As James pulled up to the Caruthers' residence, an odd soup of confusion and anticipation churned in his stomach. He parked his car and took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. What could be so urgent that they needed him at their home this late at night? He pushed the doorbell, the chime echoing through the quiet neighborhood.

Laura answered the door, her face a mask of nonchalance. "James, come in. We need to talk," she said briskly, ushering him inside.

"Talk about what?" James asked, his confusion deepening. "What's going on? You said you had a job for me, and that I needed to come here immediately, and I did. Is it anything more than that?"
