Dave intended to buy a gift for Ava at the jewelry store.

Despite Ava's unhappiness, they had successfully obtained their marriage certificate that day and were legally married.

Deep inside of him, he felt that the marriage was too hasty, as he had not made adequate preparations and had only obtained the certificate due to the urging of Ava's grandfather, resulting in a lack of any sense of ceremony.

However, notwithstanding Ava's deep misunderstanding of him, he decided to buy a nice piece of jewelry, at least, to show Ava that he wasn't as worthless as she thought, hoping to change her opinion of him.

Carl wanted to accompany Dave into the store, but Dave refused, knowing that the jewelry store was under Carl's ownership.

If Carl went with him, it wouldn't be seen as shopping but accepting a tribute, which would be meaningless apart from the fact that it also stood the risk of Carl revealing his identity in the store, unconsciously.
