I took in a deep breath, before slowly exhaling as I focused and locked my gaze onto my target...I then raised my hand, taking aim as I formed a swirling ball of Ether in front of my palm, intensifying the force it was generating as much as I could without losing control.
Okay, it's ready...here I go, ready, aim aaaand...fire!I fired out the swirling sphere of Ether, which rapidly shot forward in a straight line, hitting the middle of the empty glass bottle I'd set up as a target, shattering it into pieces upon impact."Damn it...," I muttered, clenching my fist in frustration...so close, I was off by about three inches..."What's with the sour face? Looked like a bullseye to me," Came Lilac's voice, from over by the stairs.I glanced in that direction, to see her seated on one of the bottom stairs, watching me. When did she get here? I didn't even notice...I was focusing too hard, I need to be more aware of my surroundings."I was aiming for the bottleneck, my goal was to try and hit the top part of the bottle while leaving the middle and bottom intact," I informed her with a sigh."I mean, it's close enough, isn't it? It's not like you're a Ranger, so this level of accuracy should be more than good enough, right?" She pointed out.Ranger is another Ascended Tier in the Physical Class...of all the Classes, the Physical Class is the most diverse and gives you the most options when it comes to choosing an Ascended Tier, each with their own subsequent, unique Apex Tier.In comparison, the Tamer Class that Lilac possesses only has one path, Tamer, then Summoner, and finally, Assimilator. Most of the Elemental Classes also have only one path, with the exception of the Earth Class, which has three. And the Physical Class has a total of six paths, easily the most of any Class. Anyway, I got a bit off topic, let's get back on track..."It doesn't matter what Class I am, the more accurately I can wield my Magic, the better my control becomes. I've made a lot of progress, sure, but I've still got a ton of room for improvement," I replied, staring down at my hand as I clenched it into a fist."I suppose that makes sense," She nodded thoughtfully, as she took out a bag of chips and opened it up, tossing one into her mouth and crunching it before holding it towards me, "Wamf one?""Don't talk with your mouth full...but yeah, sure, I'll take one. Thanks," I responded, deciding to take a break as I walked over towards her."Wait! You're all sweaty and gross, don't want you dripping in the bag...here, let me. Say aahh," She grinned, as she took out a chip and held it up towards me."You couldn't have said that in a nicer manner?" I sighed, before tilted my head down towards her hand and grabbing onto the chip with my lips, taking it from her fingers before I pushed it into my mouth and crunched down on it.Hm, it's kinda spicy, with a bit of a sour tang to it. Huh...I can't tell if I like it or not, I like the spice but I'm on the fence about the sourness. It's been about three months since the start of my current memories, but it honestly feels like I've been living here for way, way longer than that.Huh, has it really only been three months? All things considered, I suppose my rate of progress has actually been really good. I can just about hold my own against Iris with hand to hand combat alone, she's still holding back most of the time against me, and she's definitely got a significant advantage over me, but it's not as overwhelming as it used to be.Although, my physical strength has pretty much reached its limit in terms of how much I can improve it through training, though since I'm still only fourteen, I'll still grow stronger naturally as I get older.I mean, I technically can get stronger if I really focus on stuff like weight lifting, but Ifeus advised against it. His reasoning being that if I get too bulky, my speed will get negatively affected. Speed is more important than brute strength for a Martial Artist, the Apex Tier I'm gonna pretend to possess, so I'm better off focusing on maintaining and fine-tuning my current physique instead of bulking up further. So now it's just about sharpening my technique and honing my martial arts skills, along with factors like my reaction time and instincts, which according to Iris, have improved significantly but are still a bit too dull. And as for my Ether Magic, I've been progressing steadily. The three Arts that I possess as an Ether Mage, Ether Materialization, Ether Modelling and Ether Emission, I've been concentrating on trying to use the three as one.I have to activate them in order to be able to fire off Ether, though I can skip the last step if I instead opt to use the manifested Ether at close range instead of firing it out.The key is activation time, the whole process took too long when I first started training. So, I decided to give training in learning how to activate them without chanting a shot.Chantless casting is a rare skill, so I only intended to try out training in attempting to use it for a short while, just to see if it was something that's possible for me to acquire. Surprisingly, I was able to use it almost right away, and it turned out to be quite easy for me.It felt familiar, which likely means that, before I lost my memories, I was already able to use those Arts without chanting. It's a pretty rare skill, none of Ifeus, Iris or Lilac can consistently pull it off, Ifeus can do it with his low level Arts, but not with his more powerful abilities. So, you know, that was a nice confidence booster. After that, I began training to activate all three fluidly, as connected parts of a single process. I've more or less got the hang of it now, but my activation time still needs work. When it comes to significant attacks, it takes me a couple of seconds between when I start to activate the Arts and when I fire out the attack, longer if I take the time to charge it up first. And even small attacks, like the one I used against Iris the last time I sparred against her a couple of days ago, take almost a full second to go through the process.I want to cut down my casting by at least half the current amount of time it takes, and then even less after that, to the point where I'll be able to fire out my attacks instantly, or as close to instant as I can get. But, yeah, I'm still a ways off from reaching that level..."Yeah? Who is it?" I called out, as someone knocked on my door. It's definitely not Lilac, she would never knock. "It's me. May I come in?" Cane Ifeus's voice from outside the door. "Sure, come on in," I responded, sitting up as the door opened and he stepped inside. Another month or so has passed, it's now been about four months since the start of my current memories. It's around 10 PM at night right now, I was getting ready to go to sleep, so I hope this doesn't take too long. Ifeus and Iris have been busier than usual in the last couple of weeks, while Lilac has put all her focus into training, since she's close to reaching her Ascended Tier and wants to make up the remaining difference as quickly as possible. I've been sparring against her every so often, and at this point, I'm a fair bit more powerful than she is. I've learnt to use my Ether Magic to boost my physical attacks upon impact, and that's helped improve my physical strength as well. It works by channeling the Eth
"Okay, one round with you only using martial arts, and then one round with you going all out. Fair warning, I won't just be playing defense this time, I will attack and counter," Ifeus informed me. "Fine by me," I replied with a nod. "You can do it, To! Kick his ass!" Called out Lilac with a grin, waving at me. Both her and Iris were seated on the stairs, watching this. I could do without the audience, but I highly doubt they'd leave just because I told them to. "Wha-...hey, come on, you're going to hurt your dear old dad's feelings, Li," Responded Ifeus with a wistful sigh. "If I'm being honest, I'm rooting for Topaz too...I did train him for quite a while, so he's kinda my student. It'd be nice to see him give you a run for your money, at the very least," Chimed in Iris with a smirk. "Well, now, looks like I'm gonna have to take this seriously. Nothing personal, kid...but I gotta look cool for my daughters!" He declared as he met my gaze. "Yeah, nothing you just said was anywh
"You know, now that I think about it, wouldn't it make more sense for me to be the one who tests Topaz? Even if I don't hold back at all, he won't be completely overwhelmed, which will certainly be the case if you go all out, dad," Remarked Iris objectively. "Oh, it's fine. I can assess his current level a lot better if I'm the one sparring against him than if I was just watching him fight someone else. And after that first round, Topaz, I can confidently say that you'll be easily able to pass yourself off as a Martial Artist, an Ascended Mage of the Physical Class, with solely your hand to hand combat skills. I mean, there's no way in hell that a Basic Mage could ever land a hit on me, and you came close to landing two! Actually, considering the level you're currently at...I'd say you've been at the required level for at least a few weeks now. I know it's been a while since I last checked in on your progress, but you've exceeded my expectations, I'm intrigued to see how far you've c
"I wanna know too, what did you do back there? The speed you displayed was incredible, not to mention the amount of force you generated behind your punch," Remarked Iris with an intrigued look on her face. "Well, it's kinda simple, actually. About a couple of weeks ago, I realized that the three Arts of my Ether Mage Ascended Tier don't necessarily have to be used in the same sequence. Ether Materialization manifests Ether outside of my body, Ether Modelling lets me control and give shape to the manifested Ether, and Ether Emission lets me fire it out. Obviously, I can't use Ether Emission without first using the previous two Arts. Well, I technically can skip Ether Modelling, but then my output has no real shape or momentum to it, resulting in a weak attack. I can also technically use Ether Materialization on its own, but that limits me to using the manifested Ether at close range only. The game changer was when I realized that I can use Ether Modelling without using Ether Material
"So, tomorrow's the big day, To. Well, you excited?" Inquired Lilac, as I finished up my breakfast. "I'm not sure...I guess I'm equal parts excited and nervous? Maybe a little anxious too. And the fact that my daily routine will now be interrupted is pretty bittersweet...well, mostly bitter. Yeah, that about sums up my feelings on the subject," I surmised wryly. "I don't get you, To. I know I'd feel super restless and impatient if I'd been stuck indoors for over four months. Come on, you should be way more excited about this," She grinned in response. "Sure, I'll just change the way I feel because you said I should, that's super doable," I replied dryly. A couple of days have passed since my sparring matches against Ifeus. And tomorrow, I'll officially be joining his Magic Guild, Solaris. Incidentally, it's also my birthday tomorrow, my first since the start of my current memories. Today's the 19th of April, the year is 505 PA, the date on the day I first woke up here was the 2nd
"So, what exactly is this game?" I asked her, as she entered my room, holding a pack of cards. "It's a pretty simple card game, it's a deck of thirty cards, we each hold three cards in our hands at a time. Each card has one of three symbols on it...rock, paper and scissors. We both play one card each turn, and then the rules of rock-paper-scissors apply," She explained, as she sat on my bed, across from me. "Oh, okay, so it's just rock-paper-scissors in card form, then?" I surmised in bemusement. She wasn't kidding when she said that this is a simple game. I suppose it could be a slightly more fun way of playing rock-paper-scissors, but it seems kinda boring, especially for a game that she picked herself. There's gotta be more to-... "Hehehe...come now, who do you think I am? Obviously there's more to it than that! Did you really think I'd waste money on a game that's got nothing more to it that just rock-paper-scissors in card form?" She responded smugly, as she opened the pack an
"...""...""...""S-so...shall we, uh, continue the game?" Stuttered Lilac quietly, breaking the silence. After, uh, you know, THAT happened, I lifted her off my lap and turned away, feeling absolutely mortified as I calmed myself down. She was pretty quiet too, which means she probably realized what it was that, uh...p-poked her. "I-I think we should just stop already, I told you it had to be age-restricted for a reason...," I muttered, my gaze fixed downwards, as I was unable to look her in the eye. "Wh-what, are you chicken? Come on, you aren't scared, a-are you?" She taunted me, poking my shoulder a couple of times...but her taunts are definitely a lot less spirited than usual. This is painfully awkward. "You should be more worried about it than me...I-I mean, I bet that was a super unpleasant experience for you, and it might get even worse from here, s-so...," I trailed off. "Well, um...I guess it was kinda awkward, b-but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was unpleasan
"Are you ready to get going?" Inquired Ifeus with a smile, as I made my way down the stairs. "As ready as I'll ever be, I guess...but, uh, what's with this outfit?" I inquired in bemusement. "That's your gear. It's made of highly durable, but still quite light and flexible, leather. You're about to be a Guild Mage, so you might as well look the part, right?" He grinned with a thumbs up. "Okay, first off...I'm only going to register today, aren't I? So what I'm wearing really shouldn't make any difference either way. And second...I feel kinda exposed," I frowned apprehensively. It's the next day, the 20th of April, 505 PA, which happens to be my birthday, and I was just about to head out to the Guild with Ifeus. Lilac's gonna be tagging along too, while Iris is busy on a Quest in another city at the moment. A few minutes ago, Ifeus handed me this new outfit, to use as battle gear. So, I went back up to my room and changed into it, but, uh...it's kinda missing something. It consist
