006 - A Bad Memory

Unlike before, her face looks a bit calm knowing that Alex is still doing the same thing, examining the document without taking any note.

A few moments later, Alice comes in by bringing a pot of coffee and one empty cup. She puts the cup on the table near Alex, and offers him the coffee.

Due to being at his peak concentration, Alex doesn’t respond to her. That’s when Alice deliberately spills the coffee while pouring it into the cup.

It startles Alex, and he immediately takes the document away. However, one side of the document has been wet by the coffee. Not to mention that Alice made the coffee so thick and hot, making most texts and numbers on the left side of that document so hard to examine.

“Aah, I’m sorry! I, I…”

Oddly, Alex doesn’t seem too bothered by it.

“It’s okay. I’ve finished with everything on that part. You don’t need to worry about that.”

“But…”

Alex just smiles peacefully, and then separates the other documents from the financial report from 7 years ago which has been so wet.

Alicia feels so guilty. She still doesn’t understand why she has to do that. In that semi-panic state, she just goes outside and then comes back with a rag to clean the coffee spill from the table.

“That’s enough!” says Alex as he takes the rag, intending to clean the table himself.  “Please, just take this one document away. Let me clean the rest.”

Alice receives that financial report from 7 years ago with a blank face. Not just her, but it also makes Julia so confused. Alex hasn’t been there that long, yet he no longer needs that one stack of financial reports.

“Are you sure you don’t need it anymore? I’m truly sorry! If you want, I could just prepare another copy of this report for you,” offers Alice.

“No, it’s okay! I’ve memorized them all,” replies Alex.

“Memorize them all?” mumbles Alicia with a disbelieving face.

“Well, I have a photographic memory. So…”

“A photographic memory? Is that even real? You mean, you can just record things simply by seeing it like a camera capturing a picture?” asks Alice.

“It’s not that simple! I still need some focus to examine in detail. Not simply seeing it and then capturing the image like a camera. So, could you please let me continue my job?”

Alice just nods a few times with her stupid look as she takes her leave.

On the other hand, that middle-age lady Julia Henderson only puts on a silly expression. She shakes her head leaving that room, believing that Alex was just bluffing with his fantasy.

Not long after she gets back to her office, the phone on the desk rings.

“Yes?”

[I heard our Mr. President hired someone to examine the financial report]

Immediately, Julia’s face turns a bit paler as soon as she realizes with whom she is talking.

She knows this is not something she can just take lightly. She turns left and right while holding the phone, with the man still talking to her.

She nods here and there with a terrified face like she is dealing with the devil who is coming to her asking for retribution.

“Aa, Sir! You, you don’t need to worry about it. It’s just a man without any formal education with so much fantasy in his head.”

[What’s this? Aren’t you a professional?]

“Um, you see! Ev, even the people from the tax office did not find any discrepancies in our financial report. So you don’t need to worry about this.”

[We can’t take this thing lightly. Go check his background. A man like Harry Gaines couldn't just hire someone recklessly. Nowadays, formal education is not everything in this world. If it’s true he is just a person without formal educational background, he must have something special for Harry to hire him]

Julia keeps nodding without finding any excuse to refute. Soon after that call ends, she immediately leaves her office heading to the elevator. The only one he can ask about Alex's background is Harry's son, Nelson.

And so…

“What? You really don’t know who that man is?” replies Nelson with a bit of unexpected reaction.

“Is he that famous?”

“I don’t know if he is that famous. But, from what I learned, he was a CEO for Vintage Vega for the past 10 years. I thought you would have known him considering you’ve been in the business for years.”

Julia is petrified as soon as he learns about Alex’s identity. She just leaves Nelson’s office without giving any further questions.

Well, the thing that makes it special is not about Alex was once a CEO. But because most people in the business know what had happened to Vintage Vega, Inc. in the past.

So many people speculated that the company would collapse after losing the old man Rodolfo Vega. Because he didn’t have anyone as an apprentice to continue the legacy.

But in reality, that company actually grew rapidly with the new CEO. In fact, the development was so huge that it surpassed the legacy Rodolfo Vega left.

Some said it was just luck due to some circumstance. But most people can’t ignore the influence of the new CEO.

However, only now she meets in person with that so-called “The Pupil” which has become a hot topic for a while in recent years. And currently, that man, the myth, is trying to find the error in the financial report under her management.

“No way! Did he say the truth? That photographic memory guy?”

She gets back to her office, taking a seat and then starts thinking hard to find another solution. She keeps biting her forefinger nail, as she mumbles to herself.

For whatever reason, it’s like she has the need to make it hard for Alex to investigate any oddity in Harry’s company.

“I need to find a way to disturb him? But what?”

She leaves her office, and then secretly takes a peek at the meeting room. There she finds Alex is just having a rest by leaning his back and tilting his head up with his face covered with a hanky.

“Oh, getting tired already?” she mumbles.

However, after an hour later, when she tries to check on Alex again, she still finds Alex in the same situation.

A few minutes before the lunch break, Alex leaves that meeting room by taking all those financial reports. Julia notices him, and immediately leaves her office again to halts Alex.

“Where are you taking all those documents? If you are going to have a lunch break, you can’t take them out with you!”

“No, I only want to give them back,” replies Alex as he immediately hands over all of those documents to her. “I’m going back home,” he says as he takes his leave.

Julia immediately puts all the documents on the table of a nearby employee, because she has a little trouble holding them all.

“Tyler, can you bring these documents to my office!”

She talks to that one employee without taking her attention away from Alex. She just stares at Alex with a wrinkled face, looking so confused with everything.

She begins to speculate that Alex might have found nothing in those financial reports which makes her a bit relieved.

In fact, Alex has finished examining all those documents. But he finds it hard to concentrate on analyzing all the data in his head.

It’s one of his issues by having a strong memory. When he loses his composure, some bad memories from the past often overlap in his head. He can't erase the nighmare when he was hunted down by some assassins as a kid, which led him to a near death experience being alone in a small boat, lost in the middle of the sea for days.

Such a traumatic past when he had to survive left a strong impact in him. And with his strong memory, this makes it hard for him to concentrate on one task on some ocassions. Even after he reaches the bottom floor of that building, he still rubbing his forehead trying to ease his mind.

Not just that, the photo of the mysterious woman who sparked his divorce from Sofia also keeps haunting him. Likewise with his longing to meet his daughter.
