8 Ungrateful Family

It was evening. Aidan, his mother, and his younger sister were sitting in the mansion garden.

Aidan's mother, Mrs. Frederick had called Aidan to hear what happened in the past three years of him being away from home.

“ Aidan,” Mrs. Frederick called out as she rested her hand on the table before them.“ What exactly happened? Because if I can recall, you told me you are married, but the lady you came with had left. So what are you saying?” she inquired.

“ Hmm,” Aidan sighed as he tried hard not to remember what Kate and her family had done to him.

“ Big bro,” Catherine called for his attention and asked.“ Where is your wife and who is she?”

Aidan chuckled and responded.“ Her name is Kate, a poor man's daughter who lost her father a few years ago because of kidney cancer, as I once told you before I left. I came in contact with her when I went for a walk outside the estate.” he began explaining how he met her.

“ I met this young lady bitterly weeping by the roadside, and I felt sorry for her. And I asked her what happened and she narrated everything…”

“ Here is the juice, ma'am.” a butler interrupted Aidan as he arranged three glasses of cups on the table filled with juice drinks in it.

“ Thank you,” Mrs. Frederick appreciated it with a slight smile on her face.

“ Welcome, ma'am.” the butler responded and bowed down respectfully.“ Please, let me know if you need anything else,” he added.

“ Alright, I would do that if the need arises,” said Mrs. Frederick and the butler bowed down once more before leaving.

“ What happened next, big bro?” Catherine quickly asked after the butler had disappeared from the scene.

“ You so much love stories, Catherine.” Mrs. Frederick said teasingly.

“ It isn't bad after all.” Catherine responded and rolled her eyes.“ Please, continue from where you stopped.” she averted her gaze to Aidan with anticipation to hear more of his saga.

“ Okay,” Aidan muttered.“ It turned out that her father died because they couldn't raise money for his treatment, which resulted in this. For that reason, I promised to help out, but I kept my identity a secret. This was because I fell in love with her.

“ However, I don't want her to love me because of my wealth, as other ladies do; I was searching for true love.

“ Kate took me to her house after I begged her to. In this small house, both Kate, her younger brother, and her parents live. So, I met with Kate's mom and told her my intention concerning Kate, though my identity remained hidden.

“ At first, Kate declined because we just met and we knew nothing about each other. But when she saw the sincerity in me, she decided to accept it.

“ However, after Kate accepted to marry me, I lied to them that I have fifty thousand dollars which I have been saving for a couple of years. Which I was intending to pay for her dowry.”

“ It's bad to lie to someone,” Catherine advised and Aidan smiled.

“ I know, but I just have to do it to get what I want,” he replied to her and she nodded.

“ But,” Aidan began.“ there was a condition attached to the fifty thousand dollars.”

“ Which was…?” Catherine curiously asked.

“ I demanded that they give me a room in their house so that I and my wife can stay inside until I'm able to secure a job for myself.

Mrs. Emily, Kate's mother, hesitated at first, and later accepted, knowing that fifty thousand dollars is also a huge amount of money.

“ But I intended to secretly take this family out of poverty after discovering that Kate was running a small business. I also wanted to test how faithful my wife will be to me despite my lack of a home.

I bought a few cheap clothes, and I packed into the room I was given by Mrs. Emily, which of course I informed you all, even though I didn't tell you full details about it.” he explained.

“ Yeah, you told us and also promised us that you were coming back after a couple of three years. However, he also promised to be visiting, but you didn't keep this promise.” Mrs. Frederick complained.

“ Yes, those were your promises.” Catherine concord with her mom.

“ I'm sorry that I couldn't keep my promise,” Aidan apologized and they nodded in forgiveness.

Aidan began explaining again as his face was besieged by four expectant ears to know what happened to him in the past three years of being absent from home.

“ After I have paid her dowry, I advised Kate to plead for her mother to give her twenty-five thousand dollars out of the dowry, so she can add to her business, which she did.

With that little amount, Kate saw changes in her business. She began getting connections from big companies. Though I was responsible for this progress, it was still a secret I hid from her.

“ I almost became a slave to my mother-in-law because I was the only one doing the house chores; I never bothered.”

“ Huh? You were doing house chores?” Catherine widened her eyes in shock and Aidan nodded.

He continued.“ As Kate's business kept growing, I advised her to at least build a more comfortable house for her family, which she did.

As time passed, she got a car for herself. This happened when she started receiving contracts from my company.

" It was barely two years when all these things were happening. Both Kate and her family were happy and surprised to see the progress in her business that started like a joke. And I was also pleased with it.

This made Kate love me more because I kept helping her in any area I could help.

“ However, Kate wanted to buy a car for me, but I declined, and she ended up buying it for her younger brother, Felix. Probably, a birthday gift. I never wanted anything that cost much.

“ Now, it has been three years and Kate presently owns a big company, the CEO of her company. And I was planning to open up by the end of this very month and tell them who I was. Unknowingly, she was planning something terrible.”

Aidan took a deep breath and shut his eyes as he fought the urge not to let out tears from his eyes.

“ What was the terrible thing?” Catherine curiously inquired.

“ She asked me for a divorce,” he announced.

“ What?” both Catherine and her mom exclaimed in chorus with confusion.

“ Why will she do that, after everything you have done to her family?” Mrs. Frederick raged, but Aidan remained silent without uttering a word.

He knew well that Kate would surely come to beg him for mercy, and that's when he would show her the bad side of him.

Catherine and her mom scolded Aidan for making such a foolish plan.

In the end, Aidan told them not to bother themselves because he was going to handle it.
