FIRST DAY AT DULUTH

“You can't believe who I saw! " Rodney said, his eyes wide open as if he had seen ghosts.

"Who?" a female voice asked lazily from the other end.

"I saw Donald, your ex. Did you happen to know that he is the son of the giant tycoon Albert Jeff"

“Hahaha...No way. You’re kidding me, he is just an average poor commoner" the female voice interrupted with laughter.

"No, Sandra. I’m serious. He is indeed from a rich home. His birthday is being celebrated in a grand style, and the creme de la creme of the society are all present..."

"What …. do you mean?" Sandra questioned, her voice shaking obviously. Was she having hearing problems at such a young age?

"You won’t believe it, he was announced to soon take over a very large consortium in this city! Didn’t you say he was so poor he couldn’t even afford to buy you a ring?" Rodney roared with suppressed anger, as he hung up on the phone.

He had ruined it all just because of a whore!

"Can this be true? Rodney is probably drunk," Sandra said to herself. She knew Rodney to always drink anytime he attended a party, and now she wasn't sure if he was drunk.

"But he didn't sound like he was drunk," Sandra thought to herself, however, she found it hard to believe all that Rodney just told her. She had known Donald for some years now, and she never saw any trace that he was rich, or he belonged to a rich family.

Jesus! How on earth could it be?

**********

The day after his birthday, Donald resumed at Duluth Associates. Most of the staff lined up to welcome him as he walked into the company with his father, Albert. Many greeted his father politely but subconciously ignored him.

They could tell that Donald was Albert's son through the striking resemblance, yet they believed that he only accompanied his father to the company; until his father introduced him to the staff as the new CEO.

"This is the new CEO of Duluth Associates, Mr Donald Jeff. For the time being, he is going to be working part-time in the company," Albert briefly announced before leaving.

Since Donald was yet to be done with schooling, he was going to be working at Duluth Associates on a part-time basis. He would be graduating from the University of Chesbil in two months, after which he would fully resume at the company.

Before Donald's arrival, someone had been acting as the CEO of Duluth Associates. But now that Donald had clocked the right age to take over, the person was removed elsewhere.

"Good day, Sir." a young man greeted Donald very cheerfully after he was introduced, offering to help him to carry his bag. It was obvious that he was assigned to assist Donald.

"Thank you," Donald responded, as the man collected his bag from him. As the two of them walked through the corridor leading to the CEO's office, Donald noticed a name tag on one of the doors which read:

"Hank Rodney Yales, COO of Duluth Associates."

"I can see that this is the COO's office. Is he around?" Donald asked his new assistant, but he wasn't sure either, so he knocked on the door.

"Come in. It's not locked," a male voice responded from inside. The assistant pushed open the door for Donald to walk in.

Upon seeing the familiar cheater, Donald couldn’t help but snort lightly. What a scene!

Rodney, on the other hand, quickly got to his feet and bowed his head. He was the Chief Operating Officer of Duluth Associates, and that meant he would now work under the control of the man he once humiliated.

How very embarrassing! How he wished he could travel back in time and smack his old self.

When he heard Donald was introduced as the new CEO of Duluth Associates at the birthday party the day before, he had prayed that the "Duluth Associates" referred to was not the headquarters, since there were three other branches of Duluth Associates in the city.

But now, it was glaring to Rodney that it was the headquarters of Duluth Associates that Donald would be working at.

'Hey rich guy, may I know how you got work here as a COO?"

Donald finally questioned, smiling warmly. But to Rodney, it was a devil’s cold smile.

"Emmm..." Rodney stammered and was not sure of what to say.

Rodney was 25 years old, and he had been working with Duluth Associates for the past four years. Before he got employed at Duluth Associates, he had had a tough time getting a job after his previous company went bankrupt.

He had applied to several companies, but his application was rejected because of his past record. When he applied to Duluth Associates, he was accepted without much stress of having to prove himself.

His dedication and hard work over the years caused him to be promoted. That was how he was able to rise to the level of being the COO at Duluth Associates.

Rodney never took his work at Duluth Associates for granted, because he saw the company as his saviour. Now that Donald was going to be his CEO, he felt like he had better resign from the company, but he decided to encourage himself to stay back.

Drops of sweat formed on his forehead as he bowed, but he dared not raise his hand to wipe them off. Just as he thought Donald would fire him there and then, to his surprise, the latter left, leaving only another slight snort behind.

And only then did Rodney dare to inhale deeply. So he wasn’t going to lose the job, right? Thank God!
