“Mother,” Sophia frowned. Her mother rarely made such a scene without any backing.

“Sophia,” a male voice called.

Marco appeared from Florence’s behind.

“I believe Alex has his reasons when it comes to Kelly. Don’t doubt him. It’s not good for a husband and wife to lose trust in each other,” Marco said, attempting to seem like the perfect gentleman before Sophia.

“Marco,” Florence sneered, “don’t lump all men in with you. You’re too kind and good to be called a man. This loser? He’s a scammer—willing to be any woman’s lapdog for a penny.”

“Aunt Florence, I believe Alex is noble and honorable,” Marco insisted, his tone steady.

Florence scoffed bitterly. “Noble? Honorable? If he’s noble, then who in the world is the real scammer? Sophia, why are you still keeping this man? He’s cheated on you! You should kick him out!”

Sophia’s gaze flitted nervously around the room, her heart in turmoil.

Doubt clouded her mind.

“You’re always like this—always doubting everything! Doubt is an illness th

“All he knows is violence, that filthy bastard!”Sophia paused, caught off guard. Alex was usually calm and controlled, but maybe her mother was right—maybe he was jealous now that Marco was around. So he really does love me, she thought, feeling her cheeks grow warm.“Why are you just standing there?” Florence snapped. “Aren’t you going to do something?”Right then, several security guards appeared, seizing Florence and Jack with hostile expressions.“Wait!” Marco stepped forward and held out a hand. “What do you think you’re doing?”“They insulted Miss Jasmine Kingston’s guests—accused them of being thieves—and deserve to be punished,” one guard spat.“Hold on.” Marco discreetly pressed some cash into the head guard’s hand.“I know Jasmine Kingston personally. I’ll make sure she hears how well you handled this. I’m sure she’ll let the insult slide. All right?”The head guard eyed the money—equal to a couple of months’ salary—and broke into a smile.“If you say so, sir. Just keep tho

She shook her head, took a slow breath. “No. It’s done. I won’t waste more time on him.”“But—”“That’s enough,” she said, cutting him off. “We need to focus on what really matters—I don’t want any trouble that could make Jasmine back out. He is too close to Kingston right now.”Reluctantly, Marco nodded.Meanwhile, Alex arrived at Vancouver’s premier hospital.Jasmine led him down a corridor into a VVIP suite, where an elderly woman—Elizabeth Kingston, Jasmine’s grandmother—lay pale and frail in a bed.Her skin looked paper-thin, her lips were cracked, and her breathing was shallow. Several doctors stood nearby, looking grim.“Jasmine, where have you been?” a man’s voice demanded.Charles, Jasmine’s older brother, glared as soon as she walked in. “Grandma could be breathing her last, and you’re off who-knows-where?”“Are you saying Grandma can’t be saved anymore, just because you believe there’s no hope?” Jasmine snapped back.“I’m just telling the truth,” Charles retorted. “She’s in

Alex rose to his feet, concern flickering in his gaze.“All right, I’ll take my leave now. Elizabeth, you need rest.”Jasmine stood up as well. “I’ll see you out,” she said, then turned to the old woman. “Nana, please don’t worry about Charles. You should rest, too.”Elizabeth closed her eyes, heaving a tired sigh.“You’re right, child. It’s not like I don’t know his temper after all these years. Maybe it’s my fault for spoiling him too much.”Meanwhile, in another hospital room down the hallway, a similar scene was unraveling—albeit with far more chaos.Jack, every inch of him in bandages, lay moaning on his hospital bed.Thick plaster casts wrapped around both legs, and his head was swathed so tightly that only his nose and mouth showed. His eyes burned with anger.“Mom! Four black vans thundered onto the street like a posse riding in at high noon. They skidded to a stop, pinning Jasmine’s limousine from the front and rear.About twenty men poured out, each one armed to the teeth and hiding behind masks. Their leader—burly, tatted up, and mean as a rattlesnake—stepped right up to the window, pounding on the glass with his fist. “Both of you get out, or we’ll blow this tin can to pieces!” he snarled. Inside the limo, Jasmine’s face went pale. The driver looked just as rattled. “Driver,” came Alex’s calm voice. “Y-yes?” the driver stammered, too stunned to keep his voice steady. “I hear this car’s sound system can rattle bones. Mind turnin’ it up to full blast?” Alex leaned back, eyes half-lidded like he hadn’t a care in the world. The driver blinked. “What?” ‘Is this fella crazy?’ he thought. ‘Bullets are spraying outside, and he wants music?’“Classical, if you’ve got it,” Alex added, letting his eyes fall closed. Jasmine watched him, her own

Suddenly, there was only silence in the car.The four black vans had already driven away in a hurry, leaving their friends' bodies sprawled on the asphalt. The surrounding cars, whose drivers had witnessed the scene, stayed far away, unwilling to get involved."Hey, driver," Alex called out. "Don’t you think it’s time to move out? What are you waiting for?"The driver, who had been enjoying the music accompanying his journey to the afterlife, slowly opened his eyes and glanced around.A jolt of shock ran through him. The obstruction that had once blocked his path was gone."Yes, yes, Sir."He hastily pushed the pedal, and as the car started moving, it bumped slightly—rolling over the bodies on the road.Jasmine stared out of the window, her eyes lost in the blue sky and the rows of passing houses."Don’t you want to ask who they were?" Alex asked, breaking the heavy silence."Not really," Jasmine replied, her voice soft but dismissive."They’re like cockroaches—keep coming after me. H

You, a pathetic excuse for a doctor, couldn’t appreciate its worth even if it bit you in the ass!"Smugly, Owen slapped the box with contemptuous triumph.“Uncle Jericho’s already handed this over to me. It’s mine now, doctor boy.”Instead of exploding into fury, Alex’s lips twisted into a chilling, knife-edged smile directed straight at Jericho Kane.“Fool me once—shame on you. Twice—shame on me. But thrice? Then I'm the goddamn fool.”He strode past Jericho, leaning in close enough to whisper venomous words straight into his trembling ear.“If that Heaven Root isn't in my hand before I leave this cursed mansion, don't blame me when your bloodline ends thr
