ARTHUR REMAINED DUMBSTRUCK for almost 5 minutes. Then the house became stuffy and he hurried back inside to pack his things and leave immediately.
He saw Logan in the music room, gently playing a classical tune. He looked angelic. No one would know that behind that calm demeanor and blonde hair, the boy was a demon in disguise.
He entered his room, stuffed his few clothes into the room, and hurried out. He saw Clarence, still sulking in the sunroom. He ignored her and went out.
He stopped by his grandmother's grave first. He had not been here when she was buried because he could not stand the harsh and stony gaze of his family.
A gentle wind blew around, rustling the large oak tree and making some leaves fall gently around him.
He felt a strong choking emotion rush into him and found it hard to swallow the large lump in his throat. He knelt beside the headstone and rubbed it fondly.
"I don't know why you did what you did by willing majority of the properties to me, Grandma," He said softly. "But thank you." He closed his eyes and remained silent for a minute in respect. Then he stood up and, "And I will make a 4.9 GP at my graduation. I promise you." He bowed slightly and then walked out of the yard.
He didn't have any money for a taxi, so he walked. Occasionally, he would stick his hand out with a thumbs up, hoping someone would stop and give him a lift but so far, all the cars sped by without even slowing down.
After walking for almost 20 minutes, a rickety pickup truck passed by him. Slowed down and stopped. And then reversed. There was an old man in the driver's seat. "Where you headed?" The man asked.
"The airport," Arthur replied and leaned down and looked through the window.
"I'm not going to the airport," The old man said, "But I am headed that way. Hop in."
Arthur thankfully got into the car and they drove off.
The man dropped Arthur at quite a short distance from the airport's gate. It was only a 5-minute walk. He got then, paid for his return ticket, collected his gate pass, and went to the plane.
He was so downcast at how his family treated him that he wanted to call someone who could make him smile and laugh. And there was only one person like that. Sophia.
He took out his broken phone and tried calling, but it was not going through.
"Damned airport jammed all network connections," He muttered to himself. His flight was called and in a few minutes, they were airborne and heading back to New York City.
ARTHUR MANAGED TO take a small nap to clear his head on the flight back. He was awoken by the gentle bump of the plane's tires as it touched the runway's tarmac and taxied to a stop. A few minutes later, he was on his way to his girlfriend's apartment.
Just thinking of her made him smile.
The was dropped off a street away. After thanking the person who gave him a ride, he walked quickly into her street and down to her apartment.
He knocked on the door but there was no answer.
"That's strange," He muttered to himself. The windows were open which means that she was at home.
He knocked again. Louder this time and heard a yell from inside. "Leave at the doorstep," He heard her call.
He knocked adamantly.
He heard the grumbling of voices and the the door unlocked.
"Fucking pizza delivery –" Sophia started to say then she looked up and her face turned white. "Arthur! What are you doing here?"
Arthur was taken aback. For one, she was undressed with only a bathrobe on her.
"What am I doing here?" He echoed her question.
"I didn't expect you to be here so soon." She said, still not opening the door wide. She used her body to block the view.
"Are you not going to invite me in?" Arthur asked.
"What, Oh yeah. I mean, No. I am quite busy at the moment." Sophia said.
"You look pretty relaxed to me," Arthur said and pushed past her and into the house.
"Oh, you are the pizza boy, yeah?" A male voice asked, making Arthur turn in surprise. "She said you should leave it outside… or you want a tip?" Some dollar bills were flung on Arthur's face.
"I am not your pizza delivery boy!" Arthur said through clenched teeth.
The man reached for a towel and wrapped it around himself before he stepped out of the bed. He stood up and Arthur saw at once that this was a very rich man. He was tall and elegantly poised and he carried himself with the certainty of people that expected respect from everyone. "Oh, yeah. Who are you then?" The man asked.
"I am her boyfriend!" Arthur turned with tears in his eyes to stare at Sophia. "Is this what you do? This is what you repay me with? I leave town for a day and you've already gotten yourself another man?"
Sophia had a soft look on her face for a second, and suddenly, he changed and she chuckled, "You think this just started a day ago when you left?" She laughed again, "Who do you think got me this apartment? Definitely not you."
"Is this the guy you were telling me about just now?" The man asked.
Sophia nodded. "It is him."
"I thought you loved me," Arthur cried.
The other man smiled scornfully, "He's sweet, isn't he? Now I see why you were fond of him in the first place."
"Watch who you're talking to," Arthur yelled.
"No, Arthur," Sophia said, "It is you who should watch who you're talking to. This is Baron Williams. He ranks number 16 on Forbes's list of most richest men. With a snap of his finger, he can make a worthless person like you disappear." Sophia snapped her fingers to show him, "Nobody would ever hear about you again."
Sophia's words cut through Arthur's heart like a hot knife through butter. He closed his eyes, willing for tears not to drop.
"Sophia, you don't mean what you're saying…" Arthur said.
Sophia and Baron laughed. "What part?" Sophia asked, "The part that you are worthless? Or the part about making you disappear."
"Don't answer that," Baron said in a deep voice, "I just want you to get out. Leave this house now."
Arthur looked from Sophia to Barom and stumbled out. He could not believe that just when his life was about to get better, just when he had inherited wealth from his grandmother and he thought his life would only get better. Now, it was taking a nosedive again.
His life was plummeting back to zero.
He staggered along the road. Not knowing where he was going. He blindly took the gold necklace from his pocket and wore it around his neck as he forced the tears back.
His brain registered the fact that there was a black sedan, barreling towards him at almost 70 miles per hour. He saw it in slow motion but his legs and body refused to move as the car came at him head-on.
The impact was hard and painful for just a second and he was bodily flung into the air. He landed with a dull thud and a loud crack as his bones broke.
His eyes were still slightly open but blurry. He was losing it by the second, The last thing he saw before darkness enveloped him was the car that stopped and the driver stretched his neck out the window.
The driver looked out the window to check if Arthur was still breathing and alive. Satisfied with the result, he sped off, leaving a plume of smoke and the still body of Arthur Salvatore.
HIS EYES OPENED slowly. His vision was blurred as he tried to sit up but felt a sharp pain jolt on his side. He gasped and laid back down as a nurse hurried in. "Lay back down," she snapped. "Where am I?" Arthur asked, twisting his neck to look around. The nurse propped her hands on her supple hips and stared at Arthur, "You are in New City Hospital. A good Samaritan brought in your broken body." She picked up the chart beside his bed and looked at it, then she adjusted the drip that ran into the veins of his right hand.Arthur looked around. The monitor beside his bed was beeping at steady intervals. "What happened?" Arthur asked. The nurse scoffed and walked out without answering. She could not see any reason why she was assigned to look after the scrawny-looking young man. "Excuse me, miss," Arthur called to her just before she walked out. "Who brought me here?""You will know soon," the nurse snapped. "Now, go back to resting, and do not disturb me. I have much more important
ARTHUR TOOK AN uncertain step backward as he watched the gang approach. "What do you want?" He called out. The men sniggered as they walked forward. "Toss your wallet!" One of them said. Arthur raised his hand innocently and said, "I don't have a wallet, please." "That's too bad," One of the men said. Arthur looked left and right, and then he took off in unsteady steps. But he barely got 10 yards before he was pulled back and down. He covered his head with his hands as the heavy kicks hit his body from every angle. After what seemed like forever, the kicks stopped and the men walked away. Arthur felt like he was about to die. His breath was coming in wheezing sounds. He rolled over on the hard ground and stared at the dark skies. He could feel blood streaming from his mouth as he blacked out. "Oi, get up!" The toe of a boot poked Arthur's side. He coughed, gasped awake, and opened his eyes to see a cop standing over him. "You alright, there?" The cop asked.Arthur nodded, sa
[New Task>>> Put your ex-girlfriend in her place] Arthur's brows furrowed together. "Ex girlfriend? I dated her?" He asked himself. He muttered under his breath as he turned around to look at Sophia. "I'm not sure I should waste my energy on… that," He started to walk away and ignore the system's task. [Reward >>> an amount of your memory will be regained. Additional 10,000 USD and increase in ego. Punishment >>> Compatibility with the system will be reduced by 5 percent. Remember, if the system Compatibility reduces by less than 35 percent, it will cause a slow and painful death.]The cold robotic voice in Arthur's head made him shiver with fright. A slow and painful death. Goosebumps. "And what are you standing there ogling at me?" Sophie's voice snapped him back to reality. Arthur shook his head. "You're not worth my time." That took Sophie by surprise. She gasped. "What?!" "I said you're not worth my time. That's what I said," Arthur said lazily. Sophie looked like she
[New Task][Get a job as a taxi driver. Deadline in 24 hours]Arthur blinked unbelieving. "What?" He asked. "You are to get yourself a job as a taxi driver until further notice," The system voice replied. "Shit!" Arthur cursed under his breath. "I thought I would not have to work again for the rest of my life and only spend all the money from the system." "The deadline to get the job is tomorrow morning," The system interrupted his thoughts. "Failure to do so is disastrous.""Let me guess," Arthur said dryly, "A slow and painful death." He groaned as he stood up. "Where can I get a taxi to buy? Or even rent?" He asked himself as he made his way into the commercial district of the city. His stomach gave a small grumble so he obeyed and entered the first restaurant he came across. It was a very fancy and high-end restaurant. Large glass chandeliers were hanging from the ceiling and from the looks and muted sounds from everyone there, he could tell that these were all rich billionai
"I'M GOING TO the hospital," A tall thin man in an oversized suit said, getting into the taxi. Arthur started the engine and drove on. He had been doing this for over a week now and even as he didn't expect to like it, he found himself waking up every morning looking forward to the type of people he was going to meet that day. He had found a small apartment on the outskirts of downtown. It was a shabby building, but he had nice neighbors and a place to sleep. He had also bought some casual clothes, not as expensive as the first set he had bought, but they were not cheap either. Oftentimes, he caught himself thinking of his late friend, William, but he snapped himself out of getting sad, and for that reason, he was glad to have a job as tasking and busy as a taxi driver. It kept his mind from thinking of the past and trying to regain his memory. "Would you like some music, sir?" Arthur asked his passenger. The man shook his head. "I would prefer the silence." Arthur nodded. He k
THE MEMORIES CAME in short flashes. It felt like Arthur was in a theater with flicking scenes. He saw an old woman with white hair. She was holding the gold necklace that he had around his neck now. "Grandmother?" He muttered to himself. The images kept flashing in his head. The memories kept on filling the blank spots in his head. After almost 30 minutes, the images stopped rolling. "60 percent of your memories have been restored," The system told him. Arthur released a long breath and nodded to himself. Sure enough, he remembered almost everything. He remembered his father, stepmother, and step-brothers. What he could not fathom was why they had not reached out to him. From the newly gained memories, he could tell that they did not like him so much, but after no contact for over 5 months, they should have tried to find him. Maybe he should find them, he thought to himself. "Not yet," The system replied. "Soon, it will be a task for you. But not now." "You don't get to co
"Little brother?" Arthur asked. "Do I know you?" "Stop the joke, Arthur," The man said. "Look, It's me, Liam. Your stepbrother. Here," He took off his face cap and dark shades. Arthur looked at him again, he was still having some difficulty piecing together some of his memories. It was still all a bunch of garbage in his head. Then slowly, it started stringing together. "Liam? Liam!" He remembered. Liam was the son of his stepmother before she married his father and he had not been really wicked or evil to Arthur all those years ago, but neither had he been exceptionally friendly. So Arthur was confused as to why he was there. "I didn't know what to think when you disappeared all those months ago," Liam said. "Mother wouldn't say anything. Your father, Edward too refused to comment. We all just assumed that you were missing, or worst-case scenario, dead. Where were you?" Arthur shrugged. "I've been… huh, alive. As you can see." Arthur shrugged out of his coat and dumped it on the
ARTHUR GROANED AND opened another can of beer. "A job at a nightclub…" He muttered to himself as he raised the beer to his mouth. Then he shrugged and sat down, after all, The system did not specify if he had a deadline or not. He thought that he could chill for as long as he wanted. But just as he prepared to close his eyes and sleep on the couch, his mind kept on wandering about what his stepbrother had just told him. The major part of his day had been spent being punished for a crime he did not do because he was a 'nobody'. He groaned again, stood up, and put on his coat. He decided that there was no way that he was going to spend the night drinking beer and sleeping, so he took one glance at his living room before walking out. As he walked along the street which was still very busy, he put his hoodie up because it was a cold night. Bright neon lights flashed and caught his attention as he walked past. He hummed to himself as he walked lightly, making sure not to brush past any
