Chapter 26

Nora blinked, her eyes teary, and her face pouted in sadness at Layla's dead body.

"By the look on your face, you know her." Her partner, Evan Griffin noticed.

Nora nodded. "Layla Gates. She goes to Cap. U with my daughter. They're friends."

Nora frowned at the disgusting sight and squatted in front of Layla's dead body. "Who..who the hell will do this?"

"Rogers, Griffin! I got an ID. Layla Gates." Officer Ross came to them with a purse.

Nora stood up, and they nodded. "By the looks of that. Nothing was stolen."

Officer Ross nodded. "Nothing at all. The coroner will be taking the body to forensics. Something was taken from her, we just don't know what."

Nora let out a brooding sigh looking at Layla. "I guess that's one way to start the investigation. Who found her?"

"Let me take you to her." Officer Ross offered and walked.

They followed him and went to the lady standing with other cops.

"Hi." Nora greeted. "We're detectives from the CCPD police department." They showed their badges. "We wanna ask a few questions."

"I've answered all I know." The girl told them.

"But not to us." Evan made it known.

The girl sighed and nodded.

"Who're you?" Nora asked.

"Rita Cox. I'm a tenant in this building."

"Do you know who she came to meet?" Evan asked.

Rita shook her head. "I don't know her. This is the first time I met her. Her dead body rather."

"You must know someone who could have an inkling. Anyone of the tenants here." Nora implied.

Rita gulped. "Um, you could ask Ivy. I'm surprised she wasn't the one who saw the dead body."

They both nodded and turned around to see Layla was already put in a body bag.

"I think this case will be tough," Evan stated the obvious.

Nora nodded in agreement. "Indeed."

She sighed and decided to call Kara for the bad news.

Kara hung up the phone, her face devoid of expression. She was in a state of shock at the news.

"Kara!" Zoey called for the third time. "Kara, what's wrong?"

Kara looked at Zoey. "It's Layla. She's dead."

"What?" Zoey blurted out.

"My mom told me just now. She's dead, Zoey."

"

Ho..how?" Zoey asked still in disbelief.

Kara shook her head. "No idea. We have to go back to the city tomorrow. We need to abort. We've found enough."

Zoey nodded. "Alright."

"You were asked to find it, Vrath. Not to kill someone." Brainold scolded.

"Let him be, Brain. He hasn't had that kind of food for a long time." Gordon defended.

Brainold grunted in annoyance and shook his head.

"Well, no one said it'll be easy," Lucifer added with a shrug.

"Well, tomorrow you'll continue your search. You can go around eating if you want, but make sure you do your job." Trick ordered it.

"And this time around, possess someone. It won't be okay if a human sees you." Brain warned.

The Vrath nodded and flew away.

"We've been waiting years, and years for this. What more is one or two more?" Trick told them.

"Apparently, humans need to know who rules hell, and not me." Lucifer made known.

Gordon nodded. "Indeed. I'm even a better fire monster than you."

Lucifer shook his head. "You lie, Gordon. Your kind of power is reckless, mine isn't. I control the flame. One touch on me doesn't kill. I'm better, and I fly."

"And your wings are thanks to where you came from," Brainold told him.

Lucifer nodded. "Yeah, it is. Although all my hard work in heaven didn't pay off that much. We lost it still."

"That's why we need to get it back." Trick concluded.
