The King of War returns

The wind whistled, causing Elijah Silva to pull his coat together while taking a final look at the campground he had long gotten used to, as well as the familiar faces that accompanied it.

He clenched his jaw tightly at the sight.

Even as they were all comrades, they knew that there was a significant difference between them and Elijah.

Taking a deep breath, Elijah intoned. “Let's go.”

He turned around and stepped onto the hatch door of the helicopter that was waiting at the side for him to board.

Behind this young man, who looked no older than thirty-two, were several teams of tall, toned, and muscular men standing uniformly in nearby rows.

Despite being on the verge of tears, they were standing still with their backs straight, raising their hands in unison to perform a standard and reverent military salute.

It was full of enthusiasm and pride.

A melancholic smile adorned Elijah's lips as he watched this, unsure of how to respond.

To think that there would be a day like this.

“Captain, there's no reason for you to return to that place that rejected you,” Thomas muttered with reluctance as he wiped the tears in his eyes.

Elijah nodded. “I have a responsibility there as well, Thomas. I will return someday, but now, I must head back to resolve the demons of my past.”

“I understand. It's just… it would be difficult without you here.”

“I'm sure you guys will manage, after all, you are my subordinates.”

Hearing those words helped to soothe Thomas' aching heart as he closed the helicopter’s hatch door.

The helicopter quickly ascended, causing the familiar campground and teams to gradually turn into tiny marks on the ground.

Elijah let out a sigh as he intoned. “Everything surely has an end. There's no longer a need for me to run away from my past by staying here.”

Thomas didn't respond, instead maintaining silence as he reminisced on the past with Elijah.

To think that Elijah had been at the border for ten whole years.

He joined when he was only twenty-two, serving as a fresh recruit only to be quickly promoted to a general who held great authority after various close shaves with death on the battlefield.

His greatest feat remained when he had challenged an elite army of thirty thousand men single-handedly.

He had gone on a solo mission, infiltrating the enemy camp and capturing their general alive, which had earned him his rank of a four-star general.

He was the legendary King of War of the Northern border who had led the invincible DragonTooth Regiment, firmly guarding the Northern border against the enemies that sought to destroy the nation.

He was the God of Slaughter, a name that struck fear into his enemies, and most of all, he was the youngest war god that Avalon had ever seen, chosen by the International Organization of War due to his excellent combat power and command ability.

Due to his efforts, the Northern border would never have to face the risk of being attacked due to how well-fortified it was.

Having achieved such earth-shattering success, Elijah decided it was finally time to retire, even though he was merely thirty-two years old because he had debts to repay and revenge to take.

The helicopter flew south toward the nearest airport, and in the meantime, Elijah took out an ancient looking necklace with an emerald pendant from his chest.

It was the last thing his mother gave him before she passed and the reason he was able to attain his current position as War God.

He could still recall the scene when he was engaged in his first battle and sacrificed himself to save his fellow comrades.

It was in that moment that he awakened the Battle God System that enabled him to possess powers beyond what was humanly possible, setting him on the cultivation path.

And to think that this was a gift from his mother.

Ever since he awakened the system, he had always wondered where his mother had got her hands on such an artifact and if perhaps it was the reason she was hated by her siblings.

In any case, it was one of the reasons he was returning home, to find out the truth.

The other reason was related to someone else, a beautiful woman that had stolen his heart ten years ago.

At that time, Alice Wesen, who had just graduated college, had already taken over her family's business as CEO, with her prospects of taking it to greater heights being high due to her outstanding business acumen.

To everyone, she was the most gorgeous and famous female CEO, with several rich bachelors at that time competing for her attention.

Unfortunately, an accident happened, causing Wesen Corporation headquarters to be engulfed in flames.

Elijah would have nearly died if not for Alice who stepped into the flames and saved him, at the cost of being disfigured as a result.

In the end, Elijah was forced to run away because Alice's family wished for nothing more than for him to disappear.

Elijah always blamed himself for what happened to Alice and swore that if he ever got the chance, he would repay her for everything, ensuring that she would get the world just like she deserved.

Ten years had passed and finally, Elijah had returned from the battlefield as a successful man, ready to fulfill his promise to Alice.
