Chapter 28

Hunter shook his head in anger at the man he came to meet. "What on earth are you yammering about?"

The man gulped, let out a breath, and nodded. "Dos niñas. Vinieron aquí. Nos estaban mirando. Los enviaste? (Two girls. They came here. They were watching us. You sent them?)"

Hunter shook his head in confusion. "No, no lo hice.(No I didn't.)"

"Creo que estaban investigando. (I think they were investigating us.)"

Hunter furrowed his brows wondering about his statements. He wondered who, and somehow he got a thought. It was random cause he wasn't sure, then he brought his phone out, did something with it, and show it to the man. "¿Esta chica es una de ellas? (Is this one of them?)"

The man immediately nodded. "Si. Si. Ella estaba. (Yes. Yes. She was.)"

Hunter sighed. "Hmm. Okay. So, cuantas pruebas tienes? (So, how much evidence have you gotten?)"

"Todavía no he visto a tu padre, pero... (I haven't yet seen your father, but...)" He brought out a document and handed it to Hunter. "Robé esto de la oficina del jefe. Es un documento que muestra que la finca es de tu papá. (I stole this from the boss's office. It's a document that shows the farm belongs to him.)"

Hunter took it and looked at it. "Es una evidencia. Él esta involucrado con todo lo que sucede en la granja. (It's evidence. It means he's involved with everything going on in that farm.)"

The man nodded. "¿nos salvarás? Por favor sálvanos. No quiero ser el próximo en morir. (You'll save us? Please save us. I don't want to be the next to die.)"

Hunter looked at him. "Intentaré dar lo mejor de mi. Ten cuidado. (I'll try my best. Be careful.)"

The man nodded. "Si."

Hunter smirked. Now, he's got something else to talk to Kara about.

"The case about Layla's death. How's it going?" Zoey asked.

Kara sighed and looked at her. "Nothing yet. Although, the search for Michael Richie is still ongoing, and since they haven't found him yet, they can't give an explanation to the case of how she was killed."

Zoey nodded. "But there must be a thought."

"Yeah. They found traces of drugs in her system, chunks of the powder scattered in her purse. It was evident that she was using, so they concluded Michael was her supplier."

Zoey nodded again. "What if we tell them about the friend? The one who invited her to the hook. She must know something about Michael."

Kara narrowed her eyes at the suggestion. It was smart. "But, we don't actually know her."

"I do. Michelle Lane."

Kara nodded. "Okay. I'll tell my mom. I just hope she isn't in hiding too."

Zoey nodded in agreement. "Yeah."

Kara dialed her mom's number, after three rings. "This is Nora Rogers speaking. Who are you?"

Kara rolled her eyes. "Seriously, mom. You didn't check your caller ID?"

Nora gaped and looked at her phone. "Oh. Kara. Sorry, I've just been busy."

Kara nodded getting her. "I get it, mom. I've got a lead for you."

Nora sat on her chair in curiosity. "A lead?"

Kara nodded. "Yeah. As you know, Layla used drugs, and she's got a friend who also does the same, so I'm sure that girl could be one step for us toward closing the case."

"Who is she?"

"Michelle Lane. She was the one who invited Layla to the hook."

Nora nodded. "OK. We'll do a search on her."

Kara smiled and hung up.

Meanwhile, Zoey's eyes narrowed on her screen at something she got. "Oh wow."

Kara looked at her, and at the screen. "What's it?"

"Look at the farm's property records, Kara."

Kara's eyes equally narrowed at it. "This is confusing. As big as the farm is, it shows it only began last year?"

Zoey nodded. "Yeah, but it doesn't seem right." She scrolled down, and down, and her eyes caught something. "Am I seeing it wrong or what?"

Kara equally looked at it and shook her head. "I don't think you are, Zoey. The man's got investors on his farm, and Leonard Vander's name seems to be the carousel of the records."

Zoey looked at her with a look of disbelief. "It's..it's all connected?"

Kara nodded. "Turns out. And if it is, then my guts tell me Philip Stark is lurking around behind the scenes."
