Jordan’s gaze had remained stuck on Ana’s face for a while without saying anything. For the short or long time that they had been together, he had not felt the urge to care for someone like he did that day. He sensed that Ana was in danger in the line of their mission. As he gazed at her, gauging her stubbornness, he did not want her to go through any kind of hurt again. He did not want to hurt her either. The mission was a dangerous one. He was sure they would meet more lunatics in the fight to attain the vengeance he was looking for, and Ana did not deserve to encounter any similar situation to what had just ended.

“You are just staring and not saying anything to me, Jordan. Answer me. Why don’t you want me to be a part of this?” Ana spoke again. She did know exactly why Jordan wanted her out of the mission. And she hated that he now saw her as a burden or as a weakling that he needed to watch over every time. That was why he was considering leaving her out of the mission because he

“You almost made me fall, you..." Mariela held her anger somewhere behind her throat before she could bark. She swallowed hard before speaking again. “You almost hurt me, Ana.” She said she was playing nice.“That would have been better to teach you some manners.” Ana snapped while Jordan watched them from behind.“What? Why would you say that to me? Do we have a problem here that I don’t know about? Have I wronged you in any way?” Mariela asked in a soft voice. She wondered whether they knew why she was sticking with them, although she was so certain that they had no way of finding out.“No, Mariela.” Ana said as she let go of the door, giving her a clear view of the inside. “The problem is that you chose to mannerlessly eavesdrop on our conversation instead of just simply knocking. We would have gladly welcomed you in and shared our conversation with you just like we welcomed you in this house and let you be a part of our life and the course we are fighting for, you know. We are now

  • THE RISE OF JORDAN RIVERS   SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Ana jerked herself up from the cold floor and sprung to her feet, gazing at the lady before her. She wanted to spit on her face or slap her across the face for scaring her like that, but she contained herself. The lady seemed more disconcertingly placid than usual. Her gaze conformed to that of a vicious person, too. She did not cooperate either. “Talk, huh? Was what you did to me just now the way to summon a person for a talk?” Ana asked as they racked before each other.“The other way would not have worked. Or do you want to lie to me and say that you would have willingly come if I called you? Or better still, would you have opened the door for me if I came to your room?” Mariela asked, shoving her hands in her pockets.Ana didn’t have to think about the damn questions. Mariela was right, after all. She would never have adhered to Mariela’s call or opened her door for her. Reason number one was simply because she hated the lady for trying to fool them, and there were some other reas

  • THE RISE OF JORDAN RIVERS   A NEW TACTIC

Ana stared at Mariela for a long moment as she well-tried assessing where the insults were coming from. Mariela had gotten the audacity to insult her like that. What she had done merited all those harsh insults. What freaking rights the lady had to throw such insults at her face without even minding anything! “Care to explain what you are ranting about? And it better not be by insults, because I will not take up even just one more insult from you, Maria.” Ana warned. She was so furious. The lady was crossing her limits. Insulting her was the last thing that Ana would tolerate.Mariela smirked. “Truth hurts, and that goes without saying. If I insult you again, what will you do, huh? You deserve worse than insults.” Mariela spit in Ana’s face.“I will break your bones, and you better trust me on that!” Ana said, her eyes denoting how much weight her words carried, and Mariela took that as a challenge.“Really? Show me what you have got!” She punched Ana in the face, and Ana staggered ba

“What I am trying to make you see is that Jordan is taking advantage of you, Ana.” Mariela spoke in a calm voice to try and trap her culprit. If the two started fighting, it would be so easy to finish them both. “Think about it, Ana. This man is getting richer and richer with every mission you people take. He is becoming invincible and insanely rich already, and you are not even halfway through your mission. By the time this ends, this man will be the richest tycoon in this country, Ana. What about you, Ana? What do you stand to gain after everything? No, wait. Let me rephrase my question. What have you gained after what you have done so far? I mean, except for these bruises on your face.” Mariela asked.Jordan listened closely, while Ana took some time to read Mariela’s mind. She knew the lady was up to something, and she wanted to hear what it was all about. “I think you are right, Mariela. I have the right to reap something from all this. I just hadn’t thought about it.” She said,

Jordan was lying with his back in his room when a slight knock came on the door. He stood up and went to get the door. His hopes crashed the minute he saw the face behind the door. His demons screamed inside, urging him to slam the door in her face. Or perhaps throttle her to death. But he composed himself and repelled all his calls from inside his head. All the same, he was taking too long to respond, so Mariela spoke first. “Hi, Jordan. Sorry for showing up at your door this late and unannounced too. I have some kind of emergency. May I come in?” Mariela asked.“It is late. I don’t think it is a good idea. Can’t it wait until tomorrow?” Jordan asked with neutrality.Torrow? Tomorrow would have been too late, according to her plan. She was cocksure that Ana would look for Jordan the moment she tapped her feet out of her room. That was why she had asked her to speak to Jordan in the morning and not right after their talk. She wanted to have some time that night to talk to Jordan as we

“Alright, boys! If we are on one page, you can take your posts around the compound and get ready for tomorrow. Bring the remainders to the house when you are done.” He said.“Yes, boss!” The major spoke as he called his men to stand around the armory table that was filled with high-quality firearms.Jordan then turned to Officer Adamson. “Thank you once again. I am impressed. They seem exactly like what I expected.” He said.“I am glad you like them. I do not doubt that they will be of great help to you on this mission.” The officer said“I feel the same.” Jordan said just at the same time Ana reached where they were. She took a good, satisfying moment to take in the new guests as they prepared the firearm

“Yeah. From ear to ear. What crossed your mind that took away that smile, huh?” She asked.Jordan had expected Ana to show up in her room that morning, but she did not. As they gazed at each other at that moment, he could not see a trace on her face that denoted that she had a problem to solve with him. She seemed normal. So okay. “Won’t you ask me to give you your share?” He finally broke the silence. She wiggled her head once. She seemed to be in the dark. “What? Share of what?” She quizzed.“I heard your conversation with Mariela last night. I expected you to budge in my room this morning and slap me with a thousand demands and threats. Or maybe a court order.” He added.Ana chuckled out so loudly and for a long moment that it left her tearing up. “And you seriously thought I meant all that bullshit? No wait, you actually thought I was that stupid to fall for that woman’s bullshit? Even if that was my plan, why in hell would I entrust my secrets to that crooked witch?” Ana asked. H

After a momentaneous moment that seemed too long for the pregnant souls to see who the guest really was, her face finally shone on them as she was ushered in by the major. Their jaws would have dropped to the floor after her face was revealed, but her condition was more appalling than anything else. Her eyes were double their usual size. They were red and sore, like she had wept nonstop for days. She looked messy, from her hair to her dirty clothes. She didn’t look like the woman they both knew.“I will go back to my post, boss. Please excuse me.” The major said this and excused himself.“Good morning, Jordan!” Diana spoke calmly.Jordan did not respond to her greetings. He instead turned to Mariela, who was keen on listening to what was being said. “Leave us!” Jordan spoke.“What? Why?” Mariela snapped. Any tiny bit of information and secrets were crucial to her, however minor they were. Jordan, however, gave her a look that made her realize just how out of place she was. She had no

“Names? What names, Jordan?” Mr. Elias asked in confusion.Jordan, with a steely gaze, had no time to waste. He needed to get to the heart of the issue as fast as he could. His voice was firm as he spoke. "The names of your supporters. The high-ranking officials who are protecting."The alliance members exchanged uneasy glances, a palpable scent of impending doom slapping at their nostrils. How could they comply with Jordan's request? Revealing the identities of those wielding formidable power felt like signing their own death warrants. And death was what they were trying to escape by all means. How could they negotiate for survival and sell themselves to the devil in the same way?“Jordan, please understand that we cannot do that. It is too dangerous for us. Besides, why do you want the names?” Mr. Elias replied, attempting to mask the tension in his voice.Jordan's eyes narrowed, his frustration bubbling beneath the surface. "Jordan, all I am suggesting is that we can settle this amicably. You don’t have to betray your noble parents by becoming a bloody murderer. Well, if it is revenge that you want, your parents are gone, and you can’t bring them back. Don’t even kill us. I have got something that will surely interest you."Jordan, unmoved, eyed Elias with a steely gaze, his expression portraying no
