Business Party

Chapter 2

“Father!!!” Susan called her father because she knows where this is heading, she knew it’s headed towards the direction that’s not in her favor.

Mr. Clinton responded with a loud bang on the table, he narrowed his eyes and aimed a very harsh glare at me.

What now? It’s not my fault that your daughter doesn’t want to have a baby – I mentally screamed.

“How dare you yell at me? Have you lost it?” he was scolding his daughter, yet his eyes were on me. “Moreover, I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to this bastard husband of yours”

He stepped closer to me, I could feel his breath on my nose.

“He doesn’t feel ashamed for not having a job, he to eats my food, I feed and cloth him and yet, he can’t even do the simplest job, he can’t get you pregnant!” he yelled in my face.

He is blaming me for not having a job, he is blaming me for being worthless, and for not being able to impregnate his daughter who doesn’t even seem like she wants anything to do with me.

Despite feeling unfairly accused, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of fear. In fact, I had only slept with Susan once, and that was a long time ago when she had come home drunk.

However, Mr. Clinton did not know any of this, and perhaps it would be best to keep my thoughts to myself.

Then Susan spoke up, trying to appease her father,

“Father we will work towards it,” she said, but her words seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Mr. Clinton roughly pushed me out of his way, making me fall on my butts, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anger at the unfair treatment. Mr. Clinton continued his tirade, calling me a good-for-nothing, low-life and questioning my contributions to the household.

Despite everything, I knew better than to reply and instead bowed my head, staring at the ground… it’s better this way.

“Honey, they have an important party today. You know how significant that party is to our company? You should let them come back before doing this,” Mrs. Clinton stepped in while glaring accusingly at me.

It was obvious that she was the only one who could calm her husband down at this point.

“We are sorry, father,” I added.

“Don’t tell me sorry, let your action speak!” Mr. Clinton responded, then faced me again. “Please enlighten me, what’s your work in this house, you good-for-nothing, low life?”

“Honey, it’s okay” Mrs. Clinton said, trying to soothe him.

However, he didn’t seem to listen, and instead rushed into his room.

“Meet me outside,” Susan instructed me briskly as she hurried out.

I quickly got up from the floor and rushed after her. She threw the car keys at her driver, when we reached outside where her car’s parked. The driver caught the key, and rushed towards the back seat to open the door for us.

But as soon as he hurried over, Susan unexpectedly landed a resounding slap on his face, sending the driver and me into a state of shock.

I know he must be wondering the same thing as me – what did he do? Why did she slapped him?

“You should know your place, Stephen” she faced me with a glare, making my brows furrow involuntarily. “Do you want me to remind you before you opened the car door for me?” she asked angrily. “You’re useless, just like my father said,” she huffed.

Oh…so she slapped the driver because of me? I couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy towards myself.

Her tone was biting and filled with contempt, suggesting that there was more to her frustrations than just my failure to open the car door. Despite not understanding the underlying reason for her anger, I kept silent, not wanting to exacerbate the already tense atmosphere.

••••••

Susan and I arrived at the business party, and all eyes were on her the moment we arrived, because she is the daughter of an influential businessman.

I felt improper, like a mere puppet there just to support my wife. Despite the feeling of not belonging, I put on a brave face and tried to mingle with the other attendees.

However, as the night progressed, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being unwelcome there. Everyone else seemed to have a high status, and I felt like an outsider that I am.

I tried to engage in conversations, but I was unable to contribute much to the topics at hand, and so I just stayed silent, and resorted to bring an observer instead.

Despite my feelings of being improper, I made sure to stay close to Susan and support her throughout the evening.

“Excuse me” she says, before standing up from our seat.

As my wife excuses herself to go mingle with some people, I notice a lady waving at me. I feel a pang of anxiety, not wanting to encounter any problems, especially with Susan potentially coming back soon.

The lady came over to our table, and offers me a glass of champagne despite my polite rejection. I accepted the champagne, but dropped it on the table instead of drinking it.

“Do you recognize me?” she asked.

I tilted my head and raised an eyebrow, trying to recall if I’ve met her somewhere before, but nothing.

“No” I answered.

Her brows furrowed. “You don’t recognize me?”

“No” I answered again, although she looks quite familiar but I can’t put a finger on it.

“How come?”

I chuckled lightly because her question sounded funny to me.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t think we are acquainted,” I said to her, trying to keep the conversation brief.

But sadly, the woman didn’t get my intention, she kept insisting I know her and I’m just denying because I came here with my wife.

Is she mistaking me for someone else? Or was she one of my clients when I was a cab driver?

“I am sorry, I don’t think we have met before. Can we end this conversation now?” I asked her politely, hoping to avoid any further interaction.

She stayed silent for a while, staring at me as if she’s trying to figure something out. She finally got up, reached into her purse and pulled out a business card.

“Here’s my card, in case you recall something and need to talk to someone,” she tells me with a wink.

I am hesitant to take the card, because I don’t know her motives at the moment, but I collected the card anyway so that she can leave.

“Thanks,” I said after accepting the card.

She simply flashed me a smile before walking away.

As I examine the card, I realize that the woman is the president of Legion, Electronics and more, and she is the president.

I can’t believe that the president of that renowned company just spoke with me. Am I dreaming? They’re number one in the world.

After accepting the card from the strange woman, I hastily put the card in my back pocket, not wanting Susan to find out about my interaction with a stranger.

Hours later, I began to search for her. I walked around the now vacant hall, feeling anxious as I couldn’t locate her. Everyone had left the party, except for me and my wife.

As I walked, I became increasingly concerned that something bad had happened to her.

I decided to check the bathroom, hoping to find her there. What awaited me there was utterly shocking and disgusting, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

The bathroom was In a complete mess, and I was left wondering what the hell was going on here.
