Leo’s eyes fluttered open. He was dazed and he felt pains all over his body. His eyes were hurting as he looked at the light on the ceiling. His head began to hurt and he felt numb all over.

“Patient is awake. Vitals are normal now…” a voice was heard beside him. Startled, he tried turning his head to see who was talking. He could see a man wearing a lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck, though he couldn’t see his face clearly as his eyes were still hurting and his vision blurry.

“How are you feeling now Leonardo?” The doctor asked, with a slight smile on his lips.

“Alive at least. Where am I?” Leo inquired, his voice came out hoarse and pitchless as he looked around the room. He could actually tell that he was in a hospital but he wanted to know where.

“You are in Sky City’s Central Hospital,” He heard the doctor say, “You were involved in an accident, do you remember?” The doctor asked him.

“I…” Leo searched his brain for clues as to what led him to the position he was currently in. “I remember, seeing lightning and an explosion… a tube filled with electricity… then I blacked out…” He replied as he could vaguely remember anything.

The doctor wrote a few thing on his note. “It seems that the impact didn’t cause you any memory loss.” He said as he kept on jotting down on his note. “I’ll have to run some more tests. You suffered third degree burns all over and together with that impact you suffered while hitting that building, You should count yourself extremely lucky to be alive.” He commented, “For now, all you need is rest. To be honest with you, your burns won’t heal anytime soon and you’ll need a surgery but you’ll look totally different after that.” He gave him a look of sympathy.

Leo shut his eyes and a thought flashed in his brain jolting him up.“What about Dr. Cartel? What happened to him?” he asked.

The doctor looked confused at first before finally coming into realization. “Oh, you mean the CEO of THRL? He was taken to court by your guardian and he was asked to pay a fine and will probably be jailed but that depends on your situation.” He said.

Leo was both surprised and angry at the same time. ‘This is all my fault’ he thought to himself. He tried to sit upright but the sharp pain he felt on his back gave him second ideas.

“When am I gonna be discharged?” he asked glumly.

The doctor gave him a warm smile. “You should be able to walk in a two weeks. It’s been almost two months since you were here and you need time to recuperate. I don’t understand how you will be able to walk within two months after the accident but you seem to be healing very fast… unusually fast.” He hypothesized and began to ponder on Leo’s results.

Leo almost threw up when he heard the doctor claim that he had been in this hospital for almost two months. ‘So I’ve been in a coma for two months!? What about school? How am I even going to live? Will I be on a wheelchair? He said I’ll be able to walk but will I need crutches? My back hurts so much…’

Different negative thoughts ran through his head. He was dumbfounded and he began to shed tears. His actions had put both him and a renowned scientist in jeopardy.

Two weeks passed and he was discharged. He could actually walk properly but he was still supported by his aunt and Logan. He was bandaged all over, making him look like a walking mummy. Molly took him home and after making sure he was better, she made him rest.

She scolded him though. As a matter of fact, Leo could see that two months of anger never died down. When his friends heard that he was discharged, they were happy and they called him.

“Dude,” James said. “I gotta say when I watched that video of the accident, I already thought you were dead.” Tracy’s face was solemn. Leo could tell that she has been crying all along.

“If it weren’t for the fact that we heard you were alive, Tracy would’ve been no more.” Mason added.

Leo had his eyes wide opened in astonishment. He couldn’t believe Tracy would actually commit suicide because of him. Tracy rolled her eyes at Mason and smiled at him.

“It’s really good to have you back babe.” She said calmly with strong sense of relief and affection coming from her voice. Leo also smiled back. His face was still a little bit singed so his smile wasn’t so visible.

Suddenly, Tracy’s face changed from that of a calm little girl to a angry grandmother.

“And if you ever try something as stupid as that ever in you life, I will make life a living hell for you. You’ll suffer so much you’ll wish you were dead.” The smile on Leo’s face disappeared instantly and turned into fear. He couldn’t help but feel slightly afraid.

“Looks like you were burned so bad, that handsome face of yours is already gone.“ James joked. Tracy gave James a knock on the head.

“Ow. What did you do that for?” He asked, feeling wronged.

“We should be thankful that it’s only his face that’s gone and not Leo himself. Besides, even with his face burned, he’s more handsome than you are.” Tracy scolded James disdainfully and gave Leo her loving eyes when it came to how handsome he was. James was still rubbing his head from the pain. In reality, James was even more handsome than Leo when he didn’t have the accident. Now, his accident just made things worse. But there’s an African proverb that says that “when the kings palace that gets burned, beauty is being added to it.”

“We both know that’s not true.” He snickered. Mason and Leo laughed and the atmosphere was lively again.

They chatted all day before Leo finally laid himself to rest.

Leo wouldn’t be able to go to school for a while now since he couldn’t and he also didn’t want to scare the other kids away so he’ll have to learn at home. Self learning actually. He still kept on studying but he only studied his favorite subjects and school books. Logan came by a few times and gave him his notes and also kept him company. Logan had always visited Leo in the hospital every three days and he’ll always drop a flower or two. One from him and another one from Leo’s secret admirer, Jessica.

It was eight thirty in the morning and Leo had just woken up. He wanted to get up and take a leak so he prepared his mind for the usual pain he could feel when getting up and gritted his teeth only to stand up and not feel any pain at all!

He was surprised, It’s been a week since he got discharged and he never thought he had super healing abilities, even though the doctor hinted him on that. He tried raising his hand very high but he didn’t feel any pain… Ow. Okay he felt a little bit of pain but it was very little compared to what he felt a week ago.

He went towards the mirror and tried removing the bandages on his face only to see his face was almost as smooth as it was before the accident.

“What the hell!!…” he muttered. He couldn’t believe it. He removed part of the bandage on his right feet only for him to see an undamaged skin.

“Holy shit!” he was startled. ‘How’s this possible’ he thought to himself. He sat on his bed, gathered his thoughts and made a few conclusions. ’Firstly, Molly mustn’t know about this. Secondly, I needed to see Dr. Cartel. And lastly, I have to inform the trio… Logan included.’

As he was still thinking about the whole thing, he heard someone knock. “Come in.” he said as he quickly wrapped up his feet and face with the bandage and regained his composure. Molly walked in and she brought a tray of food with her.

“Good morning Leo.” She said cheerfully. She had already decided to accept the things that has happened and had forgiven him, although she still promises to ground him when this is all over.

He greeted her back and took the tray from her hands. He was starving but he had to brush his teeth first.

“How are you feeling now?” She asked as she rubbed his back.

“I’m okay.” He smiled. ‘Are you kidding me?! I’m more than okay’ he thought happily to himself but he didn’t display that huge amount of information. He quickly brushed his teeth and began eating. Molly sat by him, watching him. Several thoughts ran through her head and tears trickled down her face. When she heard about the accident, she fainted. When she woke up and they reminded her of what happened, she began to cry so much that she couldn’t sleep or go to work for two days straight. She felt motherly love for Leo and she felt that it was her responsibility to fill in the spot of his dead parents. Her learning of Leo’s accident and thinking he was dead, she felt that she didn’t just fail as an aunt but she failed as a mother. Little Kate didn’t want to see her mother cry so she replaced her mother’s responsibility at home… well, a little bit. She’s still too young for that.

A thought struck Leo so he decided to ask, “Aunt Molly,” he called.

“Yes sweetie.”

“Aren’t you gonna drop the charges against Dr. Cartel?” he asked. Her mood changed and she looked at the ground gloomily. Leo decided to explain the whole thing to her, “I was the one who introduced my idea to him. I was the one who told him not to go to the malfunctioning machine. He insisted but I didn’t allow him. If he was the one who had the accident, he would be in my position now and I’ll probably go to juvie for it. I didn’t want him to lose his life…”

“So you sacrificed your own?!” Molly interrupted him angrily. “Leo listen to yourself. I already told you that this project of yours wouldn’t get anywhere and I already said I was going to assist you but you involved a scientist and took a big risk that almost cost you your life. Now look what that’s gotten you. You look like barbecue now.” She said, breaking into tears.

Leo was actually about to laugh when she said barbecue but seeing her cry made him feel guilty.

“Leo, don’t you know how delicate your life is? You are the only child of your parents and both of them are gone. I lost my brother Leo, your father, do you think I’ll forgive myself and spare anybody if I lose you? Do you?” She said, still crying. He could feel her pain and he thought about it deeply before hugging her.

“I’m sorry I worried you and everyone. But I’ll be fine. At least I’m still alive.” He said trying to cheer his crying aunty up. She was still crying and he was still wondering how he was going to deal with the current predicament that should leave little worry but at the same time, great curiousity. ‘I need to see Dr. Cartel. And I need to do that urgently.’ He thought to himself

It’s been five days since Leo learnt that he had super healing. He was no longer restricted to his room and could walk around and attend classes. But he was still bandaged all over though, in order to keep his healing abilities a secret. Logan came by his house and walked him to school. He had been doing this for Leo for two days now and he tries to support Leo when he’s about to fall. Leo had all of his face covered with bandages, except for his eyes and nostrils. He wasn’t using crutches since the doctor said his back was not in any way damaged, which happened to be extremely shocking to him. When they got to school, people gave Leo different looks. Looks of fear, anxiety and pity. Some of them were even murmuring about him. “Who’s that guy covered in bandages? He looks like an Egyptian mummy.” A guy laughed. The person beside him gave him a look of disdain. “Aren’t always aware of your surroundings?! That’s Leo, the new guy in our school. He got involved in an accid

Dr. Cartel led Leo towards an elevator in his office. This elevator, unlike the others was a private elevator. Leo was surprised and usually disgusted by the fact that some rich people decide to make themselves a private elevator instead of using the general one. Seeing the irritated look on his face, Dr. Cartel smiled. “This elevator leads to a special place, a place that not many people in the organization have access to.” He said as he pressed a code to open the elevator. Leo nodded and followed him inside. This elevator was built to go to just one floor, in the building. After entering the verification code, he pushed a small red button on the panel. This button looked like a red arrow pointing downwards. After pushing this button, the elevator began to descend. “What I’m about to show you,” Dr. Cartel said, expressionlessly, “Must be between us.” He then gave Leo a firm look. Leo nodded and Dr. Cartel continued. “What you saw inside the Lightning absorber, was the GE-176 p

Leo was walking down the street towards his house, deep in thought about what Dr. Cartel hypothesized. He was having a feeling of extreme change, like he was no longer sure who he was anymore. Imagine being an extraordinary person and having powers beyond the human scope. He never even thought about it, or expected it. He kept on pondering on Dr. Cartel’s hypothesis. “You were struck by lightning and burned by the fire from the explosion. According to my research, If you were to have powers, it should be lightning related, since lightning struck you first when the GE-176 exploded on your body. Also given that the compound was already charged up, you should have lightning affinity. It's like the compound already found its catalyst before fusing with your body.” Leo recalled Dr. Cartel's hypothesis. He was still bewildered and worried about the troubles his powers would cause him. ‘I really have super powers!?’ He thought to himself, trying to wrap his head around it all. Leo recalled f

BANG! The back door of the van was kicked open by the two robbers, who aimed their guns at the policemen scattered in front of them and opened fire like hell. AAAAAH! The robbers yelled as they fired at will. They had the money bags in their arms. The bigger one was shooting and leaving the scene slowly while the other guy was giving him cover fire. Some civilians were on the scene so Leo ran as fast as he could to get those people away from the scene and prevent them from being hit by stray bullets. A huge gunfight broke out and the policemen could barely find space to shoot them back. The two robbers were using submachine guns while the cops were just using pistols. One of the policemen went to the car and used the radio to request reinforcements, but by the time reinforcements will arrive, the robbers would’ve escaped by then. Most of the cops were hit by the bullets but none of them died, they were only injured. The two robbers quickly rushed into a nearby res

“Hey Leo,” James greeted cheerfully. Tracy called him into her room to see Leo, “I can see you’re looking good. Wow, smooth face and handsome as always…” James commended Leo. Leo closed his eyes and shook his head with resignation. Tracy just face palmed and was frustrated with how foolish James could be. It hadn’t dawned on James that Leo shouldn’t be that ‘handsome’ yet. Tracy and Leo gave him irritating looks. Seeing this, James at this point became confused. “What?!” He asked while searching his brain for what he said wrong, “I’m only complimenting Leo on how handsome he… wait you shouldn’t be handsome yet, you should still be barbecue. You should still be wrapped up…” He blurted as he realized what was happening. Leo rolled his eyes. ‘Why must you always say barbecue!?’ He thought to himself. “Did you get a surgery?” James asked. Tracy decided to leave the talking to Leo because if she replies to James, she’ll either insult him or hit him for asking a stupid question. Leo si

“You’re kidding right?” Logan said with astonishment. Leo explained what had happened the previous day to him and Logan couldn’t believe him. It must have been really absurd to hear your friend has super powers. Leo looked straight and didn’t reply him. Logan then realized that he was dead serious. “So you basically control fire now?!” He asked, his eyes still wide open with shock. “That’s what it looks like,” Leo replied calmly. Logan gave him a doubtful look. He wanted to see him in action with his own eyes, but that was not a curiosity Leo was ready to satisfy at the moment… at least not in school. “It feels like I have a connection to fire, like something inside the fire wants to communicate with me.” He explained. Logan just gave him a more shocked look. Seeing this, Leo decided to stop talking about it. They got to class and he sat in front of Leo as always. They had economics and Mrs. Avery was writing on the board. She got to the class ahead of them in preparation for a n

Sitting on his bed meditating, with legs crossed, hands on his legs and closed eyes, Leo recited a mantra that came to his mind as he thought of mantras to use. His breathing was slow and even. He had been sitting like that for almost an hour. Instead of trying to control his emotions and keeping his calm, he wanted to re-establish the connection he had with his flame powers. “I am fire. The fire is within me. I am one with the flames, born from the ashes of war and strife, to rise as a true born god. The god of fire. The Crimson phoenix. I am…” he kept on repeating those words. At some point, it felt like he wasn’t the only one saying those words. He could hear a female voice reciting those words with him, but anytime he tried to focus on the voice, he didn't seem to hear it anymore. His body felt warmer and it was refreshing and felt nice. He felt energized and high. He also had a feeling that he was finally establishing a connection to something bigger than him. He couldn’t pin

Bouncing the ball repeatedly, Quincy was sweating badly and his breathing was heavy. He was tired and his heart kept thumping faster than a machine. He was playing with all his strength and he was already at his limit. Leo on the other hand hadn’t broken a sweat at all, mainly because he wasn’t actually putting in too much effort. Quincy had a habit of always wanting more. Despite Leo beating him with seventy-two points, he was still resisting and his will didn’t waver at all. He also began to spot a pattern in Leo’s moves and he was adapting to it. However, adapting to superhuman abilities is almost an impossible feat for an ordinary human. Quincy bounced the ball and headed towards Leo who used his super-speed eyes to see through Quincy’s dribble. Everything suddenly became extremely slow in his eyes and Leo smirked, ‘I can do this all day’ He thought. He was thinking about hitting the ball off Quincy’s hand and was just about to spring into action, but Quincy surprised h

The match finally came to an end, with Elian Comprehensive high emerging victorious with 73 points while Sky Hills high had 19 points. Alexander was so shaken that he dropped to the ground on his knees when the game ended. They already lost their will to win on the third quarter. All they just wanted to do was to not make the distance in their scores not too wide, so as not to get too embarrassed. Even then, after playing basketball for three years, he has never seen a team with this much understanding and cohesion between them. Their teamwork was just to tight, and their methods were extraordinary. Logan and his team cheered for themselves as they were happy that they won. Well, Leo and the remaining third year students weren’t all too excited, and they maintained their cool head. According to Mrs. Hale, Elian Comprehensive would have no problem against the school’s like Sky Hills High, Bennighton Academy, and St. Peter’s High school, as their team was much more stronger. Eve

    A Comeback but Defeat.

The whistle for the third quarter blared and the game began. Throughout the game, Tyler and Jackson had been the ones giving them threats and pressuring them. So it would be normal if the players of Sky Hills high put more effort into restraining these two players. However, they didn't do that. Logan ran towards the hoop and suddenly stopped to give instructions to his teammates, however, he got double-teamed by Harris and Luke. Tyler who had the ball pushed forward and passed to Jackson, who was about to receive the ball but it got stolen by Callum. The latter smiled as he passed Jackson by while performing high bounces as he rushed to the opponent’s hoop. Collins stopped him but the latter had the advantage in speed and agility. Collins was a center, but he wasn’t exactly a weak one. Instead, his agility was just lacking a bit. His strength though, could match that of Alexander. Callum did a crossover dribble and Collins fell for it. Going past Elian Comprehensive high’s line

Alexander clenched his fists and grit his teeth as he watched Jackson and his teammates jubilate a little. Just as quick, he calmed down and smiled. “That shall be your last score in this game. I assure you.” He muttered as he received the ball from his teammate, Luke and began pushing forward. It was now their turn to attack. He bounced high repeatedly while running towards the opponent’s hoop but he was just about to get blocked by Tyler. He stopped advancing and began bouncing with his right hand, while holding Tyler back with his left. He used this to buy himself time as he assessed the situation. Too bad, all his teammates were blocked. He saw this as him having no choice but to shoot from where he was. Meanwhile, this was all within Logan’s speculation and he quickly made a quick hand sign to Collins, who nodded and they began moving. Jackson joined the fray too and he took his position three meters in front of Alexander. Logan walked to block Luke, while Collins took his

    Starting Game.

Loud cheers could be heard inside the basketball court as fans cheered and cheerleaders danced and did a great performance. The players sat on designated benches and watched the performance. After that, the commentator did a quick review of the teams playing and introduced them. Just after that, the game for the day was to commence. “And finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for, the first match of the Sky City Inter high cup. A game between Sky Hills high school…” he said and the fans shouted at the top of their voices to support the team. At the same time, the players of the team rose to their feet and did a quick meeting among themselves. “…and as for the opposing team, a school located in the middle of Sky City, Elian Comprehensive High school.” The commentator introduced. Leo’s teammates got up from their seats and they did a quick meeting among themselves. “Alright boys. This is the moment. No dawdling, no delays, no bad plays. We’ve train so much for this day, so

Molly drove down to the court and she saw the fully dressed Leo sitting on one of the benches. She was blue to notice the little bruises on his face and she could tell that this wasn’t due to training alone. “Leo, are you alright? You seem injured.” She said as she approached him after parking her car. Leo didn’t say anything to respond as he was deep in thought. If there were people like Mr. Zack in the world who had techniques like that but twisted brains, who knew what would happen to the world. He felt like he was really weak, even when he just thought himself strong. Molly bent beside him and inquired about what was wrong with him but Leo was unresponsive. Molly noticed that she was being ignored but she felt like for Leo to be like that, something must’ve happened to him. Also, she noticed some red points on his body, some of which had cuts and bruises on them. “What happened to to? Who did this to you?” She asked with a concerned tone as she op

    A brawl with Mr. Zack

Mr. Zack braced himself for Leo to make a move. His brain was on the game he was supposed to play with him and nothing else. He focused his eyes on Leo and observed his every movement, no matter how little. The latter lifted the ball and Mr. Zack expected him to bounce the ball and come at him. However, what the boy did next shocked him. BOOM! Instead of bouncing the ball, Leo threw it against the iron fence. The force caused a dent on the wall and the ball was stuck on it. Mr. Zack stared at Leo with astonishment. It takes tremendous amount of force to cause a dent so deep on the iron fence. The dent was so deep that the ball got stuck in it. He looked at the ball and then at Leo. “I said… not interested.” Leo said with a deep and threatening voice. Mr. Zack gave a disappointed face and shook his head. “Too bad…” he said and cracked his knuckles. Leo frowned as he sensed a killing intent and he put up a defensive stance. Like as if h

    Confrontation.

It was 4 pm and Leo could be seen in a street basketball court. He was panting heavily as he bent slightly and supported his hands on his knees. Sweat was dripping down his body like water. His silky black hair was extremely wet and ran down his face, covering his ears and almost covering his eyes. He caught his breath for a few more minutes before setting all the barriers for himself again and picking up the ball. Leo was training his maneuverability without using his superpowers. He thought that if he could improve as a human, he would exponentially improve with his superpowers too. To do this, he borrowed some traffic cones and barriers from the police station nearby and his school before starting his training. His aunt promised to pick him up when he felt he was done. He arranged the cones in different places and he would do is bounce the ball and go past all those cones and barriers to dunk the ball without touching any of them. Where did he get that idea? It was Mrs. Hale.

Leo was pretty much out of ideas for a lie to tell, and Logan? His brain was running fast and he was looking for a lie that she would buy and that wouldn’t embarrass him too much. After waiting but not getting any response from both boys, Mrs. Hale went on with her complaints. “I don’t have any idea what happened to both of you, but I can tell something fishy is going on.” She implied and leaned closer with her elbows resting on the table, “So I’m asking for an explanation from both of you.” She said. Leo’s expression didn’t change and he instead was waiting for Logan to come up with an idea while he would just play along. He looked at his partner and the other side gave him a look that said it all… ‘I have no idea what to say.’ “Umm…” Leo took the initiative to speak, “I was just too angry at the time and I broke down… emotionally.” Leo revealed. However, before he closed it, he sighed. “Do you really have to do this all the time?” He asked as he rolled his eyes and closed the locker door, which revealed the glum-looking Logan behind it. He had sensed that his friend was there. “Why the long face?” He inquired again. Logan who leaned against the lockers with his arms folded stood normally and turned to walk the other way. “We lost the game.” He said. Leo quickly used his padlock to lock his locker before catching up with his friend
