Chapter 83

Nathan darted his gaze from his father to the crowd. While cheers and applause reigned, he was drowning in the pool of confusion. He rolled his eyes around the large living room that could pass for a party hall.

“Alex, come closer!” his father implored.

The confused Nathan remained transfixed in his spot. He turned to his mother and got a reassuring blink. He reluctantly moved closer to his father.

One of the bartenders walked up to the family with a square tray harboring three glasses of red wine.

Mr. Smith took a glass so did his wife. The waitress strode toward Nathan with the tray. He turned to his mother and again Nathan received another blink from his mom which says Everything is fine.

He took the glass.

Lifting the glass to his face, Mr. Smith said. “To Alex!”

“To Alex!” The crowd cheered and soon, the applause was echoing through every corner of the room.

Mike led the journalists out of the room.
