"...-like they won't even listen to me! It's so annoying!" Huffed Lilac, as she moved one of her pieces forward.
"Yeah, that sucks," I replied with a nod, as I caught her piece in a trap and claimed in."...are you actually listening?""Yeah, that really sucks.""Hey.""I see, how awful.""...hey.""Mhm, that sucks.""Hey!" She exclaimed indignantly, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me."Huh? What?" I responded as she startled me."You weren't listening to a word I said, were you!?""N-no, I was totally listening," I averted my gaze as she glared at me."Okay, what was the last thing I said?" She narrowed her eyes at me."Uh...you accused me of not listening to a word you said.""Before that.""You said, uh...that sucks?""No, that's what you said! You jerk, you were totally tuning me out!" She pouted as she shook me by the shoulders again."Okay, to be fair, you were rambling on and on for ages, you can't expect me to-...h-hey, stop shaking me!""I'm gonna repeat myself, and this time, you better listen, got it?" She frowned as she flicked my forehead."Ow...do I really have to?" I sighed in response.A few days have passed since that unfortunate incident with the rabbit, it's currently late in the afternoon, about an hour after we had lunch. After eating, she insisted that I join her to play some games, we were currently in the middle of a game of checkers, which I'm winning, I might add.A few minutes after we started playing, she began venting about something, which she sometimes does...and after a few seconds, I tuned her out and focused on the game.Oh, nice, I just won.Let me summarize her grievances...as I've mentioned before, she's a member of Ifeus's Magic Guild, Solaris, but since she's still a Basic Mage, she's only allowed to take on simple Quests. Also, Ifeus is a super doting and overprotective father, so he's been further limiting the types of Quests she's allowed to take. Like Quests that she's technically eligible for but are still somewhat dangerous, he's been refusing to let her go on such Quests. And well, she's not happy about it. Especially with the fact that Iris is just a little over two years older than her, but she's allowed to take on far more dangerous Quests.I don't think that's a valid comparison though...like I mentioned before, Iris is a prodigy, she had a tremendous advantage right from the get go. Her Ether Capacity when she first awakened her Magic System was higher than what the average is for Ascended Mages, which is saying a lot.A person's Ether Capacity grows the more they use their Magic, like how muscles get stronger the more you use them, and the rate of growth of Ether Capacity is pretty similar for everyone...in other words, those who start off with a high Ether Capacity basically have a head start. If this was a race, and Lilac and I began at the starting line, then Iris began with the finish line already in sight. And that's a factor that we don't have any control over, it's pretty much down to luck."Your problem is that you compare yourself to your sister. There's no sense in that, it's-...," I began, as she finished complaining."Oh, not you too. Yeah, I get it, Iris is a one in a million prodigy, I'm nothing but average in comparison," She grumbled irritably.Well, this isn't good...while her usual abundance of energy really wears me out, she's even more of a pain to deal with when she's in a bad mood..."Let me finish...I know how hard you train, Li, you certainly don't lose out to her when it comes to effort, that much is undeniable. There's no need for you to try and match her pace...just do things at your own pace. I mean, you've made great progress, haven't you? You're already pretty close to the level required to become an Ascended Mage, it's only a matter of time now. Most people don't become Ascended Mages till they're in their twenties, it took Ifeus till he was in his thirties, and he's an Apex Mage now, one of the strongest Mages in the world.Iris may be stronger than you, sure...but you're improving and progressing faster than she is, through sheer effort alone, without relying on any talent or potential that you randomly lucked into. That's nothing to scoff at. In fact, it's pretty amazing, if you ask me," I stated honestly, while setting up the pieces on the checkers board again.Uh...why's she not saying anything? I'm not used to her being quiet, this is kinda unsettling...did I say something wrong?Suddenly, as I began to lift my gaze to get a look at her, my eyes widened, caught off-guard by the sight that met me. She's...smiling. She's almost always got a smile on her face, with how cheerful and upbeat she is on a near-constant basis, but...I don't think I've ever seen her smile like this before. It's so...tender, and warm. The way she's looking at me, the warm glow in her eyes and on her cheeks...wh-why's my chest starting to pound? It feels like my breath is caught in my throat, and my face feels like it's heating up..."Thank you, To, I...I think I really needed to hear that, you're the best," She remarked, her smile expanding into a happy grin as she let out a cheerful laugh. She's so...so radiant right now, almost dazzlingly bright..."D-don't mention it, I just spoke my mind, that's all. You don't need to make a big deal out of it," I muttered, averting my gaze."Hm, noted...but I'll decide if something's a big deal to me or not. In fact, you know what? I think that earned you a hug," She decided, standing up and walking around the table."Huh? No, no, that's really not necessary, I'm-...," I began with a shake of my head, trailing off as she ignored me and pulled me into a hug.C-crap, I'm still sitting, which means my head is right on her chest...her soft, bouncy chest-...snap out of it, damn it! Compose yourself, man!"Hehe, thought you'd put up more of a struggle," She smirked teasingly."Th-this really isn't necessary, you know...come on, let go already," I muttered awkwardly, trying to ignore my senses...her scent is so sweet and fragrant, I feel like it's making my head spin."Sure, I will...in a bit, we're just getting started," She replied, as she hugged me more firmly..."Woah!" I exclaimed in alarm, as I narrowly ducked under the horizontal swing of Iris's wooden sword, before letting myself fall back and swinging my feet up as my palms landed on the floor. Iris swiftly tilted her body back to avoid my heels crashing onto her face, before I used the momentum to backflip, springing back a few paces as I landed, getting some distance. I grimaced as she immediately shot towards me, driving the wooden sword straight at my face as she closed in on me rapidly. I quickly tilted my head across to evade it, the wooden blade grazing my left cheek and nicking the side of my ear, before I drove my right fist towards her. As my fist closed in on her chest, she swiftly took one hand off the handle of the wooden sword and grabbed my forearm, stopping my punch before flicking her other wrist and whipping the wooden sword down as I began to drive my knee up towards her waist. I let out a hiss of pain as she struck my ankle with the wooden sword, slowing down my kn
I took in a deep breath, before slowly exhaling as I focused and locked my gaze onto my target...I then raised my hand, taking aim as I formed a swirling ball of Ether in front of my palm, intensifying the force it was generating as much as I could without losing control. Okay, it's ready...here I go, ready, aim aaaand...fire! I fired out the swirling sphere of Ether, which rapidly shot forward in a straight line, hitting the middle of the empty glass bottle I'd set up as a target, shattering it into pieces upon impact. "Damn it...," I muttered, clenching my fist in frustration...so close, I was off by about three inches... "What's with the sour face? Looked like a bullseye to me," Came Lilac's voice, from over by the stairs. I glanced in that direction, to see her seated on one of the bottom stairs, watching me. When did she get here? I didn't even notice...I was focusing too hard, I need to be more aware of my surroundings. "I was aiming for the bottleneck, my goal was to try a
"Yeah? Who is it?" I called out, as someone knocked on my door. It's definitely not Lilac, she would never knock. "It's me. May I come in?" Cane Ifeus's voice from outside the door. "Sure, come on in," I responded, sitting up as the door opened and he stepped inside. Another month or so has passed, it's now been about four months since the start of my current memories. It's around 10 PM at night right now, I was getting ready to go to sleep, so I hope this doesn't take too long. Ifeus and Iris have been busier than usual in the last couple of weeks, while Lilac has put all her focus into training, since she's close to reaching her Ascended Tier and wants to make up the remaining difference as quickly as possible. I've been sparring against her every so often, and at this point, I'm a fair bit more powerful than she is. I've learnt to use my Ether Magic to boost my physical attacks upon impact, and that's helped improve my physical strength as well. It works by channeling the Eth
"Okay, one round with you only using martial arts, and then one round with you going all out. Fair warning, I won't just be playing defense this time, I will attack and counter," Ifeus informed me. "Fine by me," I replied with a nod. "You can do it, To! Kick his ass!" Called out Lilac with a grin, waving at me. Both her and Iris were seated on the stairs, watching this. I could do without the audience, but I highly doubt they'd leave just because I told them to. "Wha-...hey, come on, you're going to hurt your dear old dad's feelings, Li," Responded Ifeus with a wistful sigh. "If I'm being honest, I'm rooting for Topaz too...I did train him for quite a while, so he's kinda my student. It'd be nice to see him give you a run for your money, at the very least," Chimed in Iris with a smirk. "Well, now, looks like I'm gonna have to take this seriously. Nothing personal, kid...but I gotta look cool for my daughters!" He declared as he met my gaze. "Yeah, nothing you just said was anywh
"You know, now that I think about it, wouldn't it make more sense for me to be the one who tests Topaz? Even if I don't hold back at all, he won't be completely overwhelmed, which will certainly be the case if you go all out, dad," Remarked Iris objectively. "Oh, it's fine. I can assess his current level a lot better if I'm the one sparring against him than if I was just watching him fight someone else. And after that first round, Topaz, I can confidently say that you'll be easily able to pass yourself off as a Martial Artist, an Ascended Mage of the Physical Class, with solely your hand to hand combat skills. I mean, there's no way in hell that a Basic Mage could ever land a hit on me, and you came close to landing two! Actually, considering the level you're currently at...I'd say you've been at the required level for at least a few weeks now. I know it's been a while since I last checked in on your progress, but you've exceeded my expectations, I'm intrigued to see how far you've c
"I wanna know too, what did you do back there? The speed you displayed was incredible, not to mention the amount of force you generated behind your punch," Remarked Iris with an intrigued look on her face. "Well, it's kinda simple, actually. About a couple of weeks ago, I realized that the three Arts of my Ether Mage Ascended Tier don't necessarily have to be used in the same sequence. Ether Materialization manifests Ether outside of my body, Ether Modelling lets me control and give shape to the manifested Ether, and Ether Emission lets me fire it out. Obviously, I can't use Ether Emission without first using the previous two Arts. Well, I technically can skip Ether Modelling, but then my output has no real shape or momentum to it, resulting in a weak attack. I can also technically use Ether Materialization on its own, but that limits me to using the manifested Ether at close range only. The game changer was when I realized that I can use Ether Modelling without using Ether Material
"So, tomorrow's the big day, To. Well, you excited?" Inquired Lilac, as I finished up my breakfast. "I'm not sure...I guess I'm equal parts excited and nervous? Maybe a little anxious too. And the fact that my daily routine will now be interrupted is pretty bittersweet...well, mostly bitter. Yeah, that about sums up my feelings on the subject," I surmised wryly. "I don't get you, To. I know I'd feel super restless and impatient if I'd been stuck indoors for over four months. Come on, you should be way more excited about this," She grinned in response. "Sure, I'll just change the way I feel because you said I should, that's super doable," I replied dryly. A couple of days have passed since my sparring matches against Ifeus. And tomorrow, I'll officially be joining his Magic Guild, Solaris. Incidentally, it's also my birthday tomorrow, my first since the start of my current memories. Today's the 19th of April, the year is 505 PA, the date on the day I first woke up here was the 2nd
"So, what exactly is this game?" I asked her, as she entered my room, holding a pack of cards. "It's a pretty simple card game, it's a deck of thirty cards, we each hold three cards in our hands at a time. Each card has one of three symbols on it...rock, paper and scissors. We both play one card each turn, and then the rules of rock-paper-scissors apply," She explained, as she sat on my bed, across from me. "Oh, okay, so it's just rock-paper-scissors in card form, then?" I surmised in bemusement. She wasn't kidding when she said that this is a simple game. I suppose it could be a slightly more fun way of playing rock-paper-scissors, but it seems kinda boring, especially for a game that she picked herself. There's gotta be more to-... "Hehehe...come now, who do you think I am? Obviously there's more to it than that! Did you really think I'd waste money on a game that's got nothing more to it that just rock-paper-scissors in card form?" She responded smugly, as she opened the pack an
