My name is Topaz Oriole, and I have amnesia. I'm apparently fourteen years old, born on the 20th of April, in the year 490 PA. The current year is 504 PA, and PA stands for Post-Apocalypse. I'll get to that later.
The first memory I have is waking up in an unfamiliar room, before being greeted by an unfamiliar man who claimed to be my guardian, and who turned out to be a bit of a pain in the ass with all his secrecy. It's been a month since then, and I have to say, this place is pretty comfortable. It's a two-story house with a big garden out front and a backyard, with four rooms on the upper floor. Since Ifeus is a Guildmaster, he's seriously loaded. Possibly most importantly, the meals are great too.The bathroom here is massive, it even has a sauna and a jacuzzi, which I don't think I've experienced before...with trying certain things, I sometimes get a sense of familiarity and deja vu, which likely means I've experienced them before.Like with eating certain foods, and also my Magic, it came so naturally to me during the first few days of training with it, I think I've long since caught up to whatever level of mastery I had over it before I lost my memories. There's a massive basement under the house that's used as a training room, I mostly use it for training alone, but every now and then when he has some free time, he instructs and spars with me.He also forbade Iris and Lilac from going down to the basement while I'm training...but about a week in, Lilac snuck down out of curiosity and saw me using my Ether Magic. Naturally, she had a lot of questions.Ifeus wasn't too happy about that, and reluctantly told the two of them about my unusual Class, and then made them promise not to tell anyone.Aside from training, he also insists that I study basic subjects like math and language. I actually kinda enjoy training, but I really hate studying...time goes so slowly, and concentrating on it is seriously exhausting, sometimes I'll read an entire page but none of the information sticks in my head at all.And upon re-reading it, I'll find myself wondering if the words changed somehow, because I can't remember reading any of it. Maybe it's a side effect of my amnesia...no, that's unlikely, I have no such trouble when I read novels for entertainment, I just really hate studying.Anyway, in my free time, I usually laze about in my room, reading books. Well, I try to, at least...Lilac often barges in and drags me out, forcing me to play stuff like hide and seek, cards or board games.I was pretty awkward around her and Iris at first, but now that I've gotten used to them, I'm a lot more comfortable. Iris is generally easier to be around, she's usually amicable and a bit reserved, though she can be a little scary when angered...which happens often thanks to Lilac.Speaking of whom...she's a lot to deal with. She's got a seemingly endless pit of energy, it's like an overwhelming tidal wave that sweeps you up despite your protests. And I do protest, but getting into a conflict would be a pain, not to mention exhausting, so more often than not, I end up relenting and going along with whatever she has in mind. She's really blunt and outspoken, never afraid to say exactly what's on her mind. I have to admit, I kinda admire that, I don't think I could be so candid and unreserved...I just wish she'd give me some space sometimes. On another note, after considering my options, I decided to join Ifeus's Magic Guild, Solaris. He seemed pretty happy about that, though he told me it'd be safer to postpone me joining until I'm a bit stronger.Well it's not like I'm in any particular rush, so I'm fine with that. Incidentally, both Iris and Lilac are members of the Solaris...which means that, from time to time, I get the place to myself, with the three of them busy with Guild work.Alright, that about sums up my present, the current state of my life...so, with that, I'll move on to explaining the history of the world. About five centuries ago, this world was drastically different to how it is now. Most significantly, Magic didn't exist, it was thought to be nothing more than a fictional concept. It was a world of technology, made up of things that no longer exist now, devices that ran on energy sources other than Ether, energy sources that we don't know how to utilize today.Everything changed when seven individuals discovered a strange energy that had previous remained undetected, an energy that's now known as Ether. It was unlike anything they'd ever come across, and they began trying to find ways to utilize and make use of the energy. And after years of trial and error, they built a device they believed to be capable of harnessing the energy. However, they hadn't fully comprehended the properties of the energy, and in their rush for progress and eagerness to get results, they went ahead and activated the device. And that led to the greatest disaster in history, which is now known as the Ether Apocalypse...a catastrophic explosion of the energy enveloped the whole world, changing the very structure of the Earth. The planet itself shrunk drastically in the blink of an eye, billions upon billions of people and animals died instantly, without so much as a trace of their bodies left in the aftermath, as the world was reduced to a single continent and a handful of small islands around it.The seven individuals were significantly affected by the explosion, having being at the very center of it. Most of them underwent changes to their appearances as well, to varying extents. One of them grew pointy ears, another sprouted feathers all over their body, their arms turning into wings. Another found their body covered in fish-like scales, along with forming gills and fins, while one other grew ten times larger than they'd been before.Of the last three, one took the form of a massive, winged reptile, resembling a Dragon, one took on a demonic appearance, with dark, leathery red skin, twisted horns and wings and a tail, and as for the last one, their appearance wasn't visibly altered, still appearing human. The vast majority of humans and animals underwent similar changes to the seven of them, almost every single organism that have survived the initial disaster significantly affected. With the planet shrunk, the presence of Ether in the environment became more prevalent, rapidly accelerating those changes. But all of that was overshadowed by the world being thrown into complete chaos...a once prosperous and thriving world has been reduced to a desolate, lawless wasteland, and with barely even one percent of the world's population surviving, all existing technologies disappeared before long. The seven who caused the disaster salvaged the scraps of the technology they'd used and worked tirelessly to fix their mistake, but soon realized that there was no going back to the way things were...the world was irreversibly changed. And the seven of them had changed too, and I don't just mean physically. As a result of the Ether explosion, they had each gained transcendent levels of power and intellect, and would eventually come to be known as...the Seven Gods...After gaining an understanding and comprehension over Ether, the Seven Gods pooled their newfound knowledge and intelligence to establish the Magic System that exists together, giving the people the ability to stably harness their powers and halting the widespread, rampant mutations. Apparently, the way the Magic System works is based on technology that existed before the disaster, the display that a Mage sees when they enter their subconscious was apparently created with the lost technology as a basis for its layout and functionality. However, simply establishing the Magic System wasn't enough to bring an end to the chaos and mayhem in the new, post-apocalyptic world...the Seven Gods soon realized that the core of the issue was that the people who had undergone physical changes were discriminating against those who looked different to them. That's when they decided to take on the role of Gods, appearing before the people with overwhelming displays of power to get their attention.
"Ugh, so bright...," I muttered to myself as I yawned, dragging my my feet avorss my room and opening up the light box, squinting my eyes as a bright glow shone out of it. Oh, right, I mentioned before that all technology that existed before the Ether Apocalypse five hundred years ago no longer exists, let me explain what technology is like in the current era. Most things are powered using various forms of crystallized Ether, which are known as Vitrea. They're crystals with special properties that form under certain conditions, used for a variety of things, like lighting, heating, cooling, cooking and so on. For lighting, we use what's known as Light Vitrea, crystals that form in areas exposed to heavy sunlight, like deserts. They produce light indefinitely by continually absorbing Ether from the surrounding air. The only way to switch them off is to enclose them in lead, which blocks the flow of Ether. So Light Vitrea usually come in lead boxes that can be mounted on walls or ceil
"Ow...that really hurt, I think it's broken...," I groaned, rubbing my nose gingerly as I got back up, rubbing the area above my upper lip as blood trickled out of my nostrils. "You have a bad habit of freezing up every time I go on the offensive, at least try to react in some way, anything would be better than not moving at all. You'd be dead if this wasn't a wooden sword," Responded Iris, pointing the blunt blade at me as I stood up. "Maybe go a little easier, sis, don't you think you're kinda overdoing it?" Called out Lilac from the stairs, watching us as she sipped on a glass of apple juice while her snake slithered across her left arm. "The harder I am on him, the faster he'll improve.""Yikes, sure glad you aren't training me, you overpowered gorilla...," Muttered Lilac wryly. "Hm? What was that? You say something?""Nothing! Didn't say a word!"A couple more weeks have passed, and before this, I'd been spending a couple of hours each day training by myself. One hour in hand
"Knock knock, I'm coming in!""There's no point in saying that after you've already barged in, Li...or rather, instead of literally saying 'knock knock', just actually knock on the door like a normal person, and then wait till I say you can come in before barging in," I sighed in exasperation, as I set down my book. "Oh, never mind all that. Come on, I'm bored, let's hang out," She grinned in response. "I'll pass.""Don't be like that, I mean, it's not like you're doing anything important right now, so let's do something together," Lilac replied as she pulled on my arm. "On the contrary, I'm in the middle of reading, and it was just getting good...so leave me alone," I muttered wearily. About a week has passed, and it was currently early in the evening, a couple of hours after we'd had lunch. Iris and Ifeus were busy with the Magic Guild, so it was just Lilac and I in the house. Which sucks, because it means that all her attention inevitably lands on me. I spent a bit more time in
"What the hell!? Why's a square like this here right at the start!?" Exclaimed Lilac indignantly. "Hey, I tried to warn ya," I shrugged wryly, my ears perking up as the sound of the door opening echoed out as I picked up the dice and rolled it. I got a four...good, it's a safe spot... "I'm home, Lilac, Topaz!" Came Iris's voice, as she shut the door and the sound of her footsteps approaching echoed out. Hm? Why does Lilac look so tense? "Hey, you okay-...?" I started to ask her. "Crap, crap, crap!" She whispered sharply with an alarmed look in her eyes, snatching the box of cookies from me and looking around frantically before starting to slip the box under the couch. W-wait, don't tell me she... "Hey, you guys, what are you upt-...are those my cookies?" Iris began to greet us, before frowning and narrowing her eyes at Lilac, he voice going low and cold. Oh, no. This isn't good... "N-no...," Stuttered Lilac, as she slowly slid the box under the couch. You idiot, it's too lat
"Hey, you can let go of my arm, I'm not gonna run away," I sighed as she dragged me along with her as usual. "It's not that, you just walk way too slowly on your own," She replied, as she led me to the back door, leading out into the yard behind the house. "No, you just walk too fast...""Oh, please, I've seen old ladies who walk faster than you, you're so lazy, To," She grinned as she opened the door and stepped out, finally letting go of my arm. "Whatever...okay, so what is it that you want to show me? Did you tame a new Monster or animal?" I inquired, glancing in the direction of the shed. She possesses the Tamer Class, currently at the Basic Tier, which is also called Tamer. She's pretty close to reaching the required level to unlock her Ascended Tier though, which is called Summoner. And the Apex Tier of the Tamer Class is called Assimilater, though no one of the Tamer Class has reached that Apex in over a century. Mainly because the Tamer Class is among the least popular Cla
"...-like they won't even listen to me! It's so annoying!" Huffed Lilac, as she moved one of her pieces forward. "Yeah, that sucks," I replied with a nod, as I caught her piece in a trap and claimed in. "...are you actually listening?""Yeah, that really sucks.""Hey.""I see, how awful.""...hey.""Mhm, that sucks.""Hey!" She exclaimed indignantly, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me. "Huh? What?" I responded as she startled me."You weren't listening to a word I said, were you!?""N-no, I was totally listening," I averted my gaze as she glared at me."Okay, what was the last thing I said?" She narrowed her eyes at me. "Uh...you accused me of not listening to a word you said.""Before that.""You said, uh...that sucks?""No, that's what you said! You jerk, you were totally tuning me out!" She pouted as she shook me by the shoulders again. "Okay, to be fair, you were rambling on and on for ages, you can't expect me to-...h-hey, stop shaking me!""I'm gonna repeat myself, and thi
"Woah!" I exclaimed in alarm, as I narrowly ducked under the horizontal swing of Iris's wooden sword, before letting myself fall back and swinging my feet up as my palms landed on the floor. Iris swiftly tilted her body back to avoid my heels crashing onto her face, before I used the momentum to backflip, springing back a few paces as I landed, getting some distance. I grimaced as she immediately shot towards me, driving the wooden sword straight at my face as she closed in on me rapidly. I quickly tilted my head across to evade it, the wooden blade grazing my left cheek and nicking the side of my ear, before I drove my right fist towards her. As my fist closed in on her chest, she swiftly took one hand off the handle of the wooden sword and grabbed my forearm, stopping my punch before flicking her other wrist and whipping the wooden sword down as I began to drive my knee up towards her waist. I let out a hiss of pain as she struck my ankle with the wooden sword, slowing down my kn
