Hector had just walked into the party, his eyes scanning the place for Madison. He needed to find her so he could check up on her. He had heard from Sheila that they would be guests at the party.
Since they had no invitation, it was crystal clear who they had come with: none other than Jack Jayden. Hector’s eyes fell on Jack, who both Julia and Fiona surrounded.
They were in a discussion, and his gaze darted to Madison. She had a frown on her face, her fist clenching tightly around the glass in her hand.
Were they talking about her? he wondered.
Just then, their eyes met. Her eyes rounded in surprise, and she flashed him a bright smile, startling him; then the frown appeared on her face again as she dropped the glass on the table nearest to her and hurried over to him.
“What was going on?”
Hector had no idea why she was sprinting toward him with such incredible speed. Her long red hair flew in the air, and her green eyes held an aura of anticipation and determination. It was then he recognized that look.
His eyes widened as he backed away. Was she hurrying over to scold me?
“What are you doing here?” she seethed, folding her arms. “You disappeared all day and decided to show up here. I’m sure you didn’t bother to head home. How do you know we are here?”
“I…” Hector tried to say.
“No need,” she said, cutting him off with a sigh. “There’s no time for you to be here. You should leave.” She gestured for the door. “You are not properly dressed to be here. If the others see you, they will make fun of you.”
Is she worried about me? he asked himself.
“It would be bad if you embarrassed the Edmund family and yourself by dressing like that at a high-end event,” she stated, making his thoughts disappear.
When he said nothing but stared at her blankly, she knew she had to get him out of there before Jack saw him. “Jack might look for me any moment,” she told him. “You should leave instead of causing trouble.”
Hector's brows furrowed. “I am not ready to leave my wife in the hands of another man,” he muttered. “I told you I was going to help save the company’s crisis. That was why I wasn’t home…”
“Oh, if it isn't the poor son-in-law!” Julia drawled, appearing behind Madison, her hand over her lips as if she had come across them by chance.
Madison spun around to look at Julia, forcing herself not to glare at her. After saying all those things to Jack, she had come to her like a goody two shoes.
“Madison, you didn’t tell me Hector was coming. I don’t know if he had an invitation.” Julia continued, eyeing Hector. “Did you ask him to dress that way for a great function like this one?”
Julia intentionally made her voice loud enough to grab the attention of the Edmund family and a few guests nearby. She had heard Madison asking Hector to leave, but there was no way she was going to throw away her source of entertainment now that he presented himself.
“He came to the party without an invitation?” one of the guests asked. “My son wasn’t able to work since he didn’t have an invitation.”
“Did he sneak in here?” another one questioned. “Or did his wife get him the invitation?”
“Why don’t we go to the rest of the family?” Julia suggested when none of them responded to her. “You can’t leave once you have entered.”
“Julia!” Madison yelled, clearly aware of what Julia was scheming.
Noticing the tension, Hector didn’t want Madison to be the topic of discussion if their argument escalated. “Alright. Let’s go to the rest of the family,” he replied.
Madison turned around to look at him. “I asked you to leave.”
“But I can’t anymore,” he said. “Let’s meet the rest.”
Taking the moment, Julia leaned in closer to Madison, her grin even more malicious. “He listened to me, rather than you. Just focus on getting married to Jack, and I will take care of Hector.”
Teeth gritting, Madison brushed past Julia, her expression dark. “Do whatever you want. He is an idiot.”
Hector sighed. Is she mad at me?
Following Julia, Hector walked toward the Edmund family. Mere looking at them from afar, he could see the disdain on their faces. He could tell that he wasn’t welcome there.
Even Madison was glaring at him, the look on her face from earlier gone.
“This is Madison’s soon-to-be ex-husband,” Julia introduced Hector to Jack.
Jack eyed Hector, and a grin spread across his face. He knew Madison’s husband was poor, but he didn’t expect it to be this bad.
“What are you doing here?” Fiona demanded, glaring at Hector, afraid he might ruin the plans for the marriage. “After disappearing for half a day, you have the guts to come back here! Madison already found a husband; you stand no chance!”
Hector frowned at her, and a smirk curled up her lips.
“That’s right!” Jack agreed. “Madison has found a man like me to marry, and you are less relevant! You are just a piece of shit that has to be discarded. Everyone in the Edmund family has given up on you, and your wife will be mine soon.”
Hector took in the sight of the man his wife was meant to marry. Dressed in a luxurious tailored black suit and pants, he wore a white shirt that clung to his large belly, the buttons barely holding on, as if they were fighting for their lives.
Holding a cup of red wine in his hand, a mocking smile spread across Jack's face, making him look like a pig in expensive clothing.
“Look around you,” Jack began. “Can’t you read the room and see that you are not welcome here in such a shabby outfit? You are just a useless son-in-law who is unable to help the family through the company crisis. Unlike you, I have the money and connections to help them, and I will be helping them tonight.”
Staring directly at Jack, Hector said with a cold smile.
"Do not overestimate your own importance. From today onwards, the Edmund family no longer needs your help."
Hector’s words had been so loud that everyone at the party overheard them. While Jack questioned him, his voice was sharp, clearly meant to draw attention to their exchange.“What’s going on over there?” one of the guests asked. “Arguing over power at an event like this? Unbelievable.”“Who do they think they are to treat Washington this way?” “And who’s that beggar? How could he show up dressed so shabbily? Doesn’t he realize he’ll be ridiculed?”The murmurs spread through the room, but only a few were openly speaking. Tedmond narrowed his eyes at those talking, while others simply watched in silence. The ones speaking were three women who looked like they had stepped off a magazine cover, dressed in magnificent body-hugging gowns. They’re still not as pretty as Madison, Hector thought, turning his gaze away from them.Suddenly, Jack burst into laughter, the sound echoing through the room. Hector’s brows furrowed, watching as Jack continued laughing without stopping.Meanwhile, Madiso
Hearing Hector’s words, Jack couldn’t help but yell. “You! How dare you?! How dare you ask me that?! Who the heck do you think you are?!”The Edmund family glared at Hector at the same time. Hector looked away from them. Just looking at them, he could tell what was coming yet.“How could you talk to Mr. Jayden like that?!” Julia bellowed, glaring at Hector. “Who do you think you are?! You better shut up and leave just like you had come.”“Why are you so bent on chasing our helper when you couldn’t help at all?!” Fiona demanded. “You were so happy about Madison, so don’t you dare claim to want to stop the marriage when you actually like it.”Not paying attention, Hector didn’t say anything to them. From what he had seen so far, he could tell that they wouldn’t believe him anyway. ‘It’s better for them to see it all by themselves.’“Don’t worry yourself, ladies,” Jack said. “Don’t pay attention to him! Treat him like wallpaper. Once the Edmund family becomes the bronze-level partner thro
The Edmund family’s gazes lingered on Jack, their eyes questioning. Breaking into a cold sweat, Jack hurriedly thought of an excuse to give. He had made sure to arrange for the Edmund family’s name to be included in the Bronze Level list, but he couldn’t understand why it wasn’t there.“We are waiting for a response, Jack,” Hector muttered, his voice taunting.Glaring at Hector, Jack’s brows twitched in anger. How dare he speak to me like that? He’s just trash! He wanted to yell at Hector, but this wasn’t the right situation, especially since the whole Edmund family was looking up to him.He couldn’t lose the opportunity to win over a beauty like Madison, and if he could help the family and marry her, Hector wouldn’t be able to challenge him anymore. The Edmund family had many questions, and they didn’t hesitate to ask.“Are our names really on the list of partners?” Abigail asked. “You claimed that our name would be there. Don’t tell me this was a prank?”“We’ve been so excited about
From shock, Jack’s face paled. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard: his family wasn’t the Gold-level member he had expected. His eyes widened in disbelief— instead of his family holding the last Gold-level spot, it was the Edmund family who had secured it.The Edmund family members broke into smiles after the announcement. Their eyes beamed with excitement. Although they hadn’t expected to hear their name, the opportunity thrilled them.Madison’s face broke into a smile. She had been worried about marrying Jack for the sake of the company, but now, with this change, she had a reason to reject the proposition.A genuine smile appeared on her face, and she let it show without hesitation.“I can’t believe we’re a Gold-level partner,” Julia muttered. “I thought we’d start as Bronze-level partners at best. How did we jump straight to Gold?”Abigail, grinning from ear to ear, cast a slight frown at Julia. “We reached the Gold-level partnership! This must be pure luck—we’re so fortunat
Everyone scowled at him, unwilling to listen to what he had to say. How could they believe someone like him could tell a lie that blatant?“Who the hell would want to listen to a dunce like you?” Julia sneered. “We have no reason to listen to you.”Hector shrugged. “I don’t think I need your permission,” he replied. “I’ll just say it anyway. I once saved the owner of Lord’s Limited without realizing who he was, and he owed me a favor. I used that favor to help the Edmund family business in its crisis,” he announced. All the family members’ eyes widened in shock. Even Jack was stunned to hear that Hector had been the one to help. Teeth gritting in frustration, Jack’s fists clenched.Hector had humiliated him, and he wasn't about to let it go. Turning, Jack stormed out of the event, tail between his legs, a frown darkening his face. There was no way he was letting this slide.Upon hearing Hector’s words, Julia wanted to protest but thought twice. Although he might be worthless in her ey
Hector averted his eyes from Madison and glanced at the Edmund family members before him. They were all glaring at him, and resentment and hatred were clear in their eyes. They had done so much to get rid of him, but their plan failed, and now they had to deal with him.If only he hadn’t interfered and had let Jack do his task, this wouldn’t be happening now. This was their chance to get him out of the family.“What makes you think he can go back to the family?!” Julia demanded. “That idiot was happy about the divorce that hasn’t even happened yet. He was even glad to receive the money you requested on his behalf. What made you think about letting him return to the family as if nothing happened?!”Madison frowned. “That might have been a misunderstanding. If he wanted the money, as you claim, he wouldn’t have helped us; he could have gotten the amount from the president of Lord’s Limited.”Julia scowled at Madison. If Madison was still willing to be with Hector, she would have no choi
The Edmund family stared at Hector, their gazes filled with mockery. He had just announced that he would prove himself worthy of being Madison’s husband and even claimed he would surpass Jack. His words sounded nonsense to them, as they’d known Hector for three years. In their eyes, surpassing the Jayden family was an impossible feat for him.“Give it up,” Julia muttered. “Pigs would fly before that happens.”“Don’t be ridiculous; that’s something you cannot achieve.”“How is a loser like you going to prove you’re worthy of being her husband? How could you possibly prove you’re better than Jack?”“Talk about empty promises.”Fiona nodded in agreement. “It’s not like you can prove anything,” she added. “You’re wasting your time trying to show us you’re better than Jack. You’ll always be trash.”Fiona's words were meant to annoy Hector and crush his confidence, but they didn’t faze him.“Yeah,” Hector replied. “We’ll see about that and find out who the real trash is.”Her teeth gritted
All the salespeople ignored him and returned to their previous tasks as if he wasn’t there. They chatted amongst themselves and acted as though he was invisible. Hector wasn’t bothered by it since he was used to people treating him that way. However, this company was the only one that could provide the type of villa he wanted, so he had no choice but to buy from them.He looked around for a salesperson who appeared welcoming, and his gaze fell on one of the staff members—a young woman going through files on a desk. She seemed to be in her early twenties and had an innocent look.Like the others, she wasn’t paying attention to him, but she appeared more approachable than anyone else in the building. The rest of the staff glared at him as though he had wronged them.“Would you assist me?” Hector asked, walking over to the woman. “I’d like to see the villas available for sale.”The woman looked up, her brows furrowing in confusion. Hesitation flickered in her eyes, and she glanced at her
Hector got on his scooter, putting on his helmet. He looked tired after listening to the twins talk for so long. Since their idea was one of the easiest they had come up with, they had piled on countless side addresses. Sighing, Hector tilted his head side to side, stretching his neck to feel some relief. “Now, all I have to do is buy a building or rent one?” He thought about it. If he bought a building and Madison got involved, she might find out. However, renting wasn’t ideal either. Buying a building seemed like the better option, so he headed over to a store specializing in buildings suitable for a restaurant. Parking his scooter in the lot, he was reminded of his old, worn-out one. He felt grateful to Meira for buying him a new one. His first scooter had been something he saved up for over a long time. As Hector walked into the building, all the salespeople turned to look at him. Though he was dressed in a suit, it was a simple one that anyone could wear. They scowl
