Jealousy

I took a deep breath before responding.

"Clinton, I appreciate your concern for Nathalie, and I know how much you care about her. But I think she's old enough to make her own decisions, and I don't want to interfere with her happiness. If she's happy with me, then I'm happy too. But if she decides that she doesn't want to be with me but you, then I'll respect her decision. All I can promise is that I'll always be honest with her, and I'll always treat her with respect. I don't want to bother her with my feeling, since she choose to be with you now.

Clinton looked at me thoughtfully, then nodded slowly.

"I appreciate your honesty, and I can see that you're a good person. I just want to make sure that you're serious about her, and that you're not just playing games. I don't want her to get hurt." He paused, then continued, "I have a request. I want to see you two interact, to see how you get along. Could you and Nathalie come to dinner with me tomorrow?"
