"Woah!" I exclaimed in alarm, as I narrowly ducked under the horizontal swing of Iris's wooden sword, before letting myself fall back and swinging my feet up as my palms landed on the floor.
Iris swiftly tilted her body back to avoid my heels crashing onto her face, before I used the momentum to backflip, springing back a few paces as I landed, getting some distance.I grimaced as she immediately shot towards me, driving the wooden sword straight at my face as she closed in on me rapidly. I quickly tilted my head across to evade it, the wooden blade grazing my left cheek and nicking the side of my ear, before I drove my right fist towards her.As my fist closed in on her chest, she swiftly took one hand off the handle of the wooden sword and grabbed my forearm, stopping my punch before flicking her other wrist and whipping the wooden sword down as I began to drive my knee up towards her waist.I let out a hiss of pain as she struck my ankle with the wooden sword, slowing down my knee strike just enough for her to spring back and evade it, briefly tightening her grip on my forearm as she jumped back before abruptly letting go, causing me to overbalance forward.I just barely managed to keep from falling on my face, but she was already zipping in towards me before I could even start to regain my balance, tightening her grip on the handle of her sword as she raised it up high."It's over...[Saber Art: Heavy Slash]!" She exclaimed, as she rapidly swung it down towards my head.I reacted on instinct, extending out my right index finger as I formed a small sphere of Ether and fired it out at her chest. Her eyes widened briefly before she rapidly adjusted her grip on her blade and changed the flow of her swing, slashing it down at my incoming projectile and dissipating it, the wooden sword taking some damage, getting chipped.I began to spring back to try and get some distance, but she was quick to transition into her next attack, unleashing a rapid, powerful horizontal slash at my torso, which slammed onto the middle of my body, just below my ribs.I let out a sharp, wheezing gasp as she knocked the wind our of me, as she sent me flying back a few meters, my back hitting the floor with a painful thud. I groaned as I sat up, my body feeling weak as the pain resonated throughout my body..."Don't move too much for a bit. The strong impacts to your front and then to your back literally rattled your bones and organs, so don't move much till it settles down, you'll probably throw up otherwise," She advised me, walking over as she added, "Also, you're not supposed to use Ether Magic when sparring against me. Granted, I can deal with it, but if you make it a habit, you're not gonna do a very good job of keeping your Class a secret.""Yeah, I know, I sort of just reacted on instinct. I've been making great progress with my Ether Magic lately, so I kinda couldn't help it," I replied with a pained grimace, as I gingerly rubbed the spot she'd struck with her wooden sword."Still though, I have to say, you've improved significantly, and at a pretty impressive rate at that. Your instincts were incredibly dull before, but they've gotten a lot sharper lately. You could probably hold your own against most newbie Ascended Mages at your current level, even without using your Ether Magic. You still can't land a proper hit on me, but I find myself having to take you seriously more often now, I don't have the luxury of holding back as much as I used to. You've been training hard, haven't you? Well done, Topaz," She stated with a nod of approval."But you are still holding back, and it takes everything I've got just to force you on the defensive for a moment, let alone actually landing a hit," I sighed with a wry smile."True, but I've been an Ascended Mage since I was four, which means I've been training with my Magic for over twelve years. Okay, I technically wasn't allowed to train properly until I was right, since dad's so overprotective. My point is, as far as Ascended Mages go, I'm among the stronger ones. And there's a world of difference between an experienced Ascended Mage and one that's still green," She remarked as she patted my shoulder, before helping me back up."I mean, when I'm not using my Ether Magic, Lilac is pretty close to the same level I'm currently at. Well, I am technically stronger than her in terms of raw strength, but she's about the same speed I am and she's a hell of a lot more agile, so we're pretty much even when I'm only using martial arts. With that in mind, I'd say I'm still a ways off from being good enough to pass myself off as an Ascended Mage with solely just hand to hand combat," I surmised objectively."Oh, is that so? Hm...are you sure about that? You're able to put up more of a fight against me than she can, I'm quite sure of that. Wait, don't tell me...are you maybe unconsciously pulling your punches against her? You do seem to have developed a bit of a soft spot for her lately...," She mused thoughtfully.Wait, what?"H-huh? No, there's no way...you're probably just imagining things," I vehemently shook my head in denial."Okay, with that reaction, I'm convinced that I'm right. Still, if you haven't realized it, then you must not be holding back too much...hm, I'd wager that you've been subconsciously lowering yourself to her level whenever you spar against her, and it's a small enough extent that you haven't noticed. Yeah, that's probably what's going on," She nodded, looking pretty sure of her theory."Whatever, let's just agree to disagree.""No, you're definitely in denial. Just admit it, you've got a soft spot for my sister, and as a result, you hold back against her without even realizing it. Aw, how sweet...sounds like someone might be in love, eh?" She smirked teasingly."Am not.""Are too.""Am not.""Fine, keep telling yourself that.""Sure, I will, because it's true.""Is not.""Is too-...forget it, this is going nowhere."I took in a deep breath, before slowly exhaling as I focused and locked my gaze onto my target...I then raised my hand, taking aim as I formed a swirling ball of Ether in front of my palm, intensifying the force it was generating as much as I could without losing control. Okay, it's ready...here I go, ready, aim aaaand...fire! I fired out the swirling sphere of Ether, which rapidly shot forward in a straight line, hitting the middle of the empty glass bottle I'd set up as a target, shattering it into pieces upon impact. "Damn it...," I muttered, clenching my fist in frustration...so close, I was off by about three inches... "What's with the sour face? Looked like a bullseye to me," Came Lilac's voice, from over by the stairs. I glanced in that direction, to see her seated on one of the bottom stairs, watching me. When did she get here? I didn't even notice...I was focusing too hard, I need to be more aware of my surroundings. "I was aiming for the bottleneck, my goal was to try a
"Yeah? Who is it?" I called out, as someone knocked on my door. It's definitely not Lilac, she would never knock. "It's me. May I come in?" Cane Ifeus's voice from outside the door. "Sure, come on in," I responded, sitting up as the door opened and he stepped inside. Another month or so has passed, it's now been about four months since the start of my current memories. It's around 10 PM at night right now, I was getting ready to go to sleep, so I hope this doesn't take too long. Ifeus and Iris have been busier than usual in the last couple of weeks, while Lilac has put all her focus into training, since she's close to reaching her Ascended Tier and wants to make up the remaining difference as quickly as possible. I've been sparring against her every so often, and at this point, I'm a fair bit more powerful than she is. I've learnt to use my Ether Magic to boost my physical attacks upon impact, and that's helped improve my physical strength as well. It works by channeling the Eth
"Okay, one round with you only using martial arts, and then one round with you going all out. Fair warning, I won't just be playing defense this time, I will attack and counter," Ifeus informed me. "Fine by me," I replied with a nod. "You can do it, To! Kick his ass!" Called out Lilac with a grin, waving at me. Both her and Iris were seated on the stairs, watching this. I could do without the audience, but I highly doubt they'd leave just because I told them to. "Wha-...hey, come on, you're going to hurt your dear old dad's feelings, Li," Responded Ifeus with a wistful sigh. "If I'm being honest, I'm rooting for Topaz too...I did train him for quite a while, so he's kinda my student. It'd be nice to see him give you a run for your money, at the very least," Chimed in Iris with a smirk. "Well, now, looks like I'm gonna have to take this seriously. Nothing personal, kid...but I gotta look cool for my daughters!" He declared as he met my gaze. "Yeah, nothing you just said was anywh
"You know, now that I think about it, wouldn't it make more sense for me to be the one who tests Topaz? Even if I don't hold back at all, he won't be completely overwhelmed, which will certainly be the case if you go all out, dad," Remarked Iris objectively. "Oh, it's fine. I can assess his current level a lot better if I'm the one sparring against him than if I was just watching him fight someone else. And after that first round, Topaz, I can confidently say that you'll be easily able to pass yourself off as a Martial Artist, an Ascended Mage of the Physical Class, with solely your hand to hand combat skills. I mean, there's no way in hell that a Basic Mage could ever land a hit on me, and you came close to landing two! Actually, considering the level you're currently at...I'd say you've been at the required level for at least a few weeks now. I know it's been a while since I last checked in on your progress, but you've exceeded my expectations, I'm intrigued to see how far you've c
"I wanna know too, what did you do back there? The speed you displayed was incredible, not to mention the amount of force you generated behind your punch," Remarked Iris with an intrigued look on her face. "Well, it's kinda simple, actually. About a couple of weeks ago, I realized that the three Arts of my Ether Mage Ascended Tier don't necessarily have to be used in the same sequence. Ether Materialization manifests Ether outside of my body, Ether Modelling lets me control and give shape to the manifested Ether, and Ether Emission lets me fire it out. Obviously, I can't use Ether Emission without first using the previous two Arts. Well, I technically can skip Ether Modelling, but then my output has no real shape or momentum to it, resulting in a weak attack. I can also technically use Ether Materialization on its own, but that limits me to using the manifested Ether at close range only. The game changer was when I realized that I can use Ether Modelling without using Ether Material
"So, tomorrow's the big day, To. Well, you excited?" Inquired Lilac, as I finished up my breakfast. "I'm not sure...I guess I'm equal parts excited and nervous? Maybe a little anxious too. And the fact that my daily routine will now be interrupted is pretty bittersweet...well, mostly bitter. Yeah, that about sums up my feelings on the subject," I surmised wryly. "I don't get you, To. I know I'd feel super restless and impatient if I'd been stuck indoors for over four months. Come on, you should be way more excited about this," She grinned in response. "Sure, I'll just change the way I feel because you said I should, that's super doable," I replied dryly. A couple of days have passed since my sparring matches against Ifeus. And tomorrow, I'll officially be joining his Magic Guild, Solaris. Incidentally, it's also my birthday tomorrow, my first since the start of my current memories. Today's the 19th of April, the year is 505 PA, the date on the day I first woke up here was the 2nd
"So, what exactly is this game?" I asked her, as she entered my room, holding a pack of cards. "It's a pretty simple card game, it's a deck of thirty cards, we each hold three cards in our hands at a time. Each card has one of three symbols on it...rock, paper and scissors. We both play one card each turn, and then the rules of rock-paper-scissors apply," She explained, as she sat on my bed, across from me. "Oh, okay, so it's just rock-paper-scissors in card form, then?" I surmised in bemusement. She wasn't kidding when she said that this is a simple game. I suppose it could be a slightly more fun way of playing rock-paper-scissors, but it seems kinda boring, especially for a game that she picked herself. There's gotta be more to-... "Hehehe...come now, who do you think I am? Obviously there's more to it than that! Did you really think I'd waste money on a game that's got nothing more to it that just rock-paper-scissors in card form?" She responded smugly, as she opened the pack an
"...""...""...""S-so...shall we, uh, continue the game?" Stuttered Lilac quietly, breaking the silence. After, uh, you know, THAT happened, I lifted her off my lap and turned away, feeling absolutely mortified as I calmed myself down. She was pretty quiet too, which means she probably realized what it was that, uh...p-poked her. "I-I think we should just stop already, I told you it had to be age-restricted for a reason...," I muttered, my gaze fixed downwards, as I was unable to look her in the eye. "Wh-what, are you chicken? Come on, you aren't scared, a-are you?" She taunted me, poking my shoulder a couple of times...but her taunts are definitely a lot less spirited than usual. This is painfully awkward. "You should be more worried about it than me...I-I mean, I bet that was a super unpleasant experience for you, and it might get even worse from here, s-so...," I trailed off. "Well, um...I guess it was kinda awkward, b-but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was unpleasan
