The cavern didn’t stop shaking. In fact, it felt like the world itself was gearing up to collapse. Trevor adjusted his grip on his sword, glancing between the massive, dark-armored Warden and Lyra, who stood ready with her glowing staff.

“Any last-minute strategies?” Trevor asked, trying to mask the crack in his voice.

“Don’t die,” Lyra replied flatly.

“Great plan, love it. Let’s aim for bonus points and actually win too.”

The Warden’s fiery eyes locked onto them as it raised its colossal blade. “Surrender the fragment, or be destroyed.”

Trevor pointed at the glowing box in his hand. “Oh, this? You want this? Sorry, but I’ve kind of bonded with it. You know, emotionally. Can’t just give it away now.”

The Warden wasn’t amused. It let out a guttural roar and charged, moving faster than anything its size had any right to.

“Here it comes!” Lyra yelled.

Trevor barely had time to dive out of the way before the ground where he’d been standing exploded in a shower of rock and debris.

“Okay,”

The silence in the cavern didn’t last long. As Trevor, Lyra, and the robed man moved deeper into the twisting tunnels, the faint hum of energy from the sealed Rift lingered like an echo. Trevor couldn’t resist filling the quiet with his favorite hobby: complaining.“So let me get this straight,” he said, gesturing wildly with his free hand. “We’ve fought shadows, big angry giants, and almost got crushed by a cave-in... and now we’re just marching into another disaster?”The robed man didn’t even glance back. “Yes.”“Great. Love the enthusiasm.” Trevor turned to Lyra. “How do you put up with this guy?”Lyra smirked, still scanning their surroundings with her glowing staff. “He doesn’t talk much. That’s a big improvement over you.”“Rude.”The robed man stopped suddenly, his staff emitting a faint pulse. He turned to face them, his hood concealing most of his face. “Ahead lies the Gauntlet. It is a trial designed to test those who seek the Nexus’s heart.”Trevor frowned. “Trial? Like, p

Trevor trudged behind the robed man, his boots scraping against the worn stone floor. The dim tunnel stretched endlessly ahead, lit only by the faint glow of Lyra’s staff.“Just a thought,” Trevor said, his voice echoing off the walls, “but maybe the next trial could involve a comfy chair and some sandwiches? You know, really test our ability to... relax.”The robed man ignored him.“Take that as a no,” Lyra muttered, rolling her eyes. The tunnel widened into a massive chamber. Unlike the previous one, this room was alive with movement. Rivers of molten lava crisscrossed the floor, casting eerie red light on the walls. Floating platforms bobbed and swayed above the fiery abyss.Trevor let out a low whistle. “Well, this screams fun. Who wants to bet the platforms sink if we step on them?”“They probably do,” Lyra said grimly.“Perfect. I love a good game of ‘The Floor is Actual Lava.’”The robed man stepped aside, gesturing toward the platforms. “The next trial will test your endurance

The stairs spiraled downward, the air growing colder with each step. Trevor shivered, rubbing his arms. “I’m calling it now—next trial involves frostbite. Or, you know, something equally awful.”Lyra ignored him, her staff casting soft light ahead. “Would you stop whining for five minutes? You’ve survived worse.”“Yeah, barely,” Trevor muttered. The robed man, ever silent, led them into a new chamber. This one was nothing like the others. It was eerily quiet, the walls lined with mirrors that stretched up into darkness. A faint mist clung to the ground, swirling around their feet.Trevor glanced around, his unease growing. “Okay, not to be that guy, but this feels... wrong.”Lyra nodded, her grip on her staff tightening. “It’s too quiet.”The robed man turned to them. “This is the Trial of Reflection. Your greatest fears, regrets, and doubts will manifest here. You must confront them to proceed.”Trevor’s face fell. “Oh, good. Therapy, but make it deadly. My favorite.”Before Lyra cou

Trevor groaned, rolling onto his side. His sword clattered nearby, and he grabbed it, scrambling to his feet. Above him, the ceiling had sealed itself, cutting off any sign of Lyra or the robed man.“Well, this is new,” Trevor muttered, glancing around. The chamber was vast and eerily silent, illuminated by a faint blue light emanating from the walls.A voice broke the stillness, deep and disembodied. “Separated by the tides of fate. Only those who prove their strength can reunite.”“Great,” Trevor said, gripping his sword. “Another cryptic trial. Why can’t these just be quizzes? I’m great at guessing.”As if in answer, the ground ahead of

The portal spat them out into a new chamber—a quiet one for a change. The air was warm, the walls lined with softly glowing crystals. For the first time in what felt like hours, nothing was trying to kill them.Trevor collapsed onto the floor, his sword clattering beside him. “Okay, I’m officially done. Someone else can save the world. I’m retiring.”Lyra smirked, leaning against her staff as she sat next to him. “You don’t retire from being chosen. That’s kind of the whole point of being chosen.”Trevor sighed dramatically. “Great. So I’m stuck here forever. Guess I better start carving my initials into the wall.”They sat in silence for a moment, catching their breath. Then Lyra glanced at him. “Do you ever think about... home?”Trevor blinked, then gave her a sideways look. “Home? Like, the good old ‘normal world’ where we weren’t constantly dodging death? Yeah, I think about it. All the time.”“What did you do?” Lyra asked, her tone curious. “Before all of this?”Trevor hesitated,

The calm didn’t last long.Trevor and Lyra barely had time to catch their breath before the chamber began to shift. The glowing crystals dimmed, replaced by jagged, dark spikes that sprouted from the walls. The warmth in the air vanished, replaced by an icy chill.“Why can’t we ever get five minutes of peace?” Trevor groaned, grabbing his sword.Lyra stood, her staff glowing faintly. “Because this place hates us. Obviously.”A low rumble echoed through the chamber, and the floor beneath them cracked. Trevor and Lyra jumped apart just as a massive rift split the ground between them.“Okay, seriously?!” Trevor shouted. The rift widened, and before either of them could react, the floor under Trevor gave way completely. Whatever made that noise will be here soon."They started walking along the rocky ledge, the faint glow of Lyra’s staff lighting their way. The air was damp and cold, and every sound seemed to echo endlessly."Do you think there’s even a way out of this place?" Trevor asked after a while."There has to be," Lyra replied. "We’ve made it this far, haven’t we?"Trevor gave her a weak smile. "Yeah, but I’m starting to think this system world just enjoys messing with us. Like, ‘Oh, you survived monsters? We don’t have much of a choice. If we don’t finish this, everything we’ve fought for will be destroyed. The system wasn’t lying.”“Yeah, thanks for the pep talk,” Trevor said sarcastically, rolling his eyes. “Really feeling the ‘we-can-do-it’ energy right now.”Lyra frowned but didn’t respond.
