I'm Adair Huxley

Halsey's eyes fluttered open. She expected to feel the excruciating pain inside her head as usual but to her surprise, she felt fine. Even healthy.

She had fallen asleep in the middle of an argument between her brother and the corridor filled with people picking on them. Although she knew there wasn't much she could do, she still felt she could've been supportive by staying awake.

Being sucked into her world of self-pity that she failed to notice she was on an extremely comfortable bed and the room's temperature was just right.

Even the monitor above her head which kept beeping every second should've told her she was in a hospital ward.

"Halsey?" Adair, who had been thinking about his life all morning, called out to her the moment he sensed she was awake.

She gave no reply as she hadn't heard. Hence, he got up and walked towards her. Extending a finger, he touched her neck to feel her temperature. His cold finger transported her back to the hospital ward.

"Adair?" She called weakly, struggling to grasp his big hand.

Adair held her fragile hand gently, then he rubbed her head. "The surgery was a success and the doctor said you'll be fine."

Halsey batted her eyes a number of times as the words registered in her head. The surgery was a success? How did they afford the surgery?

Seeing the surprise on her face, Adair chuckled and caressed her head. "There's someone I saved her life some years ago when I still had my memories. She recognized me and volunteered to pay for your surgery."

Halsey's eyes became teary and before she knew it, tears spiraled down her cheeks.

"What is it? Does your head hurt? Hold on, I'll call the doctor." Adair said worriedly as he got up and walked out of the ward.

Halsey, who was merely shedding tears of joy, smiled tearfully when she saw him walk inside with the doctor.

"Does your head hurt?" The doctor asked, trying to touch her.

Halsey flinched and moved away from him. Due to her traumatic experience of being hit by everyone around her, she immediately shielded her face.

The doctor froze in fright, beads of perspiration trickling down his forehead. He had no idea who Adair was, but the instruction he received from the higher-ups was to do anything Adair wanted him to.

Adair frowned and sat beside Halsey on the bed, then moved her head to his chest. His eyes were firm as he said, "You no longer have to be scared of them, Halsey. Big brother will protect you."

"They'll hurt you too. Let's just leave the hospital now." Halsey muttered weakly.

Adair breathed out, his cold eyes settling on the doctor. The doctor who had been trying his best to minimize his presence in the room felt a chill run down his spine after being glanced at by Adair.

He didn't know why the teenager seemed to have such an air of superiority around him.

"The doctor will make sure you're fine and then we can leave the hospital. If you don't let him check what's wrong with you, we might end up staying in this hospital for more days. The hospital bills will rack up and we'll run into debts once again." Adair said in a mischievous tone.

Just like he expected, Halsey quickly looked up at me, her scalp going numb, "So the hospital bills won't rack up if he checks me and diagnoses me as fine?"

"Exactly." Adair nodded with a solemn look.

"So your friend also paid for the check-up, right?" Halsey asked again and didn't see the corners of Adair's lip curl into a smile.

He agreed with her regardless, "I also have some money with me. Before the doctor's done with you, I'll be back with your favourite foods."

His words quickly kept her in a good mood. Adair nodded at the doctor who quickly got to work. After confirming she was fine, he left the room in a haste.

"Go to sleep, and when you wake up, I'll be back with your favourite foods." Adair hummed softly, staring right into her eyes.

Halsey smiled broadly and quickly slept off. Adair covered her up properly before walking out of the ward.

Once outside, he leaned on the walls of the hospital corridor and closed his eyes. While the surgery was going on, his memories returned back to him.

He wasn't an 18 year old nobody. He was a thousand years old vampire lord who lost his memories in a battle with the enemy.

Most of his men had been killed off in the battle. Mustering every ounce of power in his body, he fought against the enemy and emerged victorious.

He woke up the next day in the slums with no memory of who he was. That was when Halsey's parents, whose house he was beside, saw him and took him in.

Being poor was a disease in this part of the world as the rich stomped down on anyone below them. And Halsey and her parents were part of the majority who died everyday thanks to the oppression of the rich.

"The world has changed ever since your disappearance." Sister who had been watching him from a distance, said.

He turned to look at her and smiled. "The rich and powerful become more rich and powerful and the poor keep dying everyday."

"Well, now that you have your memories back, I'm sure things can return back to being the way they used to." Sister smiled, her air of mystery now gone.

Iris Dame as the world knew her was a very close friend of Adair and a vampire as well. Adair had turned her hundreds of years ago. And because he was too busy fighting off the enemy with his men, he had appointed her to take his place in his absence.

Iris Dame was also a figure which only a few people knew about which included those in high authority. These people were either turned into vampires by her or by Adair.

They too knew there was someone Iris was loyal to, but had no idea what he looked like or who he was. However, they were fine with it.

Over the years, people only knew there was someone behind Iris Dame, but no one knew who it was or what he looked like. Soon, his existence slowly became a myth.
