Chapter 2

Luthan's fury was evident on his face after hearing those words. He knew that the Lynns never accepted Mary as part of their family but selling her off was just too much.

He didn't know much about the Carters but one thing was certain. He was going to her back tonight.

The Carters were currently hosting a big celebration. It was Lionel Carter’s birthday and as the eldest member of the family, it was a high-end event and strictly on invitation.

The family had a net worth of roughly eighty million dollars, and as such, the invite was closed to anyone below the benchmark of twenty million dollars.

All the influential families were present at this event, including the Kings.

On arrival at the hotel, the guards got the door and Luthan stepped out.

His eyes scanned the hotel briefly. He couldn't remember the last time he had been to such a cheap hotel but he wasn't there to stay.

The plan was to retrieve Mary and leave.

His Porsche had already attracted the attention of the guests, as many wondered who he was.

Though there were other expensive cars present, the price of the Porsche was at least twice the cost of any car present.

On arrival at the entrance, a huge arm slammed into his chest.

“Where is your invite?” The bouncer demanded.

Luthan stared at him in confusion. Why would such a low-budget event require an invite?

“I don't have one. Would that be a problem?” Luthan asked coldly, just as his bodyguards surrounded him.

The bouncer, who was visibly intimidated by the men surrounding Luthan, slowly dropped his hand but he tried to keep a brave font.

“You cannot go in without an invite,” he said stiffly.

“What does it take to get an invite then? I do not plan to stay long,” Luthan asked calmly.

The man eyed Luthan carefully. Of a truth, he reeked of wealth and certainly had the poise of an influential man, but then again, his face had never appeared on the papers or television, so he could as well be a fraud.

Luthan's steel grey eyes darkened.

“I do not have time for this. Let me speak with a member of the family,” Luthan said impatiently.

“And what is causing all this commotion?” Kimberly Carter stepped out. She was the first daughter of the Carter family and owned about forty per cent of the Carter net worth.

“This man here doesn't have an invitation and he wouldn't leave,” the bouncer answered.

Kimberly's eyes shifted to Luthan, scanning him from head to toe.

“And who are you supposed to be?” She crossed her arms. “I'm not sure I know you.”

His attire suggested he was very rich. Even the guards had expensive suits and watches on. It made her a little cautious of her choice of words. She couldn't afford to anger him if he was indeed someone powerful.

“I am…”

“You!”

Luthan blinked, surprised to see Camille. He didn't expect to run into any of his family members here, but seeing her now reminded him of all his pent-up anger.

“You know him?” Kimberly asked. Camille, although shocked, was internally screaming at the prospect of conversing with a woman as reputable and powerful as Kimberly Carter.

“Yes! He is my useless ex-husband, who was convicted of rape and murder three years ago. After we kicked him out, we didn't hear from him again so we simply assumed he was dead in a ditch somewhere, but here he is, trying to stir trouble where he is not needed,” Camille spat.

The words completely shattered Kimberly's initial perception of Luthan. It was obvious that everything he had on was simply fake to give off the impression that he was rich.

“You mean he is an ex-convict?” Kimberly's gaze turned condescending.

“Yes, he is!”

“Get out of here, now!” Kimberly ordered. “We do not need your kind here.”

Their words, however, were completely meaningless to Luthan. If he wanted, he could drive them out of business and make them go bankrupt, but Mary was his priority now.

“What do we do, boss? Should we move them out of the way?” One of Luthan's guards asked him.

“I can handle this,” Luthan said simply and took a step towards Kimberly.

“Trust me, I do not want to be here either but I need to see someone inside. What will it take to get an invitation?” He asked.

“You sure have audacity to stand here and demand entrance,” Camille huffed, then turned to Kimberly. “You should ask the security to throw this man out. He is not needed here.”

Kimberly wanted to do just that but the stern look in Luthan's eyes and the dominating aura he exuded made her want to humble him.

Even if he was a fraud, his arrogance was appalling. The scene had also managed to attract the attention of everyone outside and they were already mumbling.

“For you to get in, you need to have a net worth of about twenty million dollars,” She told him, and Luthan almost laughed.

They were blocking his path for a mere twenty million dollars? Even his cars were worth more than that.

“Very well then, I will order a present for your grandfather, worth that amount. Would that be enough?” Luthan asked and gasps erupted.

“He is bluffing! This man is nothing but a lowlife, trust me!” Camille cut in. “Even if you sold your kidneys, you wouldn't be able to afford a million dollars, talk more of twenty!”

Luthan merely ignored her and kept his gaze on Kimberly. Camille's face reddened in embarrassment. Once upon a time, this man had been madly in love with her and worshipped the very ground she walked on.

Now he wouldn't even look at her?

“You want me to believe you are just going to gift my grandfather twenty million dollars?” Kimberly scoffed. “How stupid do you think I am?”

Even for the Carters, throwing away such an amount would have a disastrous effect on their wealth.

“You know what, I'll make the transfer now. I really don't have time for unnecessary talk,” Luthan said, signally his guard to step forward.

Kimberly was a little flustered by the way he told her off but she wanted to call his bluff and gave the guard the family account number. In less than a minute, her phone dinged shocking both her and Camille.

There was indeed an alert of twenty million dollars. Their jaws dropped, and the audience began murmuring.

“Can I go in now?” He asked and they made way for him to enter the hall, shock plastered on their faces.

“Where did you steal such an insane amount of money?” Camille’s question echoed and all eyes in the hall fixed on Luthan.
