He was much weaker than he had been. He knew he needed to level up but he did not want to use his magic.
He could no longer feel Asmodeus' presence in his mind. He could only assume the powerful demon had returned to Hades, where he belonged. Asmodeus was the only demon who could traverse between the realm of the mundanes and Hades. But in order to remain in the realm of the mundanes, he needed a host. That was something Alastair had provided for him. But that was all in the past, or so Alastair thought.Alastair dragged the cart towards the shade where a large man was standing with some soldiers. The marketplace was usually busy at that time of the day. Soldiers patrolled the marketplace and extra security was erected, for it was the closest the civilians could get to the royal palace. Alastair looked at the palace from a distance, its large and strong walls gazing right back at him.He made a lot of memories within those walls, but those days, those memories only brought him pain and so he stopped thinking about them."Alastair, it is good to see you today." The large man, Husk, said to Alastair, grabbing his shoulder and giving it a light shake."I have the weapons with me," Alastair said to the man who nodded, looking over his shoulders to the cart. Alastair had taken up a trade as a swordsmith since his banishment, and in all of sixteen years, he didn't use his magic, not even once."Ah yes. But I am afraid I will not be buying them today. Not anymore." Husk said, bowing his head in supposed regret."I do not understand. What changed your mind?" Alastair asked him. He wanted to know."You see, the war with the Mintovals has taken another turn. These weapons are no longer needed there. If only you could make something that was, let's say, magical. Perhaps then, we can resume our trade?"And yes, Husk knew who he was exactly."You know I do not do that anymore," Alastair replied slowly and Husk nodded."I am ready to buy the swords, but only at half the price. That way, I can pay a mage to enchant the weapons and sell them at a higher price.""Fine." Alastair agreed and collected payment. He wasn't going to get another buyer anyways. All through the years, he had limited his interactions with People. He did not want anyone to know who he was. They might stone him if they did.Alastair returned to his workshop and kicked the unfortunate chair on his way. His life was terrible and as he grabbed a bottle of wine, he realized it was empty."Fuck!"He cussed as he slammed the bottle on the ground but just at that moment, a young girl dashed into his shop. Alastair looked as she hid underneath his table, shushing him as he tried to speak."The bloody thief couldn't have gotten far. Find that wretch!"Alastair heard some men telling themselves as they rushed towards his shop. One them, the large one looked at him and shot him a glare. Alastair scoffed. But then, he too left the scene. The girl waited there for a while before she slowly stepped out and heaved a sigh. Alastair was surprised. She was about fifteen or so, with Long yellow hair and brown eyes. She wore a pair of trousers and a boy's shirt, and save for her hair, one would have thought she was a lad. She had bumped herself into Alastair as she stood up."What just happened here? What are you doing in my shop?" Alastair asked but she looked at him and scoffed."Easy, old man. You don't need to be so fussy all about it." She said and proceeded to walk out of the shop, touching one of his swords as she did. She watched carefully as she ran off.Alastair scoffed at her audacity and then proceeded to bring out the money bag Husk had given to him.But it was missing!Alastair searched all around him, but he could not find the money. Then he remembered the girl."Bloody Thief!"He yelled and proceeded to go looking for her and as he did, he brushed his hand on the same sword she had touched, and his entire body froze. He felt a presence he had not felt in over sixteen years, the great darkness he had managed to suppress all this while. Alastair shook as Asmodeus' presence got even stronger in his mind while his touch lingered on the sword. He quickly removed his hand, breathing heavily as he did. What just happened? What was going on? The girl, yes. It had something to do with her. Alastair dashed out of the shop and ran into the streets. He had to find her and he had to do it quickly!Bells. The cathedral rang it's large bells which could be heard all across the capital. It was time for the priests to make prayers to the gods, and all were expected to be inside their houses. All through the day, Alastair had searched for the mysterious girl that had evoked the dark magic he'd tried so hard to contain. He was not especially having much luck in finding her. Alastair walked from one region of the capital to the other and wondered if he was doing the right thing. There was a pretty big chance the pickpocket had already left the capital, but nevertheless, he kept trying. Along the way, he was tempted to use a tracking spell. Things were so much easier when he still practiced his magic. He would have been able to find her in a much shorter time. All mundanes left a somewhat magical trail behind where ever they went. Mages picked up those trails and use them to track people.Alastair stopped in front of the cathedral, stretched forth his hands, and opened them. He gazed
Alastair gasped as he opened his eyes, the screams of the people around him echoing through the vast space that seemed to spread across an ethereal plane. He breathed heavily as he looked around, not knowing whether he was still alive or dead. Then a mage ran straight towards him, screaming from the fire that was burning its flesh. Alastair raised his hands to protect his face from the screaming mage but the mage passed right through him.Was it a dream? Dreams did not feel that way to him. He seemed alive and conscious but still, it was not quite a vision. He began to walk slowly along the cold, dusty ground which looked clearer than crystal to the naked eye. Each step evoked a sensation of cold and a mass of dust. Alastair kept walking until he saw a smoky figure ahead. He looked closely and immediately recognized who it was.Asmodeus!Alastair felt a wave of anger come upon him and he ran towards the figure. The figure just stood still as he approached, but when he was about to gra
The sorcerer stood outside the large space just anterior to Alastair's house and he watched as the Vines crept up the walls of his house. Then, as the largest branch of the creeping vines wrapped around the door and pulled it away, Cara screamed again, clinging closer to Alastair that time. Outside, he could see a sorcerer standing, hands stretched sideways with drops of blood hitting the ground at intervals. Alastair had an idea of what to do, so he grabbed Cara's hand tightly."We will leave this place now. Get ready." He said to her and she nodded. Not that she really understood what he was talking about, but for the sake of that very moment, she just did what her mind told her to do.Alastair sighed and in one swift movement, attempted to dash out of the house, holding Cara's hand. But the sorcerer standing outside his house suddenly controlled a swarm of large, climbing vines at them. The swarm quickly United into a large mass and hurled at them, but Alastair formed a large sh
The journey had been a perilous one for Cara, dragging a man with such weight was not an easy feat. But she was not someone who could leave her friends behind. Not that she actually considered Alastair as a friend though, but he had saved her life more times than she could probably count, and that had to mean something. The walk to the outskirts of the capital ended in a terrible shape for both of them and along the way, Cara hoped they did not encounter any more sorcerers. How would she fight them? She was defenseless and she would have to fight for Alastair as well. She was not sure she could do that. So when she was finally able to get to the house he'd shown her in the vision, she knocked like her life depended on it.It took a moment before the locks of the door gave way and the hinges creaked. The door opened and standing inside was a rather large woman in a green dress, holding candlelight in her hand with sharp green eyes. When she saw Alastair, she gasped and the candle fel
Neither of them spoke about what happened. As Alastair Led the way through the thick forest with Cara walking absentmindedly behind him, he wanted to bring up the conversation about the tremendous amount of power she had displayed earlier. He wanted to read her mind, to see what was going on there but that felt like a violation of her privacy. He couldn't do that. They could have taken a horse, infact, Alastair had found one which belonged to a man named Osmond but he had insisted Alastair paid fifty gold pieces for it. It was a bloody rip-off but old Osmond was considering how desperate they looked and how late at night it was.But Alastair refused to purchase the horse. They decided to walk instead. Besides, the gods were wise for creating mankind with a pair of legs.So as they kept on walking, Alastair comforted himself with the chatter of the owls that filled the air. He'd always sort of loved the creatures, although most people found them extremely creepy.Alastair took another p
Whimpers and soft cries woke him up. He sat up slowly and looked at Cara who was crying in her sleep. Her body was smoky, and the space around her was hot, very hot. Alastair slowly approached her. Tears dropped from the sides of her face as she kept on dreaming. The space was becoming even hotter and he knew he needed to wake her up. But when he touched her hand, he suddenly gasped as he got sucked into her nightmare.Fire.A village was burning and the fire was spreading rapidly. People ran as best they could, mother's trying to keep their children safe. It was not dragon's flames, it was something else. The fire had a source and he needed to find Cara at that moment. Perhaps that was what she feared, the nightmare. Perhaps that was her village getting destroyed.A woman bumped into him as he staggered through the crowd. It was getting more difficult to navigate through as more people kept pouring out. Something had formed an invisible barrier around the entire village, preventin
The sun rose up in all its glory as Alastair and Cara descended down the hill that led to the Elderien's keep. Like she always maintained, she was silent throughout the rest of the walk. But that time, Alastair did not want to bring up the issue that she just returned from the dead. She had something powerful within her and perhaps not pushing her was the right thing to do at that moment. They continued to descend further and took the little path which cut through a little bush-path. As it was early in the morning, no one was seen along the way. The walk continued in silence until Cara suddenly decided to break the silence."I died, did I not?" She started, Alastair looking at her she spoke."When I fell from the cliff, I died, right?" She asked again."Yes. You did. You do not remember?" Alastair asked her. A fly suddenly buzzed across her face and she smacked it with her palm. The buzzing always irritated her and she found bees even worse."I remember falling. I remember feeling li
He looked down on them both and then crunched, his bones cracking as he did. He slowly took Alastair's face in his hand and looked at him."You have grown thinner over the years. Perhaps life hasn't treated you well?" The old man said and Cara watched as Alastair sobbed."Master...""You should not have come back here Alastair." The old man said and stood up, walking away from him."I know, master Orion. But I just need you to take her in. She is a mage and she needs your wisdom." Alastair said and Orion looked at Cara."You risked your life to bring her to me. Who is she? Your daughter?" Orion asked but Alastair did not reply. Then, he directed his gaze towards Cara."What is your name, child?""Cara." "And you are a mage?"" He says so." Cara said and looked at Alastair. "Hm." Orion added and walked away."Throw Alastair out of this city...""But master Orion, the judgement was passed!" Blaize objected. But Orion continued"...take the child to the Inyens. They will tell us what we
***Final Chapter***The monster hurled at the ship with a force so great that its punch pushed the ship backward. They were lucky not to have sustained a tear because Alastair and Blaize had formed a shield to block the punch. The shield, however, shattered immediately upon impact. The ship groaned and tilted from side to side, and what came next were screams from the crew as they fell into the sea. The captain struggled to find her balance, however, that was proving difficult. The ship groaned again and tilted to another side, shaking the captain's grip off her sword with which she had stabbed the deck. She screamed as she glided towards the sea, which at that time was already being occupied by monsters that looked like snakes. There was a multitude of them, and their hisses could be heard. They had killed the members of the crew that fell into the sea.As the captain was about to fall overboard, Blaize created a shield that blocked her path and pulled her back into the ship. She exch
"Set sail!"The captain's voice rang through the entire ship as men busied themselves with their jobs. The crew members ran Helter skelter as they tried to get the ship running, and in no time, they did. The ship roared as it sailed on the sea, a sight that sent shivers down Cara's body For Alastair, he just stood beside her and watched other members of the crew as they worked tirelessly. The captain was no longer with them. She was busy shouting orders, screaming at the men, and cursing them as they worked. Considering the fact that she was much smaller than most of the men on the ship, it was a funny sight to see.She soon sent Alastair a gaze and nodded to him. Alastair returned the gesture. As soon as the captain looked away, Alastair smiled softly. The time was finally approaching, and there was nothing to stop destiny from unfolding. He was still lost in thoughts when he suddenly began to feel like there was a pair of eyes looking at him.It was the same feeling he had gotten b
"Stand firm. Widen your stance and fix yourself to the ground. Strike with intent."Alastair instructed Cara as she sparred against him. Her moves had gotten better already but they still needed some more work. She groaned and struck Alastair, putting in so much of her energy that she tripped and fell down when Alastair made a false move."Predict where I will be. It will be what you need most of the time. You need to see the bigger picture when you are dealing with an opponent. Stand up and come at me again."Alastair instructed and Cara obeyed. She was past the stage of grumbling. She knew she needed to become stronger for what was coming. She charged and did her best to predict Alastair's moves. But they were too advanced for her. However, Alastair did not hold back. If she was to fulfill her destiny, she needed to become better than he was. Alastair decided to do a move to throw her off balance but Cara suddenly blocked it.Alastair was surprised. He pushed a bit further and intro
"Why don't you put down the crossbow and we can talk this through like adults?" Alastair said to the captain who scoffed at his guts. Her eyes were blaring with anger, and the only thing in her eyes other than anger was turmoil, pain, and regret. She steadied the crossbow in her hand and fixed her gaze upon Cara. Her eyes never left her. It seemed like she could remember what happened that day, the fire that suddenly blasted them all apart. She could remember the smell of burnt flesh which filled the air, saturating every part of the house. She could remember the smell of her own flesh and the moment that hit her, her face twitched a little. She took a deep breath and pointed the crossbow at Cara. Alastair did not want to use his magic against her for he knew they would be needing her help if they were to get to the isle of mists. But how the captain survived was still a mystery. He was certain she had died."You! You did this to me!", The captain said and pointed to the scarred part
"You didn't even ask for her name." Cara said to Alastair as they walked down the busy road. Their short time at the pub had not turned out the way Alastair hoped. He just kept walking in silence, and the silence was what made Cara uncomfortable."I did not need to," Alastair replied and she scoffed."Why not? She was clearly into you and you liked her as well. What is stopping you?" Cara asked, but then she realized how insensitive her statement was. She should not say such things about Alastair's relationship."Is it because of Miranda?" She asked but he was silent."How do you know she is still waiting for you?" Cara asked again but Alastair still said nothing. She was right. He did not know. But the thing bothering him was that he might not live to find out. "I... I do not want to forget her. I want to cherish our memories together until there is nothing left of me. That is why I cannot look at another woman. But what do you know? You are just a child.".Alastair said and scoff
The night still ravaged on as Alastair and Cara kept walking down the streets. Alastair got the chance to see more of the town, like he had secretly desired. The town was a beautiful place, quite exotic as well.He did not know if it were the decorations, or the thrill in the air but he was certain that that town had seen alot of bad days in the past and they were trying to make out the future as best as they can. He could see a young woman and two kids which looked like they were hers. The woman glanced at him and smiled, a smile which melted Alastair's heart. He saw that she had twin boys, and the imagination of the kind of life he would have been living if he grew up with his mother and brother was vivid. One of the twin boys ran towards him and gave him a popsicle. Alastair smiled as he took the popsicle from the boy, and giving their mother a nod, she quickly led her eager boys toward a candy shop. Alastair sighed as he watched them. He did not even hear Cara stepping up before h
The journey was quiet, and although the moonlight shone upon them like the ever glowing beam of light that it is, Cara was not feeling it. She just kept walking, a step behind Alastair. Her head was bowed, her fists were clenched. Her nails were digging into her palms, although not enough to give her an injury, it still hurt.Maybe she wanted it to hurt. Maybe she just wanted to feel something at the end of the day. She had been so hollow ever since the fight. She could feel Asmodeus crawling around in her mind. She could feel the Phoenix slowly regressing. She could feel the terror that was coming, very one that she was destined to bring upon the world."Are you alright?" Alastair asked her, snapping her out of it. She nodded quickly and looked at him for a moment. "You look disturbed. Is there anything you would like to talk about?" Alastair asked her again but she shook her head. He decided not to press her. If she was ready to talk, she would."Do you miss it? Everything else bef
An energy blast escaped from cara's body and hit all those that were in close proximity to her, James and Denise included. The force of the blast was so powerful that it took them off their feet and crashed them onto the ground. Cara let out a guttural growl as energy began to radiate from her body. The red, hot, energy began to gush out even more as her powers levitated her slowly. The growls continued, and so did the fear on lord Karl's face. He has never seen anything like that. He and his followers were not sure of what to do at that point. They slowly stood to their feet and watched as she stretched out her hand toward them. Her yellow eyes fell on them and with a sudden spark, her energy surged again. This time, it did not hit James and Denise. Both were surprised that the energy phased right through them to hit a sorcerer standing behind them and when they turned around, their eyes beheld a horror unlike what they knew before. The sorcerer's body froze. His eyes stretched out
"Cara... Cara, are you alright?"Cara could hear Fristborn's voice call out to her. She opened her eyes slowly and what she saw was someone she never knew she could see any more. Was she dead, or was she dreaming? She gazed at Fristborn's face and in that split second, she reached out to touch him.But someone else quickly grabbed her hand and she turned and saw Denise standing there. Her eyes roamed back to 'fristborn' but was actually James that was kneeling beside her. She blushed in embarrassment as she quickly say up. They were no longer in the house. From what Cara could see, they were some distance away from the house and it was not too quiet. She could still hear the sounds of guards running around, trying to look for them. The three of them remained silent for a while."What happened?" Cara asked as she rubbed her eyes. It felt like she slept for a long time."You fainted," Denise replied to her. Cara tried to recall what had happened after she felt the surge in her magic b
