CHAPTER TWO

Die? Was someone threatening her life? He wondered in fear. "What do you mean?"

Darcy was back to her normal self as she started yelling. "Just sign the damn papers, you bastard! She deserves a better husband than you and you know it!"

Her words jabbed directly through his heart. The painful thing was that she was right. And he knew it in his heart of hearts. Madison deserved someone better than him.

"I've heard you!" He said through gritted teeth as he went out the door.

Five years of their marriage was going down the drain, he thought, panic shooting through him as he drove down to his office. He couldn't believe that Madison would suddenly want out. It simply wasn't possible, especially with the fact that they'd still shared the same bed up till this morning.

His mind was a jumble of thoughts and emotions. He trying to figure out what had gone wrong. Somehow, he knew it had to do with Darcy. She'd always been cold and unsupportive of their marriage all these years.

What would he do without Madison, now? How would he go on? She had been his only support system all these years. Now, he was going to be all alone. His mind trailed to his son. How was he going to feel when he hears that his parents were getting divorced. He would be so heartbroken.

He just couldn't imagine fighting Madison over custody of Jackson. No! He refused to believe all of these were real. It was a joke. Probably part of her birthday surprise. He looked down at the divorce papers, sitting in the passenger seat next to him, and then his eyes drifted back to the road.

That was when he saw it dimly out of the corner of his eyes. A truck was driving from his left at a maddening speed. Panic settled in his heart as he tried to swerve to the right at the intersection, but it was too late.

The sound of the impact was deafening, and he squeezed his eyes shut as his world went black. He soon peeled his eyes open, surprised he was still alive. He looked down at his body and realized he wasn't hurt at all. Not even a scratch, just a slight ache to his sides.

He squeezed himself out of the door, shocking the people who had watched the scene. He looked at his car and realized that he had been so lucky to survive the crash.

"Wow! He doesn't even have a single scratch on his body!" The people whispered in astonishment.

He ignored them and flagged down a cab. He had to get to his office real quick. A few minutes later, he was sitting at his desk when a figure appeared at his doorway.

"Where the hell have you been, Jake?" Mr. Davis demanded, his face red with anger. "I've  had to cover for you all day!"

Jake was taken aback by his boss's tone. He rarely yelled at staff. "I'm sorry, sir," he said, his voice shaking.

"You're always so sorry. But not this time around, you lazy slacker!!!"

Lazy? Slacker? Jake's head reeled from trying to understand what Mr Davis was on about. This was the first time in years he had actually gone late for work. So what was he talking about? He opened his mouth just to say that when Mr Davis cut him off.

"You're nothing but a useless ass licker. You're fired!" Mr Davis glared at him with an intense fierceness.
