his wristwatch out of habit. He didn't want to be here. The memories of the last time he was in this room, prickled his skin and only made him angry. This was the same room where he was humiliated by a wife he thought was in love with him and a best friend he thought was loyal. “Are you in a hurry?” She batted her long lashes at him and a small flirty smile played on her lips. Leonardo looked away, ignoring her flirtatious acts and keeping his cold looks on. If she thought he was stupid enough to fall for her tricks, then she was dumb. He was no longer the weak and foolish Leonardo that she used to know. “Listen, Sophie. I am not here for long talks. I only agreed to come in and have a conversation with you because you begged me to. I have somewhere really important to be at.” “Somewher
The Next Day, Leonardo arrives at work before seven a.m. and some of the workers were busy pinching each other when they saw him. They didn't expect that he'd resume so early. After all, Antonio doesn't resume until nine a.m and sometimes depending on his mood, he doesn't resume until ten p.m.When he arrived, he met only the janitors and a few members of staff present. They were staring at him as if they had seen a ghost and he immediately understood what was going on. They weren't used to seeing the CEO resume early.A chorus of good morning filled the air and he waved at them in response. Not wanting to have any interaction with anyone at the moment. He entered the elevator and stopped at the tenth floor where his office was located. He checks his wrist watch at intervals and monitors the driver if he had taken Ava to school. He leafs through the accounts delivered the previous day and they seemed great. Sales were closed, goods were purchased. In all, they had a favorable day. H
Antonio strolls into the office a few hours later, and sees that the receptionist, Joyce, was busy typing, wondering what they were doing. "Hola, Joyce." He greets her jokingly. She was one of the girls that he had slept with to secure a job in the company."Good morning, sir." She replied harshly and he cocked his head sideways. That was new. He thought. "It's a good thing you're just coming in." She replied dryly. The shiteating grin slipped off from his face as he stared at the way her hands were flying on the keyboard. Never had he seen her this focused before so what changed. "Aren't you working too hard? Aiming for the staff of the year?" He teased trying to understand what was actually going on.Joyce's eyes snapped to him and stared at him with contempt in her eyes at his attempt of joking like his usual manner, "Maybe it's time to actually earn my keep. One thing it does is restores my respect." She flung at him.Antonio leaned over her desk, and peered into her computer to
