The afternoon sun had climbed high, and Lucian found himself glancing at his wristwatch for what felt like the hundredth time. It was past the usual hour for picking Amber up from school, yet he was still waiting for her call—a call she always made to let him know she was done for the day.

He waited, but the call never came, which struck him as odd.

“Maybe she wants me to just go to her…” he thought, forcing a small smile. “She probably thinks our relationship has gone to the point where I should know to pick her up from school without needing a call. She’s… certainly grown accustomed to me being her personal chauffeur.”

Sighing, he stood up, deciding it was best to head over to the school himself. The last thing he wanted was to let his little sister down.

Pulling up at the school, Lucian stepped out of the car and scanned the area for Amber. Instead, he spotted her friend, Liz, rushing toward him.
