Next Step

What’s worse than a man who has lost everything? I have failed in life”, Brandon laments. “Without money no one would call you, No one would check up on you, NO one would support you, No one would love you”. Those were Brandon’s father’s last words to him before he left.

“The call last night was from Arturo, my father’s right hand and most trusted man. I had no choice than to accept his offer, I would call my father!” Brandon said as he made up his mind.

“Brandon wade Ramirez!” the voice said from the phone. It was Brandon's father. “Father!” Brandon managed to say after several minutes. “Yes young man, it's your father” the man replied. Tears rolled down Brandon’s cheeks. “You were right father, Everything you said was true!” Brandon said.

“I regret going against your words, father”, Brandon added.

“This is sudden and unexpected! When Arturo told me he found you I had doubts”, Brandon’s father said in a calm and cold voice.

“I want to know what happened. Why did you decide to come back after all this while? I have always been wrong. Why am I suddenly right?” he added.

Brandon wept harder, his father could hear him sobbing silently over the phone. “Without money”, Brandon said, still in tears. “NO one would value you!” his father completed the statement for him.

“I have always wished for a family. I loved Alianna and my son, father”, Brandon said, “Money was never a drive for me, I never wanted to be like you! father”, Brandon added.

“What did you get from going against my words?” his father asked. Brandon was silent.

“I can answer that for you my son, YOU get nothing!. Absolutely Nothing”, his father thundered on the phone.

“With money you will find love, and with power you will get everything you want” his father added.

“I believe you now, father. Experience has been my teacher”, Brandon said. “Now clean up. You're a man, I raised no weakling”, his father said.

“It hurts so much father, I sacrificed everything for my family”, Brandon said, still depressed.

“Regardless of your sacrifice, if it isn’t for money it's useless, no one will remember until they need you for more, baseless sacrifices”, His father said.

“What happened between I and your mother is different. Humans, women, everything revolves around Money Brandon!” His father roared.

Brandon stood up from the floor where he sat dejected. He took their family picture. He, Alianna and Junior.; They were all in smiles. “What went wrong? We used to be happy” he said, touching the picture with his hands slowly and in pain.

He smashed the picture angrily on the floor. The glasses that framed the picture sprang up, cutting him in the eyebrow.

“That’s great, let it all go!” His father said, who was still on the call. “People will discard you when you aren’t useful to them. Not only should you have money, but you must stay relevant”, his father added.

“I was busy with money, not because I never loved you or your mother, but to stay up there in power”, his father said.

“I have always resented you father!” Brandon said, wiping off the little blood from the cut on his brow. He bent down to pick up the broken glass on the floor.

“I always knew you resented me, but I was sure you would come back to your senses. The only thing was, I never expected it to be this soon”, his father said.

“Ouch!” Brandon exclaimed. One of the glasses cut him. His hands were bleeding too.

“I guess the glass cut you?” His father asked. “When you become blinded by poverty, you start doing things you’re not meant to do and you will definitely get hurt,” his father said.

Brandon left the phone in the sitting room. He went to the bathroom. “Today everything ends!” he said, turning up the shower.

Brandon removed his clothes, he realised he was still putting on the clothes he wore to work, he wasn’t welcome, hadn’t eaten. “They left just like that” he said, smashing the bleeding hand on the wall mistakenly. He let out a great shout.

“I don’t even feel the pain from the cut. The pain is from my heart. Why does it hurt so much”, Brandon said, sobbing.

He closed his eyes, “I keep seeing her. We bath together at times. She caresses my body and tells me she loves it.”

“But it was never enough. She wanted more” he said to himself.

“You spent an hour in the bathroom”, his father said. “Yes father, Mourning for the last time.”

Brandon said dressing up. He had a towel rounded up to his lower body part. He said, as he stood in front of the mirror examining himself.

“Get ready Brandon!” his father said, and got off the phone.
