Chapter 11

Ivan landed on the floor with a thud, but he quickly stood up.

He was embarrassed, but he refused to show it. He was not ready to show how weak he was.

He moved towards Gerald again and tried to punch him, but Gerald overpowered him and kicked him in the chin, and he fell down on the floor again.

He could not believe that Gerald was stronger than him.

"How come? How come you are stronger than me? I am the disciple of a master." Ivan said to Gerald.

Gerald ignored Evan's question and looked at him contemptuously. He walked towards him to where he was and stepped on his chest.

"Now, you must apologize. Who is useless? Who is the useless one among the both of us?" Gerald asked him.

Ivan refused to back down, he refused to accept defeat, and instead he continued to threaten Gerald.

"You don't know what you have just gotten yourself into. You are in for a big mess. I will make sure I deal with you." He said.

Gerald got more angry and was about to land another punch on him when Fiona shouted.

"Stop it! Stop it, Gerald!" Fiona shouted at him.

Gerald sneered at the both of them.

"Now tell me, who is the one in trouble now?" He asked Ivan.

Fiona was scared. She had never seen this side of Gerald before. Before he went to prison, he was always docile and obedient. But now, she wondered how he had suddenly become stronger while he was in prison.

Fiona wondered what Gerald would have gone through in prison that would make him this strong.

She was still wondering when a man called Gerald from a distance.

"You must be Gerald." He said.

"Yes," Gerald answered.

"Please, do come inside so we can complete the hiring formalities." The man said to Gerald.

"Alright," Gerald said to the man, "I'll be right there."

As the man left, Gerald turned to Ivan.

"You got lucky this time. Next time you won't be so lucky. I will make sure you beg for mercy." He threatened Ivan as he walked away.

Gerald enter the man's office and sat down on the chair.

"My name is Henry." The man said to Gerald. "And I am the one in charge of hiring drivers for Yola company."

"OK, thank you," Gerald said to the man.

"Now, you go upstairs and take a passport photo. Then you come back and you sign the document and the formalities will be done." The man instructed Gerald.

Fiona could not believe that Gerald had come to the company to sign up as a driver.

The awe she had felt for him evaporated and she scoffed at him immediately he came out.

Ivan quickly stood up also as he saw him and walked to meet Gerald. He started making trouble again for Gerald.

Fiona stepped in and stopped Ivan.

"Ivan, stop. We cannot cause more trouble. If this escalates, it will cause problems between me and Grace. And you know how important the cooperation is needed for my company." She reminded Ivan.

Iwan could not just accept defeat.

"Fiona, if I don't deal with this mess, it will affect my pride." Iwan complained.

"I know, but we just have to let him go. After all, nobody would like to employ someone with a criminal record like Gerald." She said.

Gerald walked past him and went to take the photo. When he was done, he came out.

As he was about to enter Henry's office, Ivan even went to meet him again.

"You loser," he said. "Don't think you have escaped this time."

Gerald looked at him.

"It's like you want another beating, you know." Gerald says to him.

Ivan balled his hand in a fist. He was angry.

"You are fired. Just know that. You will never be employed in any place in this world. I promise you that."

"Ivan, let's go. We have something more important to do than to waste our time on this slow-life- ex convict," Fiona said to Iwan, and she led him away from Gerald.

"It is not over, Gerald. It is not over. We will surely meet again, and this time I will make sure you pay for this thing you have done." Ivan threatened as he walked away.

Gerald ignored them and entered Henry's office to sign the paper.

"I am back." Gerald said as he handed the photos over to Henry.

Henry took the photo, looked at it, and began to flip through Gerald's record that he had submitted.

As he checked it, his mood suddenly changed from that of respect which he initially had for Gerald to something else.

He had a smug look on his face.

"Where is the document that I am to sign?" Gerald asked him.

Henry pointed the document to Gerald.

Gerald was about to sign the document but then Henry suddenly held his hand.

"Wait you," Henry said to Gerald.

"Isn't it funny how you, with a criminal record, would come here to apply for a job in a prestigious company like Yola Company? Do you think we need somebody like you to dent the image of the company?" Henry mocked him.

Gerald stopped midway in signing the document and he looked up at Henry.

"So what are you trying to say?" He asked Henry.

"What I'm trying to tell you is that someone like you does not deserve to work at Yola Company. Your criminal records would dent our image. You are supposed to look for a job somewhere else. You are just being greedy by coming here." Henry accused him.

"Do you think you have the right to judge me?" Gerald asked Henry.

Henry scoffed at him.

"I have every right to judge you because I'm the one in charge of recruiting drivers. Even as a driver, we still cannot accept someone with criminal records. I wonder what stunt you have put up that would allow the CEO to accept you as a driver. Just have this in mind, YOLA company is not for people like you." Henry said.
