Chapter 6

"What?", Richard blinked.

"Miss Linda has agreed to pay your mother's hospital bills", Mr. James repeated to Richard who was looking at him with a confused expression.

"Did she say that?", Richard asked.

"Yes", Mr. James nodded.

"I told her to inform you of her decision, but I guess she forgot", Mr. James added.

A smile bloomed on Richard's face.

"Did she really say that?", Richard asked.

"Yes", Mr. James nodded and turned around to leave.

Richard's joy knew no bounds. His stunt yesterday had worked. The entire Wayne family was currently angry with him but it didn't matter, they would just give him more chores and errands to run which he would do without complaining because at least he knew his mother would be getting the surgery.

"Master Gray", somebody suddenly called out to him.

Richard turned and saw that it was one of the maids, Sara. The maids and the helpers around the house were the only ones who regarded him as such, despite the treatment from the Wayne family. They were usually kind to him.

"Yes, Sara, is there a problem?", Richard asked her.

"Master Lawrence said to tell you to have his laundry from his room and have it done", Sara told him.

Richard sighed and was silent for a few minutes.

"If you don't want to Master Gray, I could ask someone else to do it, or I could do it myself", Sara offered after a few minutes of silence.

Richard was silent for a few more minutes as he thought about the fact that his mother was about to get the surgery.

"It's alright. I'll do it", Richard shook his head.

"Alright, Master Gray", Sara said before she left.

Richard went up the stairs and headed for Lawrence's room. When he got there, he opened the door and walked in slowly. Lawrence's room was a shade of black, gray and white. It was monochrome and looked very dark with the curtains drawn down.

Richard made his way to where the laundry was kept and picked it up. On his way out of the room, he passed by Lawrence's work table.

He stopped as a document on the table caught his eye. He dropped the laundry and picked up the document. He scanned through it and he immediately understood what it was.

It was a partnership contract between the Wayne family company and another investment company.

He recognized the name of the company, the partnership had been in discussion since when he was still in the company. It was a major debate in the company and in the family back then.

Edward and Lawrence wanted to approve the partnership as fast they could but the old master was wary, for good reasons. Now that the old master was dead, it looks like they had gone ahead with the partnership after all.

Richard scanned through the document once again, when he was in the company, he too had shared in the old master's worries although he had shared in them silently since his opinion on the matter wasn't ever really asked for.

Richard dropped the document back on the table. He doubted the Wayne family would appreciate his opinion now too. He picked up the laundry and left the room, closing the door behind him.

Richard spent the rest of the day doing his regular chores but he was in a good mood. As he thought about his mom, he couldn't help but be in a good mood. He planned to visit the hospital as soon as he could to speak to the doctor. Despite the fact that he was doing chores he shouldn't do, to Richard life was as good as it could get. Richard's peace and quietness however was disrupted when Lawrence returned from work.

Lawrence returned from work, went upstairs to his room but soon came back downstairs, shaking from anger.

"Where is he?!", Richard shouted as he walked down the stairs briskly.

"Lawrence, what is it?", Camilla asked as she came out of her room, also alerted by Lawrence's shouting.

"Where is he? Richard!!!", Lawrence yelled as he came down the stairs.

"Lawrence! What is it? What is going on? Why are you shouting?", Camilla asked again.

Lawrence ignored his mother and continued shouting for Richard.

"Richard! Richard!!"

By now most of the maids and helpers had come out, alerted by the shouts. Richard was at the garden, taking a rest, unaware of the trouble that was stirring up in the house.

"Richard! Where is that bastard?!", Richard asked angrily.

Camilla came down the stairs.

"Lawrence, what the hell is wrong with you? Why are you looking for that nobody?", Camilla asked him.

"Mother, that son of a bitch had better come out before I completely lose it. He stole from me", Lawrence told her.

"What?", Camilla gasped.

Sara, who was watching the drama, quickly rushed out to the garden to get Richard.

Richard was leaning down against a tree, resting when Sara found him.

"Master Gray, Master Gray", Sara called out as she ran towards him.

Richard's eyes fluttered open.

"Master Gray, come quick", Sara said as she stopped in front of him, panting.

"What is it? What's wrong?", Richard asked.

"Master Lawrence is looking for you. Come quick, he's angry", Sara told him quickly.

Richard immediately shot up from his position. He stood still for a few seconds, trying to process what Sara said.

'Why would Lawrence be looking for him?'

"Let's go quick, Master Gray", Sara said, pulling Richard out of his thoughts.

Richard ran with Sara to the house. All the way there, Richard kept thinking of what he had done that would have made Lawrence angry. As he neared the house, he could now hear Lawrence's voice, shouting for him. Richard's heart skipped a beat and he slowed down his steps. He walked into the living room cautiously. Lawrence spotted him as soon as he walked in.

"You! You took it!", Lawrence exclaimed and began to advance towards Richard menacingly.
