Chapter Seven

Monk Pat and Sir Herbert spent a few minutes on the temple while he was ordered to have his eyes closed. A great revelation was made to him during the short period of their eyes closed. Sir Herbert was surprised with the revelation. Monk Pat talked to him and they had a plan on how to go about everything. It was later in the day that Sir Herbert was released to go home and he board the flight back to the capital city.

The subsequent day, Sir Herbert returned to work at UltraDope. A few minutes after he touched down in his office, his phone rang. It was a call from the president. He already knew what he wanted to discuss with him. He walked into his office.

“You will be the one that will execute the child at the court tomorrow. I have talked to the nurse. Concerning the mother, they will take care of that,” Humphrey said.

Sir Herbert looked into his eyes without a reaction. He never knew that he would be killing the mother too however the statement already confirmed that. Humphrey gazed at him yearning for a response. At that moment, Sir Herbert wouldn’t be interested in turning it down because he wouldn’t want the child dead if truly he would be the one to put an end to the dictatorship Humphrey’s family had subjected the country to.

“Ok. President. I will carry out the responsibility with utmost alacrity.”

Humphrey nodded and ordered the secretary to get them drinks. Sir Herbert wasn’t on Humphrey side anymore. Their relationship seemed to have taken a turn since yesterday after meeting with the monk. He blamed himself to have been used to achieve his selfish desire. Sir Herbert as he had always known didn’t put up any smile. He did as the president want and drink from the wine that they filled his cup with.

When they were done enjoying, Sir Herbert returned to his office. It seemed Hemingway had been at the entrance of his office for a while, despite the effort of the police persuading him to have his seat, he turned it down. When he saw Sir Herbert walked gently out of the president’s office, he knew something was wrong. He went to meet him en route.

“What’s wrong?”

“I am fine,” Sir Herbert retorted with his head tucked.

Minister Hemingway knew he wasn’t in good disposition but he wouldn’t want to further question him against his will.

“I heard you will be the one carrying out the slaughtering of the dark fated child at the court tomorrow,” Hemingway said.

“Yes. I am.”

“Are you really going ahead with it?”

“Why won’t I? Perhaps, that’s my duty and I have paid my allegiance to the president. If you think you will do it better, maybe you should talk to the president.”

Sir Herbert began to pace as he made the statement. Hemingway paused and looked at him as he walked out of his presence. He was jiggling his head looking at his rear. Hemingway was mad with the fact that he had chosen to take up the responsibility. The monk would also be appearing at the court tomorrow. He will witness the execution of the child.

When the day of the execution came, it was a different mood filled day. Diverse expression were being depicted as people were trooping into the court. The Supreme Court wasn’t that far from the entrance of UltraDope which made it easier for the people of Carten who wanted to witness the event to have access to.

The box in which the dark fated child would be placed in and pierced had been prepared. Everyone was seated and the president was also seated. Humphrey had the total control of the high court judges and they had made a decision before coming to the public. Monk Pat was also in attendance. While Humphrey gazed at the public space, he saw him. He and the monk looked at each other for a while.

The head judge came forward to the people and read the fate that the child came to the world with in order to justify their act. Sir Herbert brought forward the child which the sword that will be used to kill him being held from behind by one of the army men. Sir Herbert dropped him in the box and collected the sword.

Sir Herbert stood and the final judgement was about to be made. He saw the monk in the crowd. His face looked indifference. Sir Herbert also didn’t make a movement with his face.

“Now kill him.”

Sir Herbert raised the sword and thrust it in the box. It was an emotional moment as everyone was looking with a teary eyes. Sir Herbert’s face was frowned. There wasn’t a sign that he was emotional. As the blood was coming from beneath the box president Humphrey felt a great relief that sojourn his mind. He was nodding his head after the child had been killed. Sir Herber gave the sword track to the army and they cleaned the blood from it body and the white linen was placed on the box.

Sir Herbert carried the box out of the court as everywhere was silence. Forthwith people began to exit the court, murmur began to erupt. The monk also walked out. They had planned it. The monk wouldn’t be leaving the jurisdiction of UltraDope at the moment.

Sir Herbert with few of his men went to the ground where the child will be buried. He demanded that it should be left there for a while that he would come back to bury it as it is against tradition to bury a child whose mother was still alive without the blessing of the mother.

Sir Herbert was walking through the corridor back to his office when he saw a stretcher being pushed out of the medical department. He had the reminiscent of the statement of the president that the medical department will take care of the mother. He predicted right - she was going to be killed.
