Halsey's eyes fluttered open. She expected to feel the excruciating pain inside her head as usual but to her surprise, she felt fine. Even healthy.
She had fallen asleep in the middle of an argument between her brother and the corridor filled with people picking on them. Although she knew there wasn't much she could do, she still felt she could've been supportive by staying awake.Being sucked into her world of self-pity that she failed to notice she was on an extremely comfortable bed and the room's temperature was just right.Even the monitor above her head which kept beeping every second should've told her she was in a hospital ward."Halsey?" Adair, who had been thinking about his life all morning, called out to her the moment he sensed she was awake. She gave no reply as she hadn't heard. Hence, he got up and walked towards her. Extending a finger, he touched her neck to feel her temperature. His cold finger transported her back to the hospital ward."Adair?" She called weakly, struggling to grasp his big hand.Adair held her fragile hand gently, then he rubbed her head. "The surgery was a success and the doctor said you'll be fine."Halsey batted her eyes a number of times as the words registered in her head. The surgery was a success? How did they afford the surgery?Seeing the surprise on her face, Adair chuckled and caressed her head. "There's someone I saved her life some years ago when I still had my memories. She recognized me and volunteered to pay for your surgery."Halsey's eyes became teary and before she knew it, tears spiraled down her cheeks."What is it? Does your head hurt? Hold on, I'll call the doctor." Adair said worriedly as he got up and walked out of the ward.Halsey, who was merely shedding tears of joy, smiled tearfully when she saw him walk inside with the doctor."Does your head hurt?" The doctor asked, trying to touch her.Halsey flinched and moved away from him. Due to her traumatic experience of being hit by everyone around her, she immediately shielded her face. The doctor froze in fright, beads of perspiration trickling down his forehead. He had no idea who Adair was, but the instruction he received from the higher-ups was to do anything Adair wanted him to.Adair frowned and sat beside Halsey on the bed, then moved her head to his chest. His eyes were firm as he said, "You no longer have to be scared of them, Halsey. Big brother will protect you.""They'll hurt you too. Let's just leave the hospital now." Halsey muttered weakly.Adair breathed out, his cold eyes settling on the doctor. The doctor who had been trying his best to minimize his presence in the room felt a chill run down his spine after being glanced at by Adair. He didn't know why the teenager seemed to have such an air of superiority around him."The doctor will make sure you're fine and then we can leave the hospital. If you don't let him check what's wrong with you, we might end up staying in this hospital for more days. The hospital bills will rack up and we'll run into debts once again." Adair said in a mischievous tone.Just like he expected, Halsey quickly looked up at me, her scalp going numb, "So the hospital bills won't rack up if he checks me and diagnoses me as fine?""Exactly." Adair nodded with a solemn look."So your friend also paid for the check-up, right?" Halsey asked again and didn't see the corners of Adair's lip curl into a smile. He agreed with her regardless, "I also have some money with me. Before the doctor's done with you, I'll be back with your favourite foods."His words quickly kept her in a good mood. Adair nodded at the doctor who quickly got to work. After confirming she was fine, he left the room in a haste."Go to sleep, and when you wake up, I'll be back with your favourite foods." Adair hummed softly, staring right into her eyes.Halsey smiled broadly and quickly slept off. Adair covered her up properly before walking out of the ward.Once outside, he leaned on the walls of the hospital corridor and closed his eyes. While the surgery was going on, his memories returned back to him.He wasn't an 18 year old nobody. He was a thousand years old vampire lord who lost his memories in a battle with the enemy. Most of his men had been killed off in the battle. Mustering every ounce of power in his body, he fought against the enemy and emerged victorious. He woke up the next day in the slums with no memory of who he was. That was when Halsey's parents, whose house he was beside, saw him and took him in.Being poor was a disease in this part of the world as the rich stomped down on anyone below them. And Halsey and her parents were part of the majority who died everyday thanks to the oppression of the rich."The world has changed ever since your disappearance." Sister who had been watching him from a distance, said.He turned to look at her and smiled. "The rich and powerful become more rich and powerful and the poor keep dying everyday.""Well, now that you have your memories back, I'm sure things can return back to being the way they used to." Sister smiled, her air of mystery now gone.Iris Dame as the world knew her was a very close friend of Adair and a vampire as well. Adair had turned her hundreds of years ago. And because he was too busy fighting off the enemy with his men, he had appointed her to take his place in his absence.Iris Dame was also a figure which only a few people knew about which included those in high authority. These people were either turned into vampires by her or by Adair. They too knew there was someone Iris was loyal to, but had no idea what he looked like or who he was. However, they were fine with it.Over the years, people only knew there was someone behind Iris Dame, but no one knew who it was or what he looked like. Soon, his existence slowly became a myth.Sister dipped her hand into her pocket and took out a black card. "I've been carrying it with me for three years with hopes that I'll give it to you soon. I'm glad I was able to." Adair collected the card and slipped it into his pocket without looking at it. He was no longer the poor Adair Huxley who would awe whenever he saw a luxurious car. As impossible as it sounded, the present Adair could have anything and everything he wants."I promised Halsey she'll eat her favourite foods once she wakes up. I should go." He said, intending to walk away when Sister appeared in front of him. "You don't need to stress yourself. I can have people deliver trays of food to her room. Aren't you curious to see what I've done with the wealth and power you entrusted into my care?" She asked in an unhurried tone. "You've done well with it obviously. So much that 300 million dollars doesn't seem like a lot." Adair chuckled. Colour slowly crept onto Sister's face, but she turned it away before he co
Collette had a conflicted look on her face when she heard Mason. She knew he'd really order his men to beat up Adair if Adair didn't do as he said. "My husband acted without thinking. I apologize on his behalf." She apologized, her eyes meeting with Mason's haughty eyes. However, Mason drew back his chair and sat on it, then he waved at the highly trained bodyguards he always walked around with. "Break his legs, but don't hurt the girl." He instructed and the three of them advanced towards Adair. From a glance, one could tell it wasn't their first time doing something like this. They were also eager because they knew satisfying Mason means a raise in their salaries. Without much thought, they advanced towards the lanky Adair. The one in front carelessly reached out to grab Adair, but had his hand grabbed instead. He struggled to release his hand for a few seconds, but realized he couldn't. The veins on his neck bulged when he saw his hand bend to the wrong direction, breaking i
"You're out of your mind if you think I'll ever apologize to you or your wretched wife!" Mason kept yelling, he refused to believe Steven would side with a person like Adair. Adair suddenly recalled Halsey who was still in the hospital and frowned. He still had to go to the delivery company he worked for. With that thought in mind, he decided to let Steven handle the situation. "He has two minutes to apologize to my wife." Adair declared, then pulled out the chair next to him for Collette. Collette was yet to understand why Steven was on their side and this made her nervous because men like Steven were not to be trusted. However, with Adair's eyes giving her the impression he'd take care of it, she sat down on the chair he pulled out.Steven bowed to Adair again and turned to Mason whose clothes now looked disheveled. He had quickly gotten up on his feet as soon as Adair released his hold on him. "Mr. Harrison, you've caused unrest in my hotel and even threatened the life of my m
Trevor, who was in an extremely bad mood, paused when he saw his worthless cousin in-law. Although Collette and Adair had gotten married in secret, being the most beautiful female in Crest Ville, a lot of people had their eyes on Collette. Everyone refused to believe the town's most beautiful female was getting married to someone who had no idea who he was and was obviously poor. The Pitt's family worth had been shaken a little due to the scandal, but they still remained at the top of the food chain. "Is this where you work now?" Trevor asked condescendingly. The former Adair would've lowered his head immediately and nodded rigorously. But this Adair pretended not to hear Trevor as he walked past him and headed into the manager's office. The manager, George Garfield who knew all about Adair and the Pitt's family quickly reprimanded Adair, "That is no way to speak to a customer. Apologize to him right now or I'll fire you!" Adair stared at George for a brief second before he grabb
The Pitt's Family Mansion Trevor stormed into the living room apparently livid with anger. The immediate family members consisted of the elderly Sarah Pitt and her two sons— her first son, David, second son, John and third son, Benjamin. Then David's wife; Olivia Pitt, John's wife; Abigail Pitt and Benjamin's wife, Layla Pitt. The patriarch of the family, Splane Pitt died more than ten years ago and Sarah had been shouldering all responsibilities ever since. Sarah had five grandchildren; Trevor and Alice, David's children. Evelyn and Noah who are twins, John's children and finally, Collette who is Benjamin's daughter. Being the first grandson of the family, Trevor's status in the family and company is higher than everyone else's other than his grandmother's. The first and second family all had prominent spots in the family's company. Layla and Benjamin on the other end had long been kicked out of the company after the scandal their daughter caused. Even the extended members in
After more than two weeks in the hospital, Halsey was finally deemed fit to return back home. The wooden door was pushed open and Collette gently led Halsey inside the house. The house was a small, simple space with basic furnishings and minimal decoration. The walls were unpainted and the bare floor was covered in cheap carpet. There were a few chairs arranged around a coffee table, the furniture old, mismatched, and in need of repair. The lighting was limited to a single overhead fixture. There were no curtains on the window and no decorative items such as pictures or plants making the pace feel bare and utilitarian."I'll make something for us to eat." Collette said as soon as she helped Halsey lay down. Adair gulped down forcefully. "Why don't we just eat out? Remember the manager at Kings Hotel said we can pay for anything we eat with the card he gave us." "And I told you he might've gotten the wrong person." Collette replied walking towards the kitchen sink which was situated
"Why did the estate security let a beggar in here?" One of those who had come to rent an apartment, voiced out as soon as he saw Adair. The place quietened down as everyone turned to see who it was. Even the house agent frowned and took out her phone. "I'll call them right now." The house agent said as she dialed their number. When it connected, she said in disdain, "There's a human trash in the estate which you have to take out. Be here as soon as possible." "Why does he look familiar?" Someone else commented, peering keenly at Adair's face. Adair was a handsome man who was built to perfection. He was the type of man people said walked out of a carefully made painting. However, because he was poor, everyone overlooked his handsomeness and despised him. "Isn't that Adair Huxley? The worthless thing: who got married to the most beautiful woman in Crest Ville?" Someone gasped from the side. Only then did everyone else recognize him. "His entire outfit isn't worth more than $5. Wh
The chubby man was Ezra Klein, and he was the manager of Diamond Ridge Estate and a few more popular estates in Crest Ville. He was a renowned figure. One that a lot of people hoped to butter up to. So the crowd were quite surprised to see him call such a lousy person like Adair 'sir'. Adair's lips spasmed as he glanced down at Ezra. He had his reason for not presenting himself to the world which was because he intended to live his life in peace. After losing his memories for three years, he got a taste of what it was like to be stricken with poverty and in addition got married to someone he loved and has a beautiful younger sister. Because he couldn't disappear quietly like when it was just him, he decided to tell them of his status at a more relaxed time so they won't be too shocked and estrange themselves from him. "Mr. Klein, are you sure you have the right person? Because this is Adair Huxley, and I can assure you he doesn't come from a wealthy family or is affiliated with a
