Chapter 2

"Everyone has already explained it. Is it not enough to understand? Why are you still here, useless man?" Ella's gaze was intense. Her voice was so loud that the veins on her neck stood out.

"Mom, didn't I say that already? I just want to-"

"Want what? You want to humiliate my family even worse? Your presence here will only make things worse. You are indeed a stone person who always makes me angry. God, my head hurts because of you!" Ella massaged her forehead, which was throbbing with pain. Her anger had risen to the top of her head because she was sick of Clayton.

The chaos that ensued made Ahren come over. She had just finished entertaining the guests. Ahren was Daniel's granddaughter, who was married to Clayton. Their marriage was met with much resistance, but Daniel trusted Clayton to look after his granddaughter.

"What's going on?" asked Ahren, who now saw where Clayton was.

Ahren knew her family couldn't accept her husband, even though Clayton had never hurt them. However, Clayton' existence was considered bad luck in the family.

"Ahren, I just want to" Clayton' words were interrupted when Elle spoke up.

"This ignorant man has really upset us, Ahren. If only you'd taken Mom's word not to marry him back then, maybe this mess wouldn't have happened. You should divorce him and marry Hugo, Ahren. Just look at the comparison in their clothes, it's obvious."

"Mom, there are a lot of guests here, it's not appropriate for us to argue over this little thing. Clayton, what are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to stay at home?"

"Ahren, I wanted to come to honor your late grandfather. Is that wrong?" Clayton looked at Ahren with a sad gaze. His tone of voice sounded soft and gentle, half-whispering.

"Very wrong, fool! Don't you understand the prohibition against poor people coming here? You're not part of this family! You're just an outsider who's a nuisance!" said Austin, visibly annoyed by Clayton' presence.

"Ahren, you should just divorce him. I don't want him to jinx our family even more. Look at Hugo, he's waiting for you so faithfully." Ella pointed at Hugo with pride. She even smiled kindly at him.

"Mom, I can't do it. All right, I'll take Clayton away. Come with me, Clayton." Ahren pulled Clayton by the hand to get out, away from the crowd of guests and family.

Clayton' only move was to obey Ahren. Apart from his wife and Daniel, no one from the Astor Family would accept him there.

Clayton stopped his steps and let go of Ahren's hand. An argument started there.

"Ahren, I just want to honor your grandfather, is that wrong? I want to say a final farewell to him. He's been very instrumental in my life Ahren."

"Clayton, I know. But it's not possible for you to do that. You can see for yourself how they insult you. Don't you have a heart?" Ahren glanced around. She feared that people would think badly, making the situation even more chaotic. Especially seeing the clothes Clayton was wearing, it would definitely make those people scoff. She would also get into trouble because of Clayton.

"I'm ignoring it for my own purposes, Ahren. I don't care about their insults, as long as my goal of paying my last respects is realized."

"Clayton, I didn't want to say this. But, you don't seem to have any sense by doing so. If I were you, I wouldn't set foot there. You could see it, they were rude and cruel to you."

Clayton glanced around. Everyone's gaze was cynical and filled with hatred. They were uncomfortable with Clayton' presence. The situation was even more chaotic, and I felt stuffy and claustrophobic. Sharp words flew out of the mouths of all the busy people blaspheming Clayton.

"You're right, I don't have the common sense to take that insult. Even though my chest was hurting, but I knew that responding to them would only make things worse. That's why I kept quiet and accepted it, not that I don't have a heart."

The two seemed to argue about Clayton' arrival and Ahren's annoyance at what her mother and family said.

In addition to being indebted, Clayton feels he owes Daniel his life for saving him. Despite his memory loss, Clayton is brilliant, according to Daniel. Therefore, Clayton has been in the Astor Family until now. However, Daniel's death made the rest of the Astor Family feel like they no longer needed Clayton. In fact, they tried to separate Clayton from Ahren.

"Clayton, you better listen to what I have to say. If I forbid you to go there, it's all for your own good. I know you must be hurt by their words. But why are you being so stupid? You're also angering my mother."

"If I hadn't been there, You might get married without my permission."

“Clayton! Don't you trust me?"

"Never mind, Ahren. I'd better comply by going home."

"Clayton, listen to me-"

"No problem, just go back there. I'll walk home myself. You don't have to drive me."

Clayton walked away from Ahren, his heavy steps because he couldn't pay his last respects to Daniel really hurt his heart.

The distance from the funeral home to his house was extended and time-consuming. Clayton just walked like an ordinary person with eyes that looked empty-dreamy.

"Huh... why does it have to end like this? Grandpa, I don't think I can pay my last respects to you."

Clayton stopped his steps, with his head bowed to hide his sadness. His breathing was so heavy, he had just lost the figure who had always made him a good human being.

"I'll try to pay my respects at your grave, grandpa?"

Just as Clayton finished his sentence, a black-painted sedan approached him. Three people got out of it and immediately grabbed Clayton to prevent him from resisting. Clayton tried to rebel and wanted to free himself from the hands of the people on his right and left.

"Let me go, who are you?" he asked, shaking his body.

Clayton' strength was undoubtedly not enough to resist the three of them until another car came and stopped in front of them. The car's headlights dazzled the eyes of the men holding Clayton. The car door opened, and several people got out.
